I am so so sorry that this is what your illness has done to you but even by commenting, you are leaving a footprint. Death is such a frightening thing and I don't understand how it feels to be so unwell but all I can say to you is that, stay yourself until the end and keep fighting. You have so much more living to do! You owe it to yourself to live until there is no more living you can do. I wish you the best. XXX

When I was younger I was misdiagnosed with a terminal illness. I had my entire funeral planned out, my last words (they are: "My life really was worth living" i know stupid but i was young) everything. And then one day I found out that I wasn't going to die. At least not from that illness. In a way, I wished I could go back to dying in a certain amount of years. I had everything planned out and the thought of my entire life changing was absolutely terrifying. Now I live everyday to its fullest (chessy but true). I no longer have this timer ticking down over my head, and I am so grateful for this second chance.

I have panic attacks when I seriously think about death and how everything I am, see and do today are going to be turned into nothing at all. I've tried to accept it but just realising it gets me to the point where I'm going to faint.

Im the exact same way. Ive had so many panic attacks thinking about death, and I honestly don't know how to cope with it.
@melfromhell
@melfromhell 8 лет назад
same. it completely paralyses me. the shitty thing is that i was never particularly religious or spiritual, and even though i don't reject any possibilities, i just can't bring myself to think that there's something else for us after this. I'd very much like to believe that we don't just become nothing again, but no matter what we believe there is only one truth and there's only one way to find it out...
@lc4152
@lc4152 8 лет назад
thiswarispointless same! The fact that I'm not religious makes it even worse, since I don't believe in an 'after'
@violettemartin6368
@violettemartin6368 7 лет назад
Hey! I also used to get very anxious about death, to the point where thinking about how everything will eventually end made me bawl my eyes out. I had a terrible phase during a few months where I could not think of anything else and it ruined everything (I remember looking at my friends during New Year's Eve and thinking : "we're all going to die and this means absolutely nothing" and it ruined all my fun for the rest of the evening). Same as you, I'm not religious so I don't believe anything will happen after you die--you just cease to exist. Well actually, and that's what made me feel better: "you" don't cease to exist. Your consciousness does, but everything else (your physical body) is still a part of this world and always will be. Like scientist say, "nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed". I don't believe in reincarnation, at all, but you are still a part of the universe and forever will be. I don't know if it makes you feel better about it but it helped me lots to come to term with death, to know that "I" will still be a part of this world and that it's not actually the end--and that there won't ever be an end to that part of me. I think what made me most anxious, and I don't know if it's the same for you, is thinking that all of me and everything that I am will disappear--but it won't! I will still be here. Just like a patient that is brain-dead you know? They're still a part of this world.
@melfromhell
@melfromhell 7 лет назад
+Violette Martin were i in one of *those* phases now, I'd go straight into a panic attack reading your comment😂 i don't really believe in reincarnation either, but the basic scientific principle of no energy being destroyed or created kind of troubles me... idk if what I'm going to say will make sense. if you can't create something from nothing, and if something can't be turned to nothing as well, is it possible that "we" have existed before as some other consciousness, whether that means as a human or as something else? i mean, if we are merely matter, our "I" is contained within the bounds of our body. who is to say that we won't experience the world again, but as another "I", a completely different consciousness created by a completely different physical body? maybe our "selves" aren't really our "own"... damn, i nearly sent myself into a panic attack by typing this. i hope i didn't sound like a drunk or high person haha

Me and my best friend (who also had CF) would constantly joke and fuck with each other. On the day of her death, she touched my shoulder and smiled and said "tag, you're it" seconds before she died. I miss her so much, but her last words still make me smile to this day. She was such a smart ass and she knew it would bother me forever that I am still "it". I loved her so much and she made sure her last moments were light hearted so it wouldn't be so tough for me

My funeral plan is to have a closed casket and my body to not be in it but be in the ceiling on a trap door. And let the body hit the floor starts playing and all when it gets to "let the bodies hit the FLOOOORRR" the trap door open and my body just falls.

I was diagnosed with a brain tumor 2.5 years ago when i was 13 i thought i was gona die as the doctors explained it so badly and they dident really know. I came to terms with the fact i was gona die it took 1 month before the shock went away (i dident cry or eat much in a month) well 6 monthes later i got snt to an expert in CT scans and my tumor hadent grown i was pissed as i came to terms with my possible death (its weird i know). Under those 6 monthes i was really happy to do stuff with my family before that experiance i was basicly like any other kid took everything for granted complained about not getting what i wanted but now even if i dont get anything for say like my birthday im still gona be happy as i know i have a new day tomorrow that i havent explored or experianced, Thank you very much for reading. about 7 or 8 years ago I went through a similar situation. I had accepted my fate, for being an ass to all of my real friends and enjoying my youthfulness as a Jock who did as he wanted. but through that brokenness I put my trust in him. when I woke up from brain surgery and knew that I was saved. I raised my hands and I felt a river of Joy and peace for the very first time in my life. it was as if he filled in something that was missing. I was given life by the one who gave it up by me.

+Paintball Fan200 same thing here. after brain surgery ive had an over build up of spinal fluid in my brain. so doctors had to surgically put a shunt, from the skull to the stomach, all under my skin. but my doctors have said that I dont need it no more, and that it has stopped working, so now they're trying to remove it and I refuse, because surgery traumatized me. ill be praying for you, for miracle to happen. God bless you.

I live with a chronic, degenerative, and progressive illness, that will someday be terminal. I know I'm a ticking time bomb to be honest, as I've already faced nearly dying and being revived many, many times. I've even had the classic "bright white light" experience, where I basically had one foot on earth and one foot in heaven (this experience in-particular was in the hospital on the eve of my 19th birthday). Most people with my illness, to the degree that it affects me, never make it past their teen years. I have seen so many of my friends pass away through the years. I just turned 23 a month ago, which is a miracle to say the least. Nearly all of my organs and body systems are shutting down, some have already lost all function. It's just a matter of time. I don't fear death at all, and I never really have. As a Christian (just my personal beliefs) it brings me great comfort to know that I'm going somewhere better than I could ever imagine. I don't fear death, but what I DO fear is who I'll be leaving behind. Mainly, my mom. She has been my full time caregiver since birth. She's my best friend, and I'm her's. She has always been right by my side every step of the way. She is still "married" to my father, but in all honesty that's a different kind of ticking time bomb, as I'm fairly certain that neither of them would want to stay married once I'm gone. Then when you add in the factor that I'm an only child, and that I'm my mom's entire world, the thought of leaving her here all alone just breaks my heart. For the majority of parents who lose a child, they at least still have one other child who is alive, or a spouse to lean on (however I know losing a child is never easy). Death itself I'm fine with, I embrace it, and it brings me no fear. My only fear is for my mom, and I don't know how not to worry about her. She says she'll be okay, but I know that deep down, even she doesn't believe those words. I just wish there was a way to guarantee her a peaceful and happy life. After everything she has done for me, she only deserves the best.

As a Christian, feat not, the Lord will comfort and be with you though the "valley of the shadow of death". Psalm 23. This brings me comfort and I pray you also. I almost died after brain surgery in 2012 but this kept going through my mind when I was in a coma. The lord helped me through that time.

Swim with the... eels? My friend planned her own funeral and I'm glad she did. She wasn't a solemn person, so a solemn funeral with some priest reading the bible or whatever would have not felt like "her". Instead, we all gathered at a hall, watched slide shows, told stories, played games with the many children there, and consumed more candy than I care to disclose. It felt like her.

I'm not afraid of the after, cause it's the absolete nothingness. Like, when before you were born, you aren't concious anymore, you don't exist. It's like when you fall asleep, you don't even realize you are alive at that time. I'm more worried about the people who are left behind, the people who love me. Those are who are gonna suffer, not a dead person.

Dying doesn't scare me, it's the possibility of what happens after death that I find mind numbingly terrifying. Is there a heaven and hell? What if I don't go to heaven? Do we reincarnate? Are we aware we reincarnate between lives? Or is there absolute nothingness? The thought of nothingness I think scares me the most. Just ceasing to exist even in thought or consciousness. If nothing happens after we die than it makes all of our life goals on earth seem kind of pointless.
@ddramos7997
@ddramos7997 7 лет назад
The thing is...if there is nothing, you won't even realize it. It's like when you're asleep. Do you know that you're asleep? Do you feel anything? I know I don't. I don't even dream, for that matter. So if there's nothing...I think it will be just like that.
@ddramos7997
@ddramos7997 7 лет назад
And as far as our life goals being pointless...I disagree. I think it's quite the opposite. If you consider that there may be nothing after this life, then it makes this life...being here and accomplishing all the good you can while you're here...even more critical. Sometimes people who think of heaven as the end-all be-all of existence live their lives in the future and miss the importance of actually living in the now and enjoying every moment...basically being here while they're here.
@TheCorruptedGhost
@TheCorruptedGhost 7 лет назад
Personally, I think death is everything before you were born. So, yes, nothingness. It terrifies me too, and makes life seem pointless, but hey, that doesn't mean you shouldn't have one! Is the way I see it. Our lifespan is a spec of dust in space and time. There's a good chance we probably won't leave a footprint like Einstein or whatever. Just live your life, there's nothing to fear. Everyone's time will come eventually. Just be safe in things that you do, but don't be afraid to try something new. I will literally cry sometimes thinking I wasn't born in the era where people will visit other planets. That makes me sad, but, oh well! At least when I'm dead, I won't know it. I won't have any more cares or worries. I'd want everyone who knew me not to be sad, because... I won't be! lol. It's okay to think about it sometimes, but just tell yourself, you're not alone. Everyone who was born will die. But that could be 80 years from now. People who live to be 120 probably never expected to live that long. Just treat yourself right, and always be happy. (Don't worry what others think, they'll die some day; what you wore or did won't matter to anyone, literally!)
@charleenfabe4672

that is how i feel too! like how will you know you're dead? does everything just go black? so what's the point of life? were we here before this? do we live the same life over? so many questions that can never really be answered. i was so scared the first time i went under for an oral surgery. it was only a couple years ago and i remember asking my husband "what if i don't wake up?". then i did wake up but didn't know i had been "asleep". no dreams to remember, just nothing. that's scary to me.

You are so inspirational... A lot of people hate the idea of their death and they fear it, and its just so amazing to hear that you know, someone is not genuinely afraid, because they know its gonna happen one day and it cannot be stopped. For some reason I was just brought to tears by how cool and laid back you are about this and the idea... You are so beautiful and strong and aha honestly I'm jealous of how brave you are.. Keep up this amazing thing that you have going on here, honestly we need people to think more like you, and already (this is the first video of yours I've watched), you have spread this across me, and put it in my mind that, for now, everything is going to be fine, and it should always be okay. Thank you for putting this message into my mind.... You are so amazing.

I deal with death for a living, mainly suicides. My work has opened my eyes dramatically. We all will die, some of us suddenly, others will have time to prepare. After my first day at my job, I went straight home and sat down with my husband, we had a detailed talk about what we want after we die, if we're on life support, etc. I actually felt much better after. I know death isn't a happy subject, but it's a real subject, and it tends to get swept under a rug. Even after a death, people do everything they can to avoid bringing it up. All this lack of open communication is why people are so afraid of death.

He received a lung transplant 25 years ago and still is going strong. He has made me realize that life is nothing to take for granted . I lost my best friend to suicide 2 years ago and it changed my life forever. Ever since I have blamed myself for not doing more. I've also since then have thought about death so much more. I'm a very intellectual person but I hadn't thought about death itself and being terrified of it until I lost him. It scares me. I know everyone dies eventually but I had PTSD and very bad anxiety even before I lost my best friend. Now I'm on medicine and slowly getting better but I feel as though the world is going on around me and I'm not really here. Depression is a terrible thing. I don't have a religion because I went to church when I was young and later found out they were a cult I've been traumatized since. So I don't have a religion. I also am the type of person to need proof I love science. I just love love ya know? I love to care and love others. I believe I can do amazing things in the world. I miss my best friend and sometimes when I feel suicidal I just want to end it and be with him. But where is he? I'll never know until I die I guess. Thanks for listening to my rant.

I'm currently in a psychiatry (since the beginning of August) to get my depression treated, so I had very much time to philosophically think about death and other things; about our/ my reason of living and much more. Thinking about existential topics used to deepen my depressed mood and keep me awake for hours and hours but in the long run it kind of helped me to cope with that. Now I'm on medication which actually helps me quite well in combination with the therapy.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your dear friend, and also the discovery of being held in a cult. I've had lots of experiences with different churches, beliefs etc. I DO know that the bible says in Romans that "whomever asks him in he will come in to your heart " and john 3:16 says whomever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life"! I know this world can be hard to figure out. But I assure you god knows exactly who you are jerimariah 29:11. It is not chance you're here. I wonder if her optimistic behaviour and joyful vibe comes from being told that she only has 5 years to live. (She said in a video that since the day she was born she's been told countless of times that she only has 5 years to live) because of this she probably tries to live life to the fullest as much as possible with joy and positive thinking, because you know, life's too short to waste a thought on negative thinking and sadness. (Or either that, she's just naturally like this.) she is very inspiring. :)

I've never been diagnosed with terminal illness but since I was very young I've been very close to many people that have and have since passed. Seeing someone die when I was a kid scared me so much. It made me paralyzingly terrified of death in every form. If I thought about it I'd panic. I have to have surgery soon and anesthesia scares me more than anything. But this video has put death in a whole new light for me and I think it might just help change the way I perceive death. I want to thank you Claire, for giving yourself to the world in a way that is helping so many different kinds of people in so many different ways.

What makes you so wise is that you don't view death as this "far off thing that may or may not happen," like you said, it's happening, and you're acceptance of it is something we could all learn from. You're simply aware of what is reality, and although it sounds depressing, the fact that we're going to die should not hinder our enjoyment of life here - today, right now. Thank you for sharing your message!

I have a degree in history, and my primary focus is on the history of cemeteries. In particular, I find the Victorian era to be interesting, as they had such fanfare around burial practices. I have a lot of respect for you and how you approach the subject. As you say, many people are afraid to talk about it. I believe being more open is the key to, perhaps not normalizing it, but make us more comfortable. Cheers to you, Claire!
