Question and Answer Series for May
"how useful is dynamic effort/speed work for gaining strength and size? I realize it is crucial for powerlifters but would it have any relevance in a bodybuilding program? if so, how would you include dynamic effort work into your schedule"

I think that the biggest reason why DE works in because you get more overall reps in given time period which produces more efficient lift because you develop lift patterns better.

you should cover how the range of motion of a short guy affects major lifts compared to a taller person

Maybe, If you don't change the diet at all, same training program, hormons levels. What i was saying is humans are more complicated than a machine than generates a force so speed is just a little factor in adding force to your performance, diet/frequency/ hormones/ sleep/ mood/ supplements can significantly change how much power we have, small factors like speed will definitely increase endurance which will increase force a little but not in an equation like this.

A big chunk of "training systems" out on the net were meant to target athletes with a high work load capacity. Doesn't really matter if you're "enhanced" or not. The programs can almost always be "tweaked" to ensure proper recovery.

I think you can't apply physics equations to complex things like human beings, you can apply it to the bar (mass) and its velocity but you cant really measure "Force" by that equation and apply it to human benching force for example.

So what do you think about the speed work on layne norton's PHAT program? If you don't believe in it then what would you replace it with?

Yes you can. Ask every physicist/engineer on that matter...

Thank you, i really enjoyed this. I was wondering then what is the most effective way to build strength? reps? sets? and doing progressive set? and trying to hit a PR's every time? Thanks

This. Also, what kind of frequency would this work out for and how would one incorporate it? ie if someone wants to get their bench up, having a heavy session of 3-5 sets of 3-5 reps, followed by 10 sets of speed reps later on in the week?

If i do 1 rep at 85% for my speedwork, how many sets would you say is good? Like 10-12 sets? Great video as always.

Why does Layne Norton include speed work in his PHAT routine?

is there a relevant relationship between "speed work" and work involving "accommodating resistance" in regard to the critiques mentioned?

mark bell has said in a video that most guys don't lift heavy enough to worry about dynamic effort work. take a guy who bench 300 lbs 50 % of that is 150 lbs for lets say for bench day. what the hell is he gonna move fast LOL. this is used for experienced lifters and when they get to a point that it is needed to break plateaus.

So something like 8x1 at 80% 1rm with 45 seconds rest is appropriate?

I didnt say the calculations made would be extremely accurate. But then again they dont have to to be a useful tool.

bottom line - to quote Louie Simmons: "you can't move heavy weight slowly." So I think you missed the point of speed work when applied to powerlifting
@jonitalia6748
@jonitalia6748 9 лет назад
jonpaulevans Moving light weight quickly for more reps is just hypertrophy work. No big deal.
@Fizyxx
@Fizyxx 9 лет назад
sure. But technically speaking, I don't think rep speed is a big factor. slow reps for high reps can still be hypertrophy, right?
@jonitalia6748
@jonitalia6748 9 лет назад
I agree, rep speed is no big deal. That's why Westside is overrated. Yeah tut and hitting over threshold is key.
