Printers back then: - Install it just by copying some .inf files - Done. - Noisy and temperamental as h*ll - Huge serial cables behind the CPU - You could use even house paint, even liquid paper as ink - Printed everything even underwater - So much dust, flies and ants, but they kept working fine. - You could drop them on the floor and smash it. Just fine. Printers nowadays: - Install it (online only) by filling out obnoxious forms and giving all your personal data - Noisy and temperamental as h*ll - They can be by the side of the router - they get a bad connection - Refurbished cartridges or compatible hardware won't work anymore - Buy only original cartridges and it still complains they're not - Press a button or move the printer an inch while printing: blurred print - "There's a particle of dust inside me. I'm broken forever" I had a 2000s Epson Stylus Color 480 that still works. Bought an HP recently and it's already broken.

Quote: "We were selling multi-color ink cartridges for $59.95 and the [listed] cost of manufacturing? $0.23 !" A lot of people like me get a wireless printer to share with multiple devices and family. Most people are not going to use a network firewall against their WiFi printer. Although I haven't had problems with my Brother printer, they may be temped to follow in HP's footsteps - just like Apple removing headphone jacks from their phones. Even if you only connect your printer with USB, it is possible for your PC with HP's official drivers to make a firmware update over USB if they wanted. If you just use generic drivers, you may not be able to adjust DPI, use ink-saving mode, etc. If you never update your HP printer drivers, there may be an actual security risk at doing so (especially for businesses). While some businesses might be able to firewall all of their printers on the network, most consumers are not going to do that.

I was going to comment something akin to this, the issue now is that pretty much all manufacturers run this model and no-one is going to increase the upfront cost of their printer, the only way is to have some kind of industry roundtable and intervention from a regulator to come up with a plan out of this bullshit model and ensure it isn't returned to, not sure that is going to happen though... also, if someone could design a fully open source product, that would also work.

I get it for the scenario with "buy ink and get the printer for free" that they want to get the money back by selling the ink. But this is no topic with a 400 $ printer that cost 150 $ to produce. On the other side, why cut down on the profit. Like Louis said in the end, who will buy a 400$ printer, when he can get one for 100...even when that 400$ printer will say "no drm, will fit any cartridge,even refillable tanks" , who will sell more...the 100$ one with drm and people ending up paying 50 for the ink

@scott4825
@scott4825 Год назад
There are refillable tank ink and higher volume ink printers. When buying a typical printer, you need to first look at aftermarket ink options for it and see how much they run because in reality what you are buying is ink, and they are typically giving the printer away. Most HPs are sub $100. The problem is that so much gets tossed into the landfill as a result.
@alleriodrone
@alleriodrone Год назад
The refillable tanks are cool but when setting them and forgetting them they break badly. I have a friend who owns a repair and selling business (2-way radios) that only prints out like 20 pages a month but has 3 printers so they are always in a convenient place... They are great until the ink dries up or an update completely bricks the printer. Unfortunately both these situations happened. I suggested buying a black and white toner printer instead but he wanted color so he might be back on HP by now. Before that he was using printers from the late 90s but it is getting hard to find the ink and almost impossible to get the driver's working on a modern windows install.
@scott4825
@scott4825 Год назад
@@alleriodrone Ideally he uses one color printer for all prints, and then does a few extra prints occasionally to keep the printheads clean. Most jet ink printers brick themselves if they aren't used pretty regularly. Right now I"m really happy with the Brother Inkvestment MFC-J995DW I have. They have cartridges that hold a LOT of ink, and the Amazon aftermarket ones work pretty well @25 for a set once you get it figured out (the printer doesn't show ink level with them, but it still prints). Another thing he could do is buy one with a 3 year Amazon warranty. :) But it generally is a horrible cat and mouse game with printers, especially if you have any of their software/drivers updating. My workhorse is a 5 yr old Brother laser printer that was sub $100, and has probably gone through 40,000 pages. The toner off Amazon typically is around $10 for it.

Ink is just a waste for home users. You don't use it for a week, and it's trash/a pain in the ass to get running again. Most people print something when a company or the government is a dick to them and demands something in paper form, aside from that maybe when there's some legal trouble, but aside from that pretty much anything can be done digitally or you go to a copy shop. And for those rare occasions you really need to print something yourself, an affordable laser printer will suffice. Once we had this customer that after contacting us about an issue with the printer , he brought it to us for a repair. We could not repair the said printer and we replaced within warranty with a slightly newer model. Thing is this customer used to purchase Toner with 12 € and do on average 9000-12000 pages per "illegal" toner. But the new one at that moment of time , did not have a wide spread "illegal" toner in the market ,so the customer asked us. So i will have to pay 60 € per 5000 pages of print? When we said yes, he literally brought back the new printer and requested the old broken back to get it repaired somewhere else 🤣

The process is foolproof as far as not spilling ink when you do this. They give you a lot of ink too...not a starter amount. The price for a set of ink bottles is already less than cartridges despite holding a lot more ink. I had a really good Epson photo printer about 15 years ago. Never used reman or 3rd party cartridges. After 3-4 months I changed my first ink & got an error warning that I can’t use non-genuine cartridges & refused to print. After fiddling a bit I got it to work, but It happened again & again whenever I would turn it on. I had a bunch of spare cartridges already (photographer) and these didn’t work either. Maybe they were fake I thought, so I ordered some direct from Epson - and even these were ‘non-genuine’ so I wasn’t allowed to print. This was supposed to be higher quality expensive ink, only sold in packs of 6, so by the time I gave up I must have spent more on wasted ink cartridges than I had on the printer. I never have & never will buy an Epson product again. Companies like this don’t deserve business from anybody 😡

This really shouldn't be allowed by law. There is a part of anti monopoly law that says you cannot tie 2 separate products together. Such as requiring you only buy socks from the same company that made your shoes. It's known as tying the sale of two products. The government should be enforcing this law against HP and all other printer companies that do this.

When I evaluate printers, I calculate cost per (printed) page using OEM ink. That way, I don't get hosed.

This is so true. I really have shifted my buying habits to what you’re talking about. Amazon is so full of crap today that I really don’t care about the price as much anymore. Even reviews - I know those are all BS too. I’m looking for the company that seems to be the most honest, helpful, etc. So even if something costs a little more, I feel better buying it. I’m so sick of junk.

Really ridiculous that a printer needs to be connected to the internet at all.
