Thank you. I am completely new to this technology. This has to be the best video I have seen about this subject. My work has altered and I find myself getting more and more audio commissions for stories. I need to find something that will suit my needs. Currently using a condensor and i am at home. My audio files keep getting rejected to do over because of some noise interference on the file. I do not have a home studio. Yep...looks like I am gonna have to invest in a dynamic microphone. You have answered my dilemma clearly.

The proximity effect happens for dynamic and condenser microphones due to their polar patterns, not do to their microphone type. I agree with your other points and always recommend dynamic microphones for streaming/gaming/podcasting.

Great video mate - but to ad on, I think if you are a home musician a dynamic mic could be the better choice too, because it picks up less reverb and room noise. Like the Se V7 is imo in the 100 money range a great sounding mic and can get you some pretty good and clean vocals in a horrible room

This was a really cool video, but I do have a question. Is there a good USB dynamic mic that you would recommend? I think the PodMic you suggested sounds great, but with the added cost of getting an interface for it to plug into, it would be helpful to get some suggestions. I don't know too much about mics & there was a lot of great info in this video. Great job! :)

I have these exact same mics. I used the AT2020 for recording several people in a room (more often) and now have started to use the PodMic for podcast style recordings. The AT2020 is very good at picking up all sounds without getting clipped. I have recently moved more to using the Rode PodMic... One problem: in Audacity the PodMic works perfectly, meanwhile in OBS the recording is very very low, and I need to crank up the gain. When I crank up the gain, it starts to pick up my breathing and typing and literally everything in the room, very different from how yours seems to work... Any ideas?

Own both USB and XLR for audiotechnica mic. Love both. Just FYI if you use a cheap cable you might get interference and get like a buzzing noise. Took me a hot minute to figure out. Keep an eye out at pawnshops I got a blue yeti for like 15$, at2020 XLR for 30$, and a blue snowball for 10$. Its cheap enough that even if they didn't work I would be alright because it was so cheap. Going to try a dynamic mic. Thanks

Just a quick advice from me who's a broadcast engineer who works in radio and tv station to anyone who wants to buy a mic for streaming or making music and songs, get a dynamic microphone rather than condenser specially if you have an open space with lots of noises going on and specially if your PC is next to your mic I get amazed when people recommend condenser mics for streamers. you use condenser mics if you're doing a podcasting with just one mic available, like put it in the middle of the table for example and chat with the person in front of you, and it must be a closed area with no outside noises, no AC noises, no fan noises, not even a pc with watercooling noises.. and if you get close to it and talk like you do with dynamic mics you will hear your breath even if you put filters on it .. and when you want to remove it by using EQs you will cut some of frequencies and lose so many sound that you might need, the quality will be horrible .. for streaming, making music, podcasting alone use dynamic for sure, dynamic has better quality and doesn't catch any background noises such as fans, ACs, birds, even if people chatting in the background but with condenser mic you will catch every single sound most of the streamer i see them buying condenser mics and then use EQ to turn it into dynamic.. just why?! lol

I'm considering streaming and I own a MXL 770. I'll get a dynamic microphone when I can afford a replacement, but do you have any tips on getting the best quality with a condenser microphone until then? My setup will be in a decent size closet and I'm able to install some budget soundproofing if that helps. Thanks.

Im very confused when it comes to setting up for podcasting. I am looking at the Rode podast mic, NT1 and the At2040/At2020. I want a Mic that can connect straight to my Sony Zv1 camera for podcasting. I understand you need a USB mic for this. If I need too, how do I use a Audio Interface/phantom power when the only equipment I have is the Sony Zv1 and a Mic. Do audio interfaces only connect to the computer or can I connect it straight to the camera? Cheers.

@reconnaisance

I bought a Rode NT-Mini condenser microphone for Zoom meetings and stuff. I'm always annoyed that other participants could hear echoes and other unnecessary noises. I tried listening to it myself and could hear my aircon buzzing. As my room wasn't as "treated" as it could be, my audio was just way too bad. A mic from an Apple earphone was better as it would transmit less noise. If I knew this earlier I would have bought a dynamic mic instead.
@brainwasher3742

Noise rejection depends on the polar pattern, not mic type. Figure 8 and cardioid pattern mics will both exhibit the proximity effect.
@kiiroMADE
@kiiroMADE 5 месяцев назад
Both podmic and at2020 has the cardioid polar pattern, but as you notice in the video the AT2020 is having less of noise rejection even though the AT2020 has a tighter pattern than the podmic.

Appreciate the straightforward information! I am a streamer with a Condenser mic and noticed when I yell it is LOUD. Like, unpleasant. Will the dynamic mic have an elevated volume but not the "High Pitch" of the yell / scream? Thanks Ken
@kiiroMADE
@kiiroMADE 5 месяцев назад
Any microphone will be loud if you yell. What you need to do is to set a limiter in your software at around -6 to -10 dB for your microphone (Your game/other content should be slightly lower than this). So if you yell it might sound ass but the volume will be limited for the viewers so they don't get their ears dismantled. You could also add a compressor filter.
