Land owner discovers box of Dynamite on property; NCSO & SBI Respond to Scene
On Thursday May 18th at approximately 1030hrs, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Everette Strickland, who owns property in the 6800 block of NC 231 South near Middlesex. Mr. Strickland stated that he had discovered a box of dynamite in an old tobacco pack house on his property. The property has been vacant since the early 1980’s, as Mr. Strickland now lives in Raleigh.
NCSO units responded and discovered a box in the pack house with approximately 50 pounds of dynamite in it. The Explosive Ordinance Demolition Unit out of Fort Bragg and the NC State Bureau of Investigation Bomb Squad was notified and both responded to the scene. It was determined that the box of dynamite had begun to crystallize, which causes the dynamite to become unstable. The property did not have any immediate neighbors that were in any danger; therefore no homes were evacuated; however NC 231 was shut down for a few hours due to the fact that the pack house was located very near to the roadway. The Nash Rocky Mount School System was notified of the road closure so that school buses could make alternate routes around the detour at the end of the school day.
The dynamite was safely moved from the pack house to an open field on the back side of the property and was detonated. A video of the detonation is attached to this press release. It is believed that the dynamite has been in the pack house since possibly the 1930’s, as Mr. Strickland states that he remembers his grandfather using the dynamite to blow up tree stumps when he was just a boy.
