In this episode of Mapping It we drive to the Westfjords of Iceland to see Dynjandi waterfall. It’s a long drive from the Snæfellsnes Peninsula but incredibly scenic! Dynjandi is a massive waterfall in the Westfjords and so majestic. It’s 100 meters high and around 60 meters wide. If you only see one thing in the Westfjords of Iceland, make it Dynjandi!

Hi Karin and Jeremy 😊 we really enjoyed your mapping version of Dyjandi waterfall . What month did you visit Iceland for that trip? Thanks Xavier and Cindy

We’re glad you enjoyed it! We visited Iceland in early September and drove the entire ring road in one week. The weather was pretty windy with some rain at times. It was a very long drive to get to Dynjandi but it was so worth it! Thanks for watching!

Dynjandi has been on our Iceland bucket list and unfortunately because of the weather we could never make it. Now that we are going in the summer next year we are definitely going to make the trip in our campervan! Awesome video.

I can see why, it's definitely worthy of being on a bucket list, such a fantastic waterfall in Iceland. Hope you have a blast in Iceland! Glad you liked the video, thanks for watching!

Visiting the falls in a month...How long a walk to the top on the paths? thanks

If you don't stop to take photos, it's probably about a 15 minute walk to the top, with about 100m of elevation gained. It's a pretty easy path up and there are a handful of smaller waterfalls along the way to enjoy. We spent about 2 hours in total but we also ate lunch and took tons of photos while we were there. If you're more efficient with your time, you could probably do it much faster than us. We love Dynjandi, it's one of our favorite falls in Iceland! Have a great time and thanks for watching!

I’m heading to Iceland 🇮🇸 in May for 7 days. Hiring a camper to do the ring road but really want to see Dynandi as it looks amazing. Just trying to work out if it’s worth the time it takes to get there. Decisions Decisions. Great vlog 👍

Dynjandi is such an impressive waterfall but it takes forever to drive to. We spent at least 4.5 hours getting there from the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and about the same amount of time leaving the Westfjords - all in one day. However, we ended up staying over 2 hours, so we felt that it was worth it for us. A pro to going in May is that you have more daylight hours than we had in September, so it means you can stay on the road longer if you need to (we were often waking up at or just before sunrise everyday of our trip just to make the most of the limited daylight in September). The one concern would be if there is still some snow in the area and if you feel comfortable driving on snow. We did the ring road clockwise (and liked it because everything we saw just kept getting better and better), and had a lot of fun exploring Dynjandi. But by the time we got to the south coast, we wished we had an extra day to explore more because there is just so much to see down there. Best of luck planning and thanks for watching!

@@MappingIt thank you for the detailed reply. I’ve been lucky to have visited Iceland 5 times before. One of those trips was doing the ring road and the others were a mix of everything, so I’ve seen many of the main sites especially south coast and Snaefellsness a number of times. This time around I want to visit the harder to reach areas like the West Fjords even if I have to drive a lot. Dynandi, Haifoss and Gylmur waterfalls are top of my list, plus want to visit the Múlagljúfur Canyon this time as have never seen these. Wanted to add I loved your Iceland series and can see you enjoyed your visit. Iceland is such an amazing country with so many amazing places to see and is probably my favourite 🇮🇸❤️

In that case, Dynjandi is definitely worth the drive to get to! There's plenty to see in the Westfjords including a massive red sand beach and the Latrabjarg cliffs that are a popular spot for bird watching. Iceland is such an incredible country, it's easy to see why you've visited 5 times. We're counting the days until we get to go back. Enjoy your trip!

To position ourselves for the next day, we drove from Dynjandi to Hofsos. Due to driving conditions and weather, it was about a 6 hour drive at the time. We certainly wouldn’t recommend this under normal circumstances, but for people who really want to see Dynjandi and have a very tight timeframe, it is possible but requires a lot of driving. Thanks for watching!

is the westfojords considered an froad? need 4x4 to access?

The roads that we took in the Westfjords were not considered F-roads when we drove them. We had an SUV with 4WD and we highly recommend having that if planning to drive through the Westfjords. The roads were mostly unpaved, and some had absolutely terrible potholes. You probably wouldn't want to drive in a sedan/city car. Hope this helps!
