In the first episode of Motorvate's DIY Garage we go to the dyno and find out if a K&N panel air filter makes more power than the stock paper air filter.
With a stock G37, we made two runs on the dyno, then we swapped in the K&N panel air filters and made two more runs.
Same day, same dyno, same operator, same gas, same car. The only difference is the K&N filter...

Finally a person who measures and doesn't believe any tales that float around. Watched five vids about this topic and none of them presented any factual evidence. They all just talk about what they 'think' or 'believe'. Waste of time. Thank you for doing it much better.

Hey Mick, Thank you! Please keep in mind, different cars/engines will get different gains. The VQ37VHR engine in the G37/370 sure seems to respond well to a K&N filter.

Yeah, the gain for my 2.0l NA will be negligible. But the roarrr is worth the price :)

Hey Mick, Ahhhh yes the roar can be delightful!! On my 95 Maxima with a K&N cone filter it was wonderful! With the K&N panel filters, I don't hear anything :(

The K&N worked on my 93 240ZX. The VQ's don't respond well to mods though
@MotorvateDIY
@MotorvateDIY 7 лет назад
Hey Stephen, Hmmm, that has not been my experience. My 95 Maxima (VQ30DE) picked up 14 HP with a y-pipe, 6 HP with a K&N cone and 5HP with a larger b-pipe. My G37 (VQ37VHR) also has done OK. The KA24DE (same as your 240ZX) in my 99 Altima is stock, but maybe I should try a K&N on that. What VQ engine/car didn't respond to mods and what were the mods? I am interested to know more...

I don't understand all the hate this video is getting. do people not realize for spending $100 on 2 filters to gain 14 WHEEL hp is a fucking great deal. In most cases you're going to have to spend 5x-10x that amount on a catback to gain the same amount of hp. The whole idea behind this is just a comparison and I'm glad he posted it too.
@MotorvateDIY
@MotorvateDIY 7 лет назад
Hey sk8punk318, Thanks for your comment. People think I am paid by K&N and have lied about the results. I do like K&N products, however I have only reported the data that I paid to collect (I purchased the filters used and paid for 2 hours of dyno time) I had planned to go back to the dyno for a retest in October/November but my work schedule didn't allow it. Now I am planning on the spring. This follow up test will include a NEW OEM filter, the used K&N and no filter. I think the results will be very interesting.

Buy aftermarket filters once or buy OEM filters multiple times when they're dirty. They can possibly pay for themselves while the car being quicker and better mpg's. I always buy dry filters due to the MAF.

Since the G37 uses two intakes and two filters, switching to K&N probably makes more of a difference than most engines. But damn 14hp just from a filter swap? I'm lucky if I get that out of an expensive cat back exhaust.

What most people don't understand, is that you will get a small boost in hp & torque. But where you really feel the gains is in throttle response! I have noticed in my FX 35's response was 2 times quicker than before I installed my K&N stage 2 CAI system. Improved a couple points in mpg as well. So the moral of the story with cold air intakes, is you get small/minuscule hp, torque & mpg gains, & dramatic throttle response gains! Add a performance mass air sensor, & a $600'ish high flow cat-back exhaust, & you will think you have a different engine under the hood.
@ryanmcfarland1900
@ryanmcfarland1900 6 лет назад
Darksyne that's the opposite of how that works. Two filters means less flow needed per filter...therefore less of a difference.

I have both stock paper and K&N. Why do I have both? Bcz I use K&N and the days where I have to clean/dry/recoat oil/dry, but have to use my car, I would temporarily use paper filter for that day or two and then once my K&N filter is fully dry and ready to go, I will pop my K&N back in and keep my paper filter for nxt cleaning interval. I've cleaned my air filter 4 times, have roughly almost 200k miles. My paper filter is nearly as good as new still even till this day bcz I used it total of 5 days throughout 14 years.

I've maintained my car as optimal as possible. oil changing with quality synthetic oil, decent/good oil filter, flush out transmission fluid along with replacing spin on filter every time, replacing spark plugs to ngk laser iridium, bleeding and flushing brake fluids whenever I replace brake pads, changing cabin filter, flushing out coolant, but now, I bought kn cabin air filter yesterday. K&n ruined my mass air flow sensor. Over time, the oil comes off the filter and up into the air intake, and I did not over oil this thing. Also, I noticed you can see holes through the filter, kind of like looking through a screen. I'm sure it has better air flow, but does not work as good as a filter.
@MotorvateDIY
@MotorvateDIY 7 лет назад
I understand what you are saying about how easy it is to see through the K&N filter, it does look like it is full of holes! As for the ability to filter the air, I will be getting my used oil analyzed this will and will have a look at the results. (typically silicon (sand) is high (> 30 parts per million) if the filter is not working well. I hope to change my oil this week and take in a sample. I had a K&N cone filter on my 99 Maxima for just over 300,000 Km it didn't have an issue. I suspect newer cars might have more sensitive air flow meters.

@enewkirk1 7 лет назад
I've had a K&N filter on my 2000 Nissan Maxima for 16 years, up until last year. I had a Blackstone oil analysis done and my silica levels were in the 100's. I changed back to paper recently, in the past 6 months, and will do another oil analysis to see if the silica drops, which I think it will. I don't think it's adversely affected my car, although I did have to replace my mass air flow sensor like constatbuzz above. I have since, in the last 2 weeks, given my Maxima to my 15 year old son and purchased myself a 2013 G37xS. I'm ecstatic...

It may not produce much HP gain, but it certainly allows more air into the engine whilst still providing excellent filtration. An aftermarket filter only pays dividends on more highly tuned vehicles, that can benefit from more air into the engine. On a standard vehicle you will see little return, other than the ability to clean and reuse the filter.
@MotorvateDIY
@MotorvateDIY Год назад
It really depends on the design goals of the engine. On the 370z/G37 the engine makes peak power at 7,000 RPM so it is designed for high air flow. Anything to reduce intake restriction will result in less pumping loss, which makes more power.

@MotorvateDIY
@MotorvateDIY 7 лет назад
Nutjob Joe, I will do it if you do it :) Actually some cars loose power without an air filter, if they have mass air flow fuel injection. When the air box doesn't have a filter, the air turbulence is much greater and confuses the mass air flow sensor. As a result, it does not provide the correct signal to the ECU and the fueling is incorrect.
@ruckus48

Nutjob Joe You'll also toast your engine. I'm a motorcycle mechanic and have seen first hand numerous times how dirt in your engine leads to failure. Use an air filter, unless you have more money than sense and can rebuild your engine whenever it shits the bed because of dirt in the combustion chambers.

Got one in my 2019 Mazda3 hatchback. If it gained 7whp, it's worth the 50 bucks. The noise alone is worth it because the Mazda3 is engine bay is so insulated. Cork Sport sells an intake system for $200. It's a short ram which draws in hot air and makes 5-7whp. I bet the K&N with the stock box is just as good or even better since it draws in colder outside air.

My K & N filter on my 2ZZ-GE really made a huge diff! I’d guess like 3-4hp gain and I felt all of the gains at 4000-5500rpm, right in the toque dip zone! Hi, I live in Brazil and I have a 12/12 nissan tiida, I acquired a sports air filter (national), with the high performance polyurethane foam material, it has in theory the same kind of k & n maintenance, we use for the process neutral detergent and after washing, we greased the same mineral oil (Vaseline). I did the maintenance of it already 3 times, in the last I exagerei in the oil and my car came to give the light of engine anomaly, code (sensor maf p0102). From the first moment I thought that I had damaged the sensor, however I did the cleaning with a clean electric contact and now working and apparently the engine seems more round (obs: in the cleaning I saw that the air box also had a lot of oil and I cleaned it too she). As I had this problem with the oil exagerate, it is justified that in maintenance we have to be careful and not exaggerate in the oil, otherwise the maf sensor would certainly have suffered, over time.

Hey Thai Gyro, Thanks for you comment. Have you done any testing with the newer "dry" style filters? As you know, many people are worried about the oil in the filter hurting the MAF sensor.
@artthurman3446
@artthurman3446 6 лет назад
Not specifically for MAF failure testing. In the past, we have seen tests results from K&N and a few others. We believe that the conclusions clearly show no failures due to K&N oil contamination. Urban legend is not an accepted form of data, for us. When we do expensive testing, like dyno runs, we ensure proper sequences to avoid speculation. We prefer oiled cotton, like K&N over dry. Both can work fine, but we do a lot of dual sport and motard bike engines, so get into dusty conditions, where the oiled cotton, we believe, protects better. Never experienced a MAF sensor failure due to filter type...most sensors fail due to design style or simply manufacturing defects. Hot wire MAF's are delicate, but a good one will last many years, if the entire system is well maintained. The real contamination problem that we see, comes from either the PCV systems performance or the fuel tank vent/vapor system failures. Often, these use shared plumbing, adding to diagnosis complications.

I have a K&N air filter housing and filter. I'll be honest it's a pain in cleaning and adding a really thin layer of K&N oil. I usually park my truck for the day and put it in the next day just so the really thin oiling has absorbed/semi dried so the wet oil on the filter doesn't screw with my sensor and bugger it up. Horse power gain hardly noticeable. Too much work involved with a K&N air filter in my opinion, considering when buying a disposable you quickly put it in and eventually toss it and buy another, it's time saving. I do recommend if you do go with K&N kits buy another filter to have previously oiled and ready so you can just toss it in without the wait. I also noticed too that the filter get's dirtier faster which is contributed by thin layer of oil in my opinion which requires more frequently cleaning and going through the process again.

You want to measure the air intake temperature. While the coolant temp plays a role in the engine temp scaler in the ECU, IAT is where the car will pull and it effects air density. This is the same across any motor.
@MotorvateDIY
@MotorvateDIY 6 лет назад
Hey HybridNz, You are 100% correct! I have learned a lot since that video was shot (July 2016) When I re-test the filters (clean K&N, dirty K&N, new Infiniti filters and no filters) I will data log air intake temp, MAP, baro, TPS, injector pulse width, oil temp and a few others. I also built an air density calculator/data logger using an Arduino Uno and Bosch BME280 sensor to calculate the air density and density altitude during the test. (it also calculates J607 and J1349 correction factors. Also, I can data log the transmission and diff oil temp with another Arduino Uno and DS18B20 digital temp sensor. Can you think of anything else to data log?
@MotorvateDIY
@MotorvateDIY 6 лет назад
Hey HybridNz, For Nissan/Infinti vehicles there are a few apps (Torque and OBD Fusion) that offer enhanced diagnostics and provides access to just over 200 manufacturer PIDs. That's how I datalog injector pulse width, engine oil temp, fuel temp, etc. This car has a factory wide band (air/fuel) sensor and I use that for data logging. At one dyno session I data logged the factory wide band and compared it to the tail pipe wide band. When I compared the ratios, the tail pipe wide band was just wrong! With WOT @ 3,500 it showed 14.0, the factory was as 12.0 Then is did a weird jump from 11.2 @ 5,000 RPM to 16.0 @ 5,500 then down to 9.5 @ 6,200. Maybe the shops sensor was messed up, or maybe the cat changed the oxygen level during the dyno run. I don't think you can trust an exhaust tip mounted wide band when the car has a catalytic convert.

The bad thing about this is that you gain torque and hp but it performances at a higher rpm, and in a city use or always low rpm use it doesn't works too much because you're not always driving at 5000 or 6000 rpm. I have to say that it really saves fuel, for my 2.2 L Cavalier gives me an average comsuption of 10 km per liter of gas, and with stock filter gives me 9 km pero liter.

Motorvate DIY yeah I know! But in a standar transmission vehicule the trottle response with K&N is unestable all the time, the initial acceleration feels a high pull and inmediately goes down and it's going on up progressive, like a turbo lag sensation (obviously it's not turbo). Yeah, anyway K&N gives an agile sensation of driving but it's a response with pics and lows, and in the high acceleration the results are noticible. And with the normal filter the trottle is softer and smooth and stable from low rpm range. It's curious, what I do is to change the filters every month to have both sensations and don't get bored hahaha. :D

I'm surprised to see such a high rwhp value on a stock, untuned VQ37VHR engine. The engine is rated at 332 crank hp at 7200 rpm and so with a 15% drivetrain loss with a manual this would yield about 282 rwhp. This value is pretty close to figures I've seen for most stock Zs on Dynojet dynos, as posted in the 370Z forum. With an automatic transmission, I would expect an additional 5% loss through the torque converter for a result of about 266 rwhp. I'm getting a Stillen Gen 3 cold air intake that has K&N filters on the ends of the intake tubes on my 370Z 6MT. Additionally, I'm getting an X-pipe cat back exhaust plus a dyno tune at the local Z shop. If I can get 310-314 rwhp I'll be very happy.

I understand what you are saying... but that is what the dyno showed. As I found out later, the dyno is a "Land & Sea" inertia dyno, so it is very different in design and maybe calculations... Also, the car has a 6 speed manual, so that last 5% doesn't apply here. Good luck with your dyno and let me know how you make out.

If you aren't crossing at 5200rpm. You have a timing problem. I'm tuned for a 2 stage 20 and 40 shot in my 2009 Scion TC. And I am timed late and still cross on full spray at 5300. . . .. .. .

Ummm if you look at the formula, HP and torque should always be equal at 5,252 RPM... I don't know what you are talking about.

I used dual K&N filters on my previous car, the 2008 350Z with the VQ35HR motor. I changed the oil and sent a sample to Blackstone at 20K miles. The report came back as very high traces of metals, dirt, and particulates in the oil Blackstone asked if I was using K&N filters, to which I confirmed. They recommended that I change back to the stock paper filters. I sent the next oil change sample at 25K miles and the report returned much lower traces of invasive materials in the oil. The moral of this story? K&N definitely filters better and lets more air in but at the cost of higher traces of particulates. Meager power gains aren't worth the health of my engine so I have skipped K&N since then.

Hey GalvatronTypeR, Very interesting. Is your UOA posted anywhere? I would like to have a look at the details... Here are my used oil analysis reports: (1) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uvExyfxzsRo.html (2) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cU8UMlMzi30.html

Hey karlt10, Thank you! Once the funds are in place, I will be going back to the dyno for a re-test. BUT this time using brand new Infiniti filters, used K&N and even no air filter. It should be interesting seeing what the data shows!

+6tq and 14hp is insane for a filter. I've seen CAIs give less gains than that. Very cool.
@MotorvateDIY

It all depends on how the ECU/PCM/DME is programmed and the design of the engine. The engine in the G37 is designed to make high RPM power at the expense of fuel economy. Thanks for your comment!

@@MotorvateDIY Was going to go CAI, but this is much cheaper and just as effective. I'll probably either get the ark or stillen exhaust to go along with it :)

I have a 13 g37 with around 65-8k miles on the odo, noticed my paper filters were dirty and threw these in bc of this video. Butt dyno says it’s definitely worth the money

I'm a youtuber with 900+ videos. A 2018 F150 with the 3.3 v6 make 290 hp. So if I put a K&N air filter in there. The engine will make more hp, per K&N. The problem I have with that is. The 2018 5.0 v8 make 395 hp and use the same stock air filter.
@MotorvateDIY
@MotorvateDIY 6 лет назад
Hey blackericdenice, That is very interesting... as a rough calculation, if you multiply peak HP * 1.6 that will give you the cubic feet per minute of air required for that horsepower. So, for the v8, 395 x 1.6 = 632 CFM. The K&N filter (33-2385) flows up to 783 CFM @ 1.5 inches of water column pressure. As a rough guess, it looks like the filter in the 3.3 v6 is oversized as the v6 only needs 464 CFM. All manufacturers like to reduce the number of different parts as much as possible. It looks like the 3.3 V6 has a V8 sized air filter, but that is only my guess.

AAAAHHHAAAA!!! You used K&N drop in filters! THAT's how you made more power! LOL

Hey Vince Fernandez, Yup! The stock intake on the G37 is very well engineered. The air intake is in front of the the rad, just behind the front grill.

It definitely gives you more horsepower I put into all my cars specially performance cars I will definitely see the difference and you could gain anywhere from 5 to 25 horsepower depending on what type of car it is and if you run Royal Purple in your car and you put it on a Dyno 100% you'll gain 15 horsepower all my buddies put Kane in in Royal Purple and older vehicles in mine and we all have Beemers Audi S4 GTRs and Lambos and it works and when we run at the tracks All We Do race fuel with royal purple and K&N air filters and Porsches and that's all we run

Hey fwh79, The K&N filters do seem to work well on the G37 (or more specifically the VQ37VHR engine) In the late spring, I will be going back to the dyno for a re-test comparing a new Infiniti air filters, a K&N and just for kicks, NO AIR FILTER. I can't wait to see the results!

you can poke holes in the stock filter to increase flow and hp, of course, it would shorten the life of the engine just like the k&n does

If you don't think they work well, don't use them. On my 95 Maxima, I used K&N filters for about 12 years and when I sold the car, it had 398,000 Km on it, didn't burn any oil and ran fantastic. They work for me.

@@MotorvateDIY I know for a fact K&N filters do not work very well, back in 1991 I used one on a 460 ford until the first oil change, I did not like finding dirt in the intake post filter. after watching another video of yours I think it is pretty clear you are paid by K&N
