The 318 is truly a hugely underrated engine for making solid torque numbers and some good Hp . The blocks and bore stroke combo is pretty darn good. They rev well and if you get a 68-74 block you have a baby 340 block as far as metallurgy and strength. I am doing a strong 392 stroke combo myself right now for my 68 Dart 2 dr sedan. 🎉🎉🎉

Interesting. My 414 made 461hp@5300, 511ft;lbs@3900. Pulls hard as hell from the low end. Will destroy some tires. I've got a 4 speed Duster. Enjoy!

The more I look and listen, which is what my good ol-Dad told me to do at a very young age I learn great things! I received a street rod way back when I was building hot rods for a So-Cal franchise in Colorado Springs! It was a 1949 Plymouth business coupe. Which had an 8” ford rear end in it , and a “get this” 1975-80 AMC Pacer front clip, with a 318 and a 904 trans. The motor seemed pretty tired when I received it and everybody said they were pretty mediocre or less motors! You know the old adage there is no substitute for cu-inches! Most all the 400 or so cu-inch 318s kick ass! After watching many adept mechanics and Dyno tuners test these little motors it has become more tantalizing to me ! Especially after watching yours. With iron heads !? Wow it’s north like it’s a heavy as car! And I have a new found respect for the street racers that did this conversion! I love the car because it is what I cut my teeth on back when I was starting out in the business, taking auto shop in high school back in 62. I’m now retired , I’ve had the car for over 20 years , and really wanted to pro street it , which of course I can’t afford! So this will enable me to rebuild this 318 , stay light , and have a hell of a lot more fun with it! Thanks guys! I’ve got to watch the building videos, I’m stoked!!! Regards Mike S.

If you're simply looking for a really streetable motor, you nailed it. Nearly 500 lbs of torque is very respectable. If you're wanting more from this engine it could use more cam, preferably a Hughes Engines getting closer to .600 lift and their Big Mouth port job. You'd probably get into the low 500hp range.

454hp / 497 ft lbs Torque... 318 Stroker =390ci.
@danbuchner1494
Terry Brighton built a 390 that made 535 and 535 trq at 5300 rpm
@looneylonzo28
I took my 85 dodge ram charger 318 out went 30 over SRP flat tops 10,000s out the whole with the smaller combustion chamber 302 casting head with a 52 to 54 cc chamber pump cam 236/242@50 490 lift@110 Edelbrock air gap Holley 750 produce 421 hp at 6100 RPM and 440 torque at 5200 RPM. It was a great engine although it was a struggle with those heads for higher RPM I switched up to a set a 360 heads and I could make more RPM but I lost horsepower and torque roughly about 30 horse is just under 40 in torque I restart engine for three years after I drove it on the streets for a couple years but I finally clearest the cylinder walls. I got a little greedy on timing. It did not like 37°. I’ve since then built a 372 and I did a 421 in.³ stroker all still utilizing cast-iron heads. I like a good square motor yawls motor is definitely gonna be a torque monster being it’s under square I know that helps tremendously with the weight of higher piston speeds. what machining did you do to the head? Did you deck the block? How much did your deck the heads? What’s your static compression or overall compression?

Such an underrated cam, especially in a stroker.

Thanks for the captions, I love this engine in my 1980 Power Wagon. Maybe one day I’ll do a 390 ci build.

GENTLEMEN... AMAZING AND MUCH MUCH MUCH MORE...
@RANDOMNATION907
Nice and torquey. Advance the cam 6° to bring that powerband down lower in the rpm range and it'd be a sweet engine for a Jeep. imo
