I maintain, this is the best machine Dyson ever built, before or since. It is also quite possibly the only machine Dyson ever made that actually cleans thick carpet well.

Thank you for this video, im not sure what was wrong with mine but once we got the switches and redid the springs and everything i tested to make sure they work and they did. I put it back together and it has worked again. It would orginally turn off if you wanted to use the wand or it wasn't in the upright position

I have a DC17 that was left on the curb during one of our neighborhood’s bulky item pick-ups. It was filthy. In fact, it looked like a pet had vomited on it. Being the DIY person that I am, I thought I’d see if I could clean it up/fix it. It took me a couple of hours of disassembly and cleaning. The vortex chambers (or whatever they’re called) in the canister were completely impacted/plugged with dirt and pet hair. In fact, I had to use needle nose pliers to pull all the dirt/pet hair out of them. After a thorough cleaning, reassembly, and new filters, this has turned out to be the best vacuum we’ve ever owned. With that having been said, and not wanting to have to disassemble the canister again, after emptying it outside each time, I always blow the canister out with compressed air. Doing this has kept the canister clean as a whistle. And I’m careful to be sure the lower canister gasket stays in place. It’s not a problem if one simply pays attention while putting the canister back together after emptying it. One issue I encountered is the cord started to get warm during extended use near the plug. With its two motors, this machine draws a significant amount of current. I solved the problem by replacing the existing plug with a 15A plug that’s much more robust.

I picked up mine from a bulk trash day, too (it's my second Dyson find, I fixed the first one, but I'm here for the DC17 which powers for half a second then shuts off. It looked weirdly clean, but from everything I'm seeing, I bet that top part is impacted with crud. I like the canned air tip - I'm all about prevention. Happy Bulk Trashin'! 🤩

Good to see you finally servicing a 17! Definitely one of the best Dysons and way better in quality than the 33 (The 33 is a downgrade to the 14 and 17). I have a 14 and 15 and while they don’t perform as well as a 17 they are still pretty cool machines.

I still have mine to this day. Bought it new 15 years ago, and it's a workhorse. Mine has developed some sort of weird issue though where if there is a partial blockage on the wand there is a popping noise, the sound tone changes, and the airflow gets diverted so there is no suction from the wand. The only thing that seems to fix it is to turn off the vacuum, wait for it to spin down, and then turn it back on. I'm guessing there is some sort of redirect or bleeder valve in the assembly somewhere that maybe has a spring that has grown weak with age.. but really have no clue. Any suggestions?

My family bought this machine 15 years ago brand new and it got replaced with a DC 65 since then the vacuum went up into our attic because it stopped having suction then when we brought it to my dads work it really stopped having suction and it wouldn’t run correctly, I took the entire machine apart change the washable filter change the HEPA filter since the HEPA filter had never been replaced clean the entire cyclone of clogs change the belt and brush bar and the machine now runs at least twice a week at my dads work.

Appears all my switches are good other than the third smaller momentary contact switch seems to always be shorted. I tried powering on with that disconnected to see if maybe needed to be switched to open, though didn't make a difference. Still no power to either the brush or vacuum motor. Guessing either connection down on the lower head side or one of the motors or something is bad. Any thoughts?

Go to your local repair shop and see what they can do for you. Unless you're trying to put this in a vacuum collection I recommend you just replace it at this point since most of the parts are discontinued. The SEBO Dart would be a worthwhile upgrade.

I bought my DC17 new and at $699 it was a huge purchase but I love it and still use it to this day. I take the cyclone assembly apart completely on a yearly basis, but really had trouble this last time and had to use a screwdriver to take the upper and lower assembly apart like you did at 6:32. I essentially ruined that gasket with my screwdriver. I took it to a local vacuum repair and was told this particular gasket is no longer available. He put a thin bead of silicone around instead. Do you know if there is any place I can find this particular gasket?
@ronwilgenbusch1961
@ronwilgenbusch1961 Год назад
Tammy, I redid the seal by removing all the old silicone from the groove all the way around. Then used caulk gun and clear bathroom silicone in the groove, the. Put it back together while the silicone is still fresh and it seals great. Just don’t get too much silicone squeezed out, it will make a nice mess for you to clean up.

Ron, it sounds like you did exactly what the guy did at the vacuum shop for me. My only concern is how I'm going to get it apart the next time I clean the entire cyclone unit. I guess I will deal with that when the time comes.

When I disassembled my cyclonic filter, I wasn't sure how the bottom piece came apart, so I literally destroyed my silicone gasket. When you showed how to take it apart, I tried it, but wasn't having any luck, so, I used a small screw driver and a putty knife. Needless to say, I no longer have a silicone gasket. Where can I find one?

Hi Tom, I clean out my cyclone once a year and am always amazed how much gunk is in those tubes. This last time however I had a hard time disassembling as well and ruined the silicone ring. I took it to a local vacuum store that works on Dyson and was told this part was no longer available. He put a very small bead of silicone around the piece. Not sure what will happen next time I go to take apart, but for now it is still working. Love this Dyson!

I have a DC17. My current issue is the roller bearing for the belt. It slipped out some years ago, an I oiled the bearing, and got it back into place. But the holes on the tension unit are worn out and it keeps slipping out. It is a pain to put back in. Are you saying there is a shorter belt I can use? Do I just take that belt tension unit out? What is that part number and where do I get one?
@PerformanceReviews

Order the brush and belt from the description and you can just take out that belt tensioner and run it without. You on social change your filters at least once a year.

19:29 Properly seating the bottom portion of this filter appears difficult without some sort of special purpose tool. Based on your video, the filter seems to need to be compressed in order to push it into the proper position within the filter housing. I'd like to better understand how this is possible in the lower portion of the filter cavity. The top side appears much easier since it clearly has more access. My Dyson 17 worked great for the last 15 years, until yesterday. I accidentally ran over a small rag roughly 5 inches long. It got wrapped up in the brush and a split second later the brush stopped rotating. I assume (but do no know) this caused the brush motor to be damaged. Do you know of a reputable seller who has these motors available as a new OEM part? Not interested in a cheap foreign made aftermarket replacement motor. Although this appears to be a somewhat complex tear down and build up, I have to say, the DC17 has served me well. It's an excellent vacuum.

Normal caulk gun and tube of GE(General Electric) silicone clear bathroom caulk. Remove all the old silicone from the groove and squeeze in the new silicone and put it together right away to get the silicone to set up and dry making a good seal.

And I particularly love where he says, "Oh, and p.s., this Chinese aftermarket brush roller will destroy any carpet" as he's putting one into the unit. Seems to me to rather defeat the purpose of a vacuum. My intent is generally to clean the carpet without destroying it,
@PerformanceReviews
@PerformanceReviews 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching I just wanted to clarify something there. It's not just the aftermarket brush roller. it's the actual design of the brush roller that destroys carpets. Also I found in the review process the machine's not particularly powerful in terms of suction.
