I had always wanted to try out a Dyson vacuum but didn't want to pay the high price. I found this one in a Goodwill store for $17.99 and thought I might be able to restore it.
replacement filters from Amazon that worked for me.www.amazon.com/dp/B007REQF4M/...

I got mine for free but the cyclones were so packed full of hair and dirt that is kept the shape of the cone, I ran like brand new before I cleaned it but after I cleaned it, it was a completely different machine. The condition of the bin on your machine is incredible by how nice it looks. Great find and hope that it performs like new till death, thank you for reading this😁

Thanks! This is the best Dyson DC-17 video on RU-vid. I've had one of these vacs since Dyson released it. It has always been a great vac. I was looking for a belt replacement video and found this. I've kept mine pretty clean, but after watching your video i feel a total teardown coming. Great job! Thanks again!

The "Animal and Asthma" designation is an accessory pack, and the top cyclones are blue instead of purple like a regular dc17.

I got my DC17 Animal with all of its accessories a year ago from Goodwill for $10 red price and it was a real find. The only thing that was wrong with it is that the brushroll that was in the machine when I bought it, it had a shot end cap and the soleplate on it was not in good shape. So I had another DC17 Animal which wasn’t in the best shape, but it had a good Brushroll and a better soleplate. So I used those two parts from my other machine to restore the one that I got for just $10 bucks. It was also really badly scuffed up on both sides of the cleaner head, so I used an eraser sponge to get rid of the scuff marks. Other than that all I had to do to it was clean it up and polish it. Now it looks like a brand new vacuum, sounds like a brand new vacuum and runs really well. For a Dyson vacuum just bought for $10 Red Price, I cannot complain.

Sheba 3/22 Wow. This was done by a very accomplished & seasoned teacher! If all sessions were done by similar expertise & teaching skills, we would feel confident about fixing and keeping up our vacuums. I am so enthused about this resource/teacher, that I can't wait to take apart my vacuum. I can see the accumulation of debris/dust/hair around the core separater. My filter is dirty more often than expected and I want to figure out why I'm hearing a noise. However, I'd like to know why, if these problems are such that U-Tube has numerous sites to help us novice owners, why isn't Dyson, itself, working on eleviating the problems so that we don't have to take our machine parts apart and clean them!!? My local Good Will once told us that they don't accept Dyson donations.....because they are too difficult to fix! Dyson...........Help us. We like your machines but we don't want to have to clean them....we just want to use them! Thank you Every BladeOf Grass Do you have other presentations? Please let me know.

Thank you for the kind words! I think these older machines have some design flaws, I don’t know if Dyson addressed them in later builds.

Hello in the video you mention the silicon gasket between the two parts at timestamp 14.82. Mine seems to be falling apart when I opened the unit. Do you have any idea where I can get a replacement or alternate materials I can use? Thank you. And thank you for the video.

What do you think of this Dyson half a year later?

It is still going strong works very well. The only downside if I had to pick something is that it is a big machine.

How did you get the bin so nice and clean, like how did you get it to look some what new ?

I got pretty lucky as the canister was not too bad but used lots of elbow grease to clean it up

Hi! I have a Dysen 17 absolute which stopped sucking.. Thanks to you I was able to completely take it apart and clean it out completely. I took off the push button switch panel off but the motor does not turn on although the brush bar does and works good. The suction still does not work so I think I really need a new motor. I had gone ahead and got new filters so I feel it is really worth replacing the motor. I am not a mechanic and in fact I am 80 something old so really don’t want to buy a new vacumn. Can you tell me where I can find a replacement motor. Dysen and Amazon don’t have any for sale. Any ideas?

Unfortunately you only have a couple of ways to get some of these spare parts 1) is find an old vacuum at a thrift store, or 2) eBay but you take your chances with that

Did you need to replace any of the filters? You said that Dyson doesn’t make replacement parts for this model anymore, so could you link the parts that you recommend for replacement? This is the exact model I have and I am sure it is very clogged with pet hair as my daughter moved home a few years back and brought a Golden Retriever/ Husky back with her. Her hair was so fine I am still finding it in my house a year later. I need to replace filters and the brush on the bottom. Thanks for any help you can offer!

Hi Nadine, I did need to replace both the filters. I put a link in the description of the ones that I ordered. They fit just fine. They do have a strong smell right out of the box. I let mine air out in the garage for a week and also sprayed a little bit of scented lysol and that seemed to take care of it. My brush bar is still ok so I haven't had to order a replacement yet. I have heard that on some of the replacement bars that the bristles are a little shorter that the brand new dyson bar but that they still work

I order the filters in ebay and belt as well, and did open the whole thing up and cleaned it and now works as a brand new one again :)

That's funny...I'm not laughing at you...I'm laughing because that is a legitimate question. The attachments are very tricky to get back on for the first few times until you see how they attached and secured to the vacuum...especially the little round brush...!!! 🤣

Hello sir: I have this DC17 MACHINE. Have a problem with it. the vertical part is stuck with the horizontal part and vertical part would not recline. I have to use lot of force to do that and it would make a loud sound when doing it. I feel something might break while putting force on the horizontal part to get rid of the stuck part. do you know what might be wrong with this stuck problem here. thanks. is there a way i can contact you over the phone. thanks.

I own a DC17 DYSON vaccuum cleaner and was stuck in the upright position and wont recline. As per the video, I lubricated the parts responsible for the slide mechanism on the undersurface on the right side with WD40. it worked and now my vaccuum is working just fine and smooth and reclining easily. thanks

I’m glad that it worked out. These older machines sometimes need good cleanings and lubricating to bring them back to life.
