I wanted to find out why my DC50 wasnt cleaning as well as it should, so I took apart the Dual Cyclone unit at the top of the machine. I couldnt find any guides online on how to do this, so this video explains how I did it and shows the various parts.
I forgot to mention, you need POSIDRIVE screw drivers for this. Also, when reassembling the unit, I mention the difficult to reach screws at the very top of the unit which screw the lid on top of the cyclones.
I found that the tube in which the air filter slides into, can actually be removed. To do this, squeeze the tube at the bottom (sticking out - you will notice 3 tabs on the tube), and twist anticlockwise while pushing upwards, and the tube will come out.
This makes it much easier to access the screws to reattach the lid. To refit the tube, slide it back in from the top and push down hard until the tabs click over the lip on the cyclone unit.
I hope this may be useful for some people looking to dismantle theirs. As it so happened, the blockage was actually well hidden away in one of the tubes and not the cyclones.

Thank you for this tutorial. I wasn't able to find the screws for the top layer but now I'll know where to look next time :-) For replacing the deep screws I find it helps to place the screw on the tip of the screwdriver with the driver pointing upwards, then lift the cyclone so that the screw stays in place. Hope that helps. Have a great day :-)

Very handy video, especially the tips on the secret screw and the difficult associated with removing the lid. All really useful, Thank you for taking the time to prepare and share.

Yeah,,, Dyson and there "Sneaky Screws". Am sure we are supposed to miss them, then force and break the Flimsy Plastic. Then Spend more money on new plastic bits. Cunning Business Plan, Mr Dyson 😡🤬🖕 He doesn't like people like us lol.😂👍

Hi, I'm sure I just found your DC50, in a box, in bits, outside your house !! Lol. Well done on a Good instructional, and informative video. Dyson really dont like people, like you and me getting inside and fixing our own vacuum. Even the Dyson Engineers, dont go this far. They will just swap the Cyclone for a New one. (Warranty) Or just tell you your vacuum is beyond repair, (only blocked),, imagine labour cost of a Dyson engineer to do that,, or to change Brush Roll Motor. I have done loads of Dyson vacs over the years, but this is my first dc50. What a bloody farce. 1 T15 torx driver, 7 screws and everything was in bits,,, Then the Ball arrived and the World turned on its head. Lol. Big Thank You. Thumbs Up from Wales 😎👍 Great vid.

Thanks for the video. I have dismantled it fully, before watching your video, however when putting it together i couldn't remember where that rubber goes as I thought was somewhere underneath mesh. You have clarified this for me, so I took 1 tier of cyclones off again and indeed found the exact place this needed to go. It wasn't that hard to put in place as you stated, so was very pleased. BTW. I didn't have those screwdrivers and managed to remove this with tiny flat ones. To access last set of screws to remove them as well as put together I have removed the middle plastic pipe, which is removable part, held by three clips. It was then much easier to remove those. Also when putting it back i first slided those screws into holes, which was easy enough with that plastic pipe off... Hope this will help someone. Thanks again!

Excellent video which helped a lot. The rubber seal mention at 4:50 is indeed delicate and I used a minute dab of rubber cement during replacement. At 5:50 you mentioned a likely problem replacing the lid screws. I found that by inserting the screws first and applying a dab of the handy rubber cement the screws stayed in place long enough for me to locate the screw holes in the lid. As you say, tricky but doable. Finally at 6:40 you mentioned the little red bit that activates the dust release and for the life of me I can't seem to line it up. The Dyson works like new again (with the exception of the dust flap which will be another rainy day project) Thanks again.

Thanks so much for making this video. It helped me disassemble the DC50. Upon reassembling, it was much louder than before. After some troubleshooting and rewatching your video, I realized I lost that black end piece on the spring, d’oh. Anyhow was able to fashion something with tin and foam for gasket and it seems to work now.

Great. You covered the parts missed by many strip downs.

I took apart an extensively used DC39 once the one with the single row of Cyclones (not the improved 2-tier or Cinetic) and I’m shocked it doesn’t really get anything stuck up inside the Cyclones. I wouldn’t recommend disassembling your Cyclones

I was stymied by the secret screw at 2:47 unfortunately. I'll have to get a thinner screwdriver - but anyway, it seemed to me that these are smaller than the T10s mentioned at 1:57?

I cant remember now, I recall having to use 2 sizes of screwdriver. What i do recall however is that the "secret" screw did seem to be a different size at first, but for me, it was full of dust making the screwdriver not want to fit into the screw head correctly. You may be right though, I cant recall now...
