Dyson V11 Torque drive Head repair - When it stops spinning and gets stuck

Today was the unboxing and testing on the Dyson V11 Torque Drive, the newest and (at the time of this writing) the most expensive in the Dyson fleet of vacuum cleaners.
In the first magical moment of the first run with the torque drive we are riddled with disappointment. The brush did not spin. I found this most surprising and upon closer inspection confirmed that it was indeed stuck. Removing the brush from the slot revealed that a piece within the unit was broken a round ring, later found in Amazon review circles as the "shipping ring" or the "ring of death" I didn't know at the time, but was forced to pack up the whole unit at the store and return it for another.
Coming back with the second unit from another store location (same store) and the SAME piece is broken. I search reviews all over for this issue and found nothing, till I looked in Amazon, and that is where I heard all of the complaints. Armed with the info I called Dyson, who now after several months admits there is a defect and offers a replacement for this, I was able to procure one free of charge, and as demonstrated in the video, repair the unit I had by removing the useless ring and returning the unit to working order. Problem Solved!
I quickly take a look at the second head when it arrives and confirm that it has the same part inside that the old one had, though it may be from a different material.
The wife conducted a retest and was satisfied, note that all tests in the video are done with the repaired head, not the replacement. We start where we left off with initial testing of the unit on both carpet and bare floor, this carpet we just got and has a fair amount of dust from the warehouse, a good candidate, we can see and hear the unit shift automatically between mediums. Emptying proved to be little hassle. You need only consider where to put the attachment down.
We then use the car as a good example to demonstrate the different attachments. Car carpet is always a challenge to clean with both texture and contour. We try all attachments, for better or worse to find what worked best and was safe for the different materials.
If you're willing to spend the cash and you like clean floors and cars...and fans....and electronics.....and computers the V11 is a winner.

Thank you very much, Retro Tech Man! It just happened to my brand spankin' new V11. I can't believe it. A little plastic piece, the same color as the ring you pulled out with your tool, was rattling around in the brush head. Unbelievable. And the funny thing is my unit shipped direct from Dyson as I ordered it from their website. I'll call them in the morning and explain the problem. Again, I can't believe it -- but THANK YOU for posting this video or my husband and I would still be scratching our heads. Cheers!

Thank you so much for your instructions, I had the problem of my roller stopping every 10 to 15 seconds. I even heard a small piece of "something" when shaking the roller. So, I took the roller apart as suggested and what I found was a massive amount of dust clumped all around the entire end of the roller. I cleaned it out with tweezers and now the roller is rolling away. Thanks again for your help in dismantling this piece, thankfully all parts are still intact.

Finally someone addressed the root of the problem when it comes to a non spinning brush. This was definitely the video I was looking for because my brush head on this unit did not want to spin after I've gone through every single thing you can think of and it's not working. The question is why would I want to keep the peace of crap if it's gonna do it again? Well now I don't have to worry about it. I called Dyson very friendly service and they would send out a free part, but now ill have 2 heads. Works for me.

My problem is that the white ring after being used at boost mode all the time it burnt so it still spins but now it sounds like its having friction.

I have a v11 and the plastic that the circular disks covering the elbow screw into broke and so they both fell off. Have you seen that before and know of any fix? Dyson sells replacement disks which are of no use given the plastic they screw into on the torque head's elbow are broke off.

The only thing I know so far is that it stops it from working. I imagine it was designed, to block the dust from getting in. Ive been using one for over a year without one with no ill effects.

Had the exact same issue as you but with V10. Customer care was nice to send a replacement free of charge. P. S. I noticed that just like your attachment head, mine had a blue pen mark on the white plastic above the broken ring. Probably it was marked as faulty but maybe not taken out for some reason

What's interesting is that while this issue is acknowledged (and has been resolved; no recall to my knowledge), not a single source on the internet has actually demonstrated precisely what caused it in the first place. That's really telling, and that information would be needed to draw any inferences, as many Dyson brand-haters are more than eager to, so you have to be weary of those jumping to conclusions. They love to congregate on videos like this and you always see the same names. It doesn't happen to all of the original heads, just a tiny number-possibly one batch, as you've suggested. Most people have never had any issues of any kind whatsoever. It is interesting to see though what a known problem looks like. Removing the broken collar will work, as you nicely demonstrated. The white collar to the side of that acts to both plug the tube to prevent too much dust going down into the drive section, and also acts to stablise that side of the tube. The broken collar piece also stabalises, so removing it to avoid the jam could in principle enhance vibration and cause a small amount of noise (as some have noted in the comments below). But it shouldn't impair principal performance, as you showed. And given everything is under warranty for exactly this kind of issue, none of it is really a problem. Some manufacturers, such as Shark, make users jump through hoops to get spare parts like this, and the user experience stories sound horrendous. You can't fault Dyson's customer service, really.

For me the other ring infront of that white ring had 2 parts snap off. After that the brush roll rattled more and the friction wore out half of that white ring and left 2 ridges on the inside of the brush roll!!! I tried to fix it using some lithium-molybdenum lube and it seems to have made the friction much less.
@retrotechandelectronics

Sounds like you had more than the regular failure. As id looked through hundreds of the known failure for this unit, i've never read that component called out.
@theboz5206
@theboz5206 4 года назад
@@retrotechandelectronics Indeed. All the ones I saw online have been the same ring from your video. The white coloured ring on mine literally had half of it turn to string from the friction and you could even smell the burning plastic. I could inbox you some pictures. It will be covered in lith-moly lube but will still show the damage.

I purchased the Dyson V11 Outsize July 2020. End of December the Torque Head broke. There was no ring in there to remove so couldn't do that fix. Because they didn't have another head in stock I had to send the machine back and they replaced it Jan 10th. Well first of April that replacement broke. Again no ring to remove. They don't have another head and didn't have another outsize in stock so they sent the origin and I had to fight to have them send me another battery. The origin does not have 2 batteries. I am wondering if the ring is there to keep the dust out of the motor. I do notice that behind that ring gets a lint "ring" I am wondering if the dust getting into the motor is taking it out. After the first vacuum broke I was cleaning out the roller head each week because i was concerned that lint was not good. I have had several Dyson Models and never had a problem with them. I love my Dyson and they have send warranty but it is frustrating having to go through all the hoops and sending it back. Hope I don't have to send back every few months.

@@retrotechandelectronics Guess what the one they sent 9 months ago just broke again. It seems to be after I put the machine in Boost mode. I still wonder if dust gets into the motor and it overheats. The ring is not broken but I do get a lint ring. I don't have any carpet in the house but have some flat runners on the floor. I do have animals so I get lots of pet hair but I have made it a point to keep the XL Torque Head really clean. I have not had this issue with any of my previous Dysons and have kept one older one so I have one when the V11 fails.

Wow, I can't believe that you managed to receive 2 defective units in a roll, its impressive that you maintain your composure. But at least its been upgraded. But I think that I will just stick with my old Kirby Sentria, I found at a Garage Sale about 15 years ago for about $20, its may be a heavy dinosaur but it's self propelled, and has never had a single issue. On the other hand, my year old LG side by side refrigerator just broke down. Fortunately it is still under warranty. The repair service came today and decided that it needed a new compressor. While it may be a cliche, I will say it anyway: They don't make them like they used to. Edit: The attachment for the car seems to be highly practical.

Given the distance of the store I opted to call them about the second head. It was in doing so that they admitted the problem and offered to express ship the corrected unit. Since this was the only issue with the vacuum and I have 30 days to return, I decided to wait it out. AND, I ended up in the end with two torque drive heads.

My v10 head outside side (where you use a coin to open) is glued together between the cap and the tube, and it stops it from spinning. I figured it’s due to height heat and the two pieces of plastic parts melted and glued to each other. They have poor design and really bad material used for something experiencing high speed rotation. Failing company.
