I too am feeling my starter is weak (E350 4Matic wagon) figure I will wait for the cold weather to get here first. Unless I get stranded before then. And thanks for the trany line Tip.
How did you wiggle it out? I have a 1999 e320 Base Sedan and it doesn't seem to have enough room to wiggle out of the housing as it hits either the engine or the mount. Any ideas?
@@slickrick3617 i saw online you have to remove the alternator and passenger motor mount, then lift the engine like 20mm. I passed on it and took it to a shop and they said the battery was at fault. (Enough to turn on electronics but bot enough to get the starter going) so had that issue fixed
Sorry for the late reply, I'm not great at getting notifications when I have a comment or a question. I don't remember exactly how I was able to get it out but I do not remember touching motor mounts or lifting the engine at all. I would have to think deeply on that but I'm almost positive that I was just able to maneuver it to get it out. Maybe it is a little bit different on the wagon than a sedan
Actually it's possible to take it out. You lift the back side of the starter while pushing it towards the front of the engine. It will come out of the bell housing after that you can then pull it down. I've done this several times on a W164 320cdi. On the w164 it's difficult to remove the 10mm and the 13mm nuts, so I pull out the starter first, make it face up towards the catalyst the I can remove the 10 and the 13. On installation I do the reverse
@@farooka25that’s a whole different car tho, I’m currently having this problem where I have the starter out but can’t get it completely out. How this guy got the starter out without jacking the engine is kinda mind blowing
