E.T. (1982) gave me goosebumps!! Movie Reaction - FIRST TIME WATCHING

The E.T. puppet, costume, whatever it was was designed and executed so well and they gave him so many emotions and expressions it was amazing! Drew Barrymore thought ET was real and everyone made sure she didn't find out. She would talk to him all the time off camera and they would move him and play along.

I grew up with this movie. Seen it dozens of times over 30 years. Still sobbed through most of this video. Awesome, respectful reaction.

George Lucas returned the favor to Spielberg for the Star Wars references in ET by putting some ET aliens in the Senate chamber in Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace. So when ET sees the kid dressed up as Yoda and says “home” he’s not wrong, lol!

Happy to see you watching another 80's classic. I also highly recommend The Dark Crystal, The Goonies, The NeverEnding Story, Legend, Labyrinth and Willow.

I recommend "*batteries not included" from 1987.

I first saw this in the theater when it came out in '82 and I was 7. It was the first movie that I remember crying at because of the end when E.T. left. It was powerful and had an impact on me. I love that "key man" (Peter Coyote) is revealed to just be a curious government scientist who doesn't want to harm E.T. and was apparently very much like Elliot as a child.

E.T. is genuinely one of the great movies of all time. Editing, acting, cinematography, the MUSIC, it all works beautifully. Has a simple story, yet it's one with a universal message about growing up.

My grandmother took me to see this movie three times in one week when it first came out because she loved it as much as I did. I also remember hearing my 4 yr old cousin down in the front (the theater was too crowded to all sit together) wailing when ET died. I still cry every single time I see this movie. Glad you liked it. ✌🏽

In a behind-the-scenes featurette for the movie, Elliott actor Henry Thomas revealed how Drew Barrymore (Gertie) was very imaginative. The cast and crew encouraged her to believe E.T. was a real alien.

This was the first movie I can remember seeing in the theater . . . I was four . . . and it completely scared the sh$$ out of me. From the moment that Elliott runs across E.T. in the field, I was ready to be done. Have since come around on it, but anytime I see it, I remember that early trauma. Also, I think we should all appreciate that we are able to enjoy Reese's Pieces pretty much because of this film. It was originally supposed to be M&Ms, but they refused to allow it to be used. Reese's Pieces were very new at the time, and not doing well. So this is probably the greatest piece of product placement ever in a movie! Also, would strongly support a reaction to The Neverending Story . . .

The Neil Diamond song 'Turn on Your Heartlight' was inspired by this movie.

E T. was a combination of puppet and a person in a suit. During the drunk scene where E.T. staggers there was a boy who had no legs inside the suit walking on his hands. When you only see the arms it is a lady mime performing. The voice was a combination of animal noises, actress Debra Winger and an old woman the sound guy heard in line at a bank.

Great reaction to a beautiful film! Also totally agree, John Williams scored his heart out with this one... one of my favorite scores by Williams. Very inspiring!

Another great movie starring Henry Thomas as a child is Cloak & Dagger. It came out about a year after E.T.

One of Henry Thomas' immediate follow-ups to *E.T.* was the spy thriller *Cloak and Dagger* (1984), which is very entertaining it its own right. I also enjoyed him in his teenage supporting role in Milos Foreman's *Valmont* (1989). An interesting counterpoint to *E.T.* is Joe Dante's *Explorers* (1985), which features the film debuts of Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix. Another amazing kid actor performance in a Stephen Spielberg film is that of the young Christian Bale in *Empire of the Sun* (1987).

It was an amazing year for film scores. John Williams won that year. Legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith was nominated for "Poltergeist". Man, it just isn't the same anymore.

I have a history with this movie. I went to school with the sister of one of the kids' friends. In '84 I dated a girl that lived across the street from that park, and we used to go up to that high dirt spot (where those kids were biking) in my car to make out after we'd gone skating. Well spotted, recognizing Elliot as the actor from Hill House. I’m impressed. This was the first film I remember seeing in theaters when I was 5. Then years later, we played a John Williams medley in high school band, and I got to play the flute solo at the end, as his ship gets ready to leave. Great reaction and movie choice!

A similar alien scifi movie form the 80s.. Flight of the Navigator.. a Disney live action film that was one of the first movies to extensively use CGI. Maybe not quite on the level of ET but it's really fun and has a lot of heart.

Thank you so much for reviewing another 80’s classic. This was my favorite era of film. I was a toddler during this era. I remember crying for 1st time in the theater when ET was dying and later, when he flew off at the end. ..it still gets me to this day. I know you’ve reviewed a number of 80’s films. Try the Dark Crystal. -It’s rarely reviewed and it’s a hidden gem that’s done incredibly well. ✌️

Let's not be too hard on Keys, as he's only doing his job. He does literally nothing wrong and shouldn't be considered a villain. He's just doing his job protecting us from free loading illegal extra-terrestrials and dolphins. Keys is a hero to the #HumanityFirst ideal. Fun Fact: Yes, that is the voice of Harrison Ford as the faceless teacher. That was a different actor when we barely see him. Bonus Fact One: The filmmakers had requested that M&Ms be used to lure ET, but The Mars company denied their request, fearing that ET was so ugly, he would frighten children. Reese's Pieces were used instead, and as a direct result, Reese's Pieces sales skyrocketed. Because of this, more and more companies began requesting that their products be used in movies. However contrary to popular belief, this was not the birth of product placement. Bonus Fact Two: The doctors and nurses who work on E.T. are all real emergency room technicians. They were told to treat E.T. the same way they would treat a real patient, so that their dialogue and actions would seem as real as possible.

I don't think there was a dry eye in the cinema when I saw this as a kid. ET was the reason many of us got BMX's.

You need to watch the 2019 E.T. commercial. It gets you in the feels.

The novelization of the film characterizes ET's people as a race of botanists, collecting samples of Earth's plant-life. There was a read-along storybook with a vinyl record to play along, and it was read by Michael Jackson.

My theory is that E.T. wandered away from his group while on a class field trip. The teacher aliens were in a rush to get the kid aliens away from the dangerous humans and didn't do a complete head count until they were safely away. I've always thought of E.T. as a child about the same age as Eliot.

I loved this reaction and now I want to watch ET again! I never really realized how the adults except the mom were not fully seen until the end. It's seems almost as if they are seen from a child's level and from the level of ET so that the audience feels like Elliott or ET. Fun Fact, Neil Diamond wrote a song for the ending credits called Turn on Your Heart Light. It became very popular. I hope you can give it a listen.

That scene at the dinner table when they're talking about their dad going to Mexico...it took me WAY too long to figure out why the mother was crying. It's because the dad ran off with another woman to Mexico, and abandoned his family. So sad. I feel sad. 😥

All the kids were talented little actors and Henry Thomas nailed his role. I'm not familiar with the movies you recognized him in as an adult, but he also plays the youngest brother in Legends of the Fall with Brad Pitt, Aidan Quinn, Anthony Hopkins, and Julia Ormond. It's an excellent family saga.

You will have had several comments already about how magical and yet so distressing this was for those of us who were very young when we saw this back in the day. I was 5 years old and it still remains one of my most memorable cinematic experiences to this day. I refused to watch it for many years later, so emotionally devastating it was to me. Now as a 43 year old, it still packs a powerful punch. John Williams' score is utterly spectacular, one of his finest.

Fun Fact: The screenplays for both E.T. The Extra Terrestrial and Poltergeist were developed from an unproduced script by Steven Spielberg called 'Night Skies,' which was originally intended as a horror movie sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, about a family in a remote farmhouse being terrorized by aliens. It was inspired by the real life Kelly-Hopkinsville UFO encounter in 1955. Spielberg had written the script, and makeup effects creator Rick Baker(who had previously worked on Star Wars) had designed a prototype model for one of the aliens, but the studio decided to cancel the project because they didn't want a horror-themed sequel to Close Encounters. So elements of the Night Skies script were re-written into two separate movie screenplays - Poltergeist, which retained the horror theme of Night Skies and replaced the aliens with ghosts, and E.T., which focused on one aspect of the Night Skies script where a child in the farmhouse befriended one of the aliens who turned out to friendly. Rick Baker's original model for the Night Skies alien(which had a much more sinister appearance) ended up being remodeled into the more friendly-looking E.T. alien. Also, some elements of Night Skies ended up in Gremlins as well. Originally in Gremlins, Gizmo was supposed to become a gremlin and be the leader of the Gremlins. Executive producer Steven Spielberg decided that the original Gremlins script was far too dark and suggested allowing Gizmo to remain a friendly Mogwai, and introduce a new character to be the leader of the gremlins, 'Stripe,' who was based on the Night Skies character 'Scar,' the leader of the hostile aliens.

This movie is definitely a classic and has withstood the test of time, now nearly 40 years. There was another classic alien film that was released in June of 1982, only two weeks after E.T.: John Carpenter's The Thing. These were two completely opposite takes on the possibility of encountering an alien lifeform: One was friendly and meant no harm to people, and the other was about as hostile as one could imagine.

I'm so glad you watched the original version. They did a remaster for DVD which replaced the ET puppet with animation (like the Star Wars prequels did with Yoda). I was so disappointed with the result; they just could not recreate the charm and subtleties of the character.

I am so glad you watched and reviewed the original theatrical release version and not the social peer pressure PC version that Spielberg felt he needed to apply some slight changes. Every original release is generally the "director's cut". I think most directors who re-released their masterpieces but added and changed things because that was the thing to do at time,...almost all regretted touching the original version as it compromised their original vision and it seemed to pressured or gimmicky to add in or change things that were throw aways or would have changed the tone of the film. There was a valid reason why these scenes never made it into the original version to begin with...

The sequel of him coming to visit Elliot and his family for Christmas is a must see!

My (hopefully) interesting facts for this movie: 1) The tie in game for this movie is famously one of the biggest flops ever. The majority of the cartridges for the game were buried in a landfill. 2) During the Halloween scene, ET sees a kid in a Yoda costume. This was a nod to Spielberg's friend, George Lucas. Lucas returned the favour years later by including a cameo of ET's race in the senate scene of SW Ep1:The Phantom Menace. 3) Spielberg purposefully shot most of the film from the eye level of a child to make the audience further connect with the 2 main characters. 4) According to the novelisation of the film, ET is about 10 million years old. 5) Spielberg purposefully shot the end of the film last to evoke an emotional response from the child actors as they see ET for the last time.. 6) The film cost around $11 million to film, which was pretty low, even back in the early 80s. Of this budget, 10% went to the cost of the ET model and associated animatronics.
