It was my first RC car in 1985. Who cares how good it was? To me it had screws to turn and nuts to remove and work on all day long. I even filled the gearbox with oil and then had to clean it all up when it leaked out over night! (remember that it had a cover that said "oil") I was the king of the neighborhood since I had the only "real" RC car. I got an RC-10 the next Christmas, but that grasshopper was like my first kiss.

That's right, being good has no bearing on how great it is. I also filled my My Pumpkin with oil, leaked for days! I got a used RC10 and Hornet the same day. Immediately i realized how great the RC10 was but how fun the Hornet was. I still have those 2.

My dad still has his RC10 T2 trophy truck. It hasn’t ran since i was a little kid so i decided to pick it up and try to get it to work. It’s really nice working with my dad on something we can relate to and bond over. Found out im terrible at soldering, lol.

@@AMPROEngineering What about The Frog re-release? I always wanted one when I was a kid. I had a Big Wig, but never the frog. The Frog was THE car to get back then, hands down. Are there better newer cars for the same money? I can't lie, I would rather not build one. I just want a car to take out with my nieces and nephews. Why are these cars not good?

I had one of these back in the mid-late 80's. It was my first RC. Still have nostalgic feelings about it. I was stationed in Korea at the time and we raced these on a small dirt track on base. Had a heck of a lot of fun with them every weekend.

Hi, I won Rosset and Wrexham off road electric 1985 with a grasshopper, I did upgrade the battery to a Tamiya racing pack, rs 540 black sprint motor, and I stiffend the suspension by putting washers on top of the springs, was on a low budget but it worked 👍👍👍👍👍

My first real RC car 33 years ago in 1985. $108 at Hobbyco in Sydney Australia. I went down to the shop to look at the box and sneak a look inside for many months before I managed to convince my parents to stump up the cash for it for Christmas. In the end I got it. A year or so later a mate managed to rustle up enough money to get his hands on a frog. I rebuilt my grasshopper for the 100th time, loving oiled it and readied it to take on my new competitor. It got absolutely smoked. A much bigger motor lol. A few years later I stuck a gold motor in my grasshopper and it was like it was fired out of a gun. It would have dusted the frog which had gone by the wayside (gear box problems). It wasn't a car for seven year olds 30 odd years ago. It was bloody expensive all in all and the only thing I had. a hope of getting my hands on. Great memories.

In the 1980's many young boys including myself flipped through the Sears and JC Penny Catalogues picking out our Christmas gifts, every year the Grasshopper made that catalogue. I ended up with the Striker as a child even though every Christmas i wanted that grasshopper. Well at age 41 i just bought a ready built grasshopper kit and like you said, i was all smiles driving my new Grasshopper, couldn't be more happier now that i have the Grasshopper. Thanks for the video.

I had a similar experience, wishing it for xmas for 5-6 years, best I ever got was a radio shack 1 button remote, itty bitty remote car. The button made it to backwards and turn to the left. If you let the button go, it went forward by itself. No way to stop it. Absolutely the worst excuse ever for a "rc" car. Eventually i got a job as a 13 year old and saved enough to buy a used sand schorcher. In reality i didnt quite have enough, but after a year of trying to buy it from him, he let me have it for 140 or so. Saving up a 50 cent weekly allowance wasnt making things quick either. Car was awsume!

So many people want to add brushless to these classic cars and they are not meant for that. Tamiya stuff is scaled to speed that's why they include the brushed motor. It's just for fun. My kids love the cars just the way they are and never wanted them faster. You have some great products and videos. Oh, my little brother put the RX540VZ motor in his grasshopper back in the day and it almost destroyed the car cause it went so fast.

I had the hornet myself as a kid. I had all the hop ups on it. Back then in the 80s early 90s there was one company that made waffle tires for the rear, I ran those tires and they were awesome. I wish you could still get those waffles, they might have been prolines? I ran my hornet almost always on pavement and I had the Kyosho 240st motor - NOBODY could beat my car in a drag race. LOL Fond memories. That trademark sound of the grassshopper rear tires on pavement grabbing, it's burned in my memory.

Yes the 2005 re release got the Tamiya 101BK ESC I believe. Yes the bodyshell is easy to break (esp tail if you crash land) but easier for youngsters to build - no cutting or spraying. With a sport tuned 540 and an ESC you get plenty of speed. I had a 14 turn LRP in mine for a while - killer. Its a Grass Hopper - so called because of its un damped ride! It literally bounces (hops) along. It actually performs better on sand or rough ground. Plugging the battery in (just finding the socket even) can be fiddly as. It has a differential, which given the 3 point suspension, is interesting🤓

I’m with you on the “leave the Grasshopper alone” (other than ball bearings) idea but I ad a wrinkle. Grasshoppers should have 380s…but… I have two hoppers, one is basically stock, box art, but the motor is a LRP Fusion HT modified 380 motor, and the Tamiya ESC. It’s very quick and is a blast to run on a flat dirt surface like a baseball diamond. The other one has those aluminum oil shocks from China (front and rear, but the rear is still a solid axle/pivot), a Duratrax VR3 modified 380 motor and, oddly enough, the mechanical speed controller for that old-school feel. It’s also very quick and is a fun beater/basher. The tires and wheels are from a Fast-Attack. I gave it a fun, oddball paint job and sticker job to use up old stuff.
@AMPROEngineering

had a hornet as a kid. Just bought my first kit in 30 years. Got a hopper for my wife and myself. I was worried I would be let down. They are still awsome. For some reason I always wanted a grasshopper even though I had a hornet. The hopper is way better for kids even though the hornet is better value overall. I constantly crashed my hornet. The 380 is perfect. The only thing ill do to mine is sport tune 380 and maybe tires for different terrain. Modern-day controls and esc makes these even more fun.
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering Год назад
I totally agree. The 380 in these is a great speed. Both of my kids have hornets with 380's in them and it is a much more controllable speed. The modern electronics, in particular no more mechanical speed control, also help!

i still own mine from the 90s and it has Akkad the upgrades like the oil shocks the 540 motor and the upftaded bearings and whatever else was available then the only thing else i would add is that after all those years it still runs like crazy fast and the kids in the neighborhoood are always begging to race their new Radio Shack Christmas gifts that the old Hornet kicks their asses on pavement or dirt the irony is even though I'm much older now my driving skills came back very easily so its funny to watch the kids be suprised that the old guy Can whip them and watch them being entertained by something they never saw before I crack up when the parents call me asking questions like where can the get one like mine i laugh because i was a adult in the 80s and had a real job that i could afford fun toys I actually have always taken good care of things so luckily that was one of those items. I even have the original box and paperwork I'm glad i watched your video i didnt know about the re releases they put out over the years but i may have to look into it. Ar my local shops And online although i always buy RC at a local shop to support the advice and support they give you although my Wife did buy some airplane gear from Tower. One time years ago like spare engines and misc other stuff no biggie as it was things i wanted as spares and back ups for mock ups anyway i guess my original. Reason for commenting about the cars was for the Money. I personally thought they were good values for fun reality of they provided me and freinds over 30 years of Playing without rally any major. Issues or replacement parts needed other than tires and minor maintenance items mine did have pins with a clevis clip to attach the body instead of screws ? And i honestly do not remember that being a upgrade or aftermarket. Item but it could have been Because i did Hang out in a shop and bought. Anything they had for them at the time and i did race in some local events with a few buddies That were also grown men

Another Great Vid keep it up XD btw as a Turbo hopper fan i was looking to buy a retro Re-release of a hobby grade buggy so i can have the charm of the turbo hopper with proportional steering and throttle, something like a scorpion, hornet, or grass hopper what would you say is the biggest differences between the hornet and the grass hopper
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 6 лет назад
Well I would say that the biggest difference is the cosmetics. But mechanically, the Hornet has a superior rear suspension design with oil filled shocks and an articulated trans. The drive-ability difference is massive. The Hornet is way more composed that the Hopper as it is also lighter since the Hornet has a lexan shell.

Excellent video! You got the Mrs. filming while you run? Lucky you :-) Love how you explain why Tamiya ESC’s do not have LiPo cut offs ;-) I’m not too sure if a DT-02/03 will be a good choice for a 5-8 year old. A bit too fast? The C-hubs and knuckle arms will break just by looking at a curb. Well, anyway, here in Europe they actually cost less than a GH so there will be 30 left, just enough for some aluminium :-) I think a ‘versus’ some day will ve interesting. Not like a competition, but like a comparison of the differences and the similarities.
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 6 лет назад
Yes I do and I am fortunate that she likes doing that. As for the lack of Lipo cut off, can you think of a better reason? Haha! You think it is too fast? Silver can right? One of my major thoughts in that DT02 are all the kids around me. A few neighbors have really high end cars and bought their kids, ranging from 4-11, cars by Traxxas, ECX and some other brands. I thought they were all too fast. In fact, when I was running my GH2 for this series, one of them came out to talk to me (6 yrs old) and told me it was too slow but good for a 3 year old. Uhg... You are thinking a VS with a DT-02/03?
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 6 лет назад
AMPRO Engineering I think your explanation is the best. Tamiya works in mysterious ways :-) Maybe I’m too influenced by my own childhood. A Turbo Panther was furious and fast back then, as you know. It’s a bit of a shame that really young kids are getting those fast cars nowadays. ‘Fast’ do not neccasarily mean ‘learn to drive’ or ‘enjoyment of controlling your vehicle’ or ‘looking at a cool RC on a run’. But yeah, if they have seen another kid with a Stampede 550 12T with a LiPo or a 7S NiMH a stock GH seems very slow. Oh, the VS comment was more directed towards you saying you wouldn’t compare the GH and the GH2 because people buy these models for different reasons (like which one they remember from their youth). But it’s still fun looking at the differences and similarities :-)
@NordicRC
@NordicRC 6 лет назад
AMPRO Engineering Maybe a ‘VS series’ some day? :-)
@AMPROEngineering

Good point, fast and learn to drive are very different. Mostly, I see kids laugh when they RTR gifts crash into a parked car and break. I wasn't like that as I kid as I knew how hard it was for my parents to afford such things. I mean I guess it is also where I live. No one other than me has a car older than 5 years on my street thought as far as I am concerned, my 1980 Toyota is barely broken in. OH, I see what you mean on the VS thing. I think that is a great idea! I think I will do that.

I just bought one of these and am wondering how I can restore it and make it look nice. Can I fix a big chip in the body with Bondo or something? and how do I clean it? Will sanding the plastic help with huge gouges in it? And what paint do I use on the wheels? They look faded and I want it to look like new.
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 5 лет назад
Great question. For a resto, the body should just be replaced (new ones are cheap) and use the old one for driving. If you want to fix the old one, super glue gel is best to fill holes and dimples. It dries like steel and never cracks like bondo. You can see me using that in my Tyco Bandit body restoration. To clean the car, take it all apart and wash every plastic bit with dish washing detergent and an old tooth brush. Dry it all well and re assemble but do not get electronics wet. They can be cleaned with a damp paper towel.

Great video... of the various cars and trucks what would you recommend for introducing RC to kids? Here's the list of RC's I'm considering: Lunchbox, Comical Grasshopper, Grasshopper, Wild WIlly 2, Blackfoot and Hornet. I want a kit car that we can build together so any RTR car is out.
@AMPROEngineering
@AMPROEngineering 5 лет назад
Great question. Of that lot, my favorite for little ones is the Grasshopper. It is the most durable, slowest (depends on age but my daughter is 3 and the 380 motor is very controllable for her) and still fun to drive. It is bad at offroad and grass so if you have more dirt and grass around you the Lunchbox and WW2 are great. The lunchie is super easy to build as is the Grasshopper and Hornet but the WW2 and Comical GH will be better offroad. The Blackfoot is the worst of the bunch due to the awful transmission, weird handling and the driveshafts that constantly pop out. I'm oldschool so I would go fir the Hopper or the Lunchie but in reality, the WW2 or Comical Hopper are the better ones.

These gearboxes are really, really strong. You will never wear the gears out. What you will do is crack the diff main gear if you land on a high grip surface with the throttle on. Still, those transmissions are strong.

Do you make an upgrade that will stop it from flipping over when I hop bumps and roots? The front end takes it nicely and gets a little air, but the back end flies up and the car does a face plate. Well good question. I personally do not like getting my RC cars wet so any mud or water is a big no for me. Since these cars are so simple, there is little maintenance to do. Jut put the car away clean when you are done and park it on something so that the tires dont touch the ground. I would also recommend the ampro battery door so the door never, ever comes off again. These new lithium batteries do not like to get dragged around. It is shown in episode 70.

Bearings will go on the car in place of the kit plastic bushings. If you are getting the car for a child, get some 7.2 battery packs with the white tamiya/molex connector. Lithium Polymer batteries are way better but very dangerous for a child. Do not us those batteries.

The rear suspension is not used at all under load. The rotation of the motor locks the suspension to full extension. Removing a spring is good for low speeds but it can't jump at all anylonger.
