HP Umpire Phil Cuzzi ejected Reds RF Will Benson for arguing a strike three call to end the top of the 8th inning in a game Cincinnati defeated St Louis, 19-2. Cincinnati ran out of bench players and had to substitute the designated hitter Nick Martini into right field to take over for the ejected Benson, invoking the now-seldom rule whereby a team loses its DH for the rest of the game if the DH plays in the field.

Cuzzi is the most consistently reasonable ump I’ve seen so far. He tried to defuse it and when the guy kept chirping he got thrown out

It's a 19-2 game. Swing the bat. Nobody is going to want to hear a player complain when their team is winning by 17 runs. Cuzzi showed a lot of patience.

this is one case where the umpire went beyond the call of duty to keep a guy in the game… even though that guy is doing everything in his power to get into the showers early. And… it was the correct call. When are they going to learn… Balls/strikes.. Your opinion don’t matter…

Benson was successful in 40% of this game. Compare that to Phil who was in the mid-90s.

I've had most high school (different rule) and college coaches ace similar changes like this with "Senzel staying in the game, my DH is gonna play defense, Pitcher is now batting for Benson." "I got it coach." Announce or signal changes and we are on our way. Yes, we all also have had to spend some time for some coaches who don't got it but why are 3 MLB conferring and holding Bell's hand?

Because MLB managers don't get hired for their capability to be masters of the intricacies of anything more complicated than the double switch.

But one MLB ump could take and understand the sub. Why 2 then 3. Ah Ha, subs have been messed up by an MLB crew and they all paid the price, one reason to get together. Or knowing that Cuzzi is having to school Bell the crew wants to be privy to the conversation in case Bell screws up and quotes the PU incorrectly although the PU should insure no illegal changes occur.@@teebob21

That pitch was a strike in every situation: a 19-2 blowout, or bottom of the ninth in Game 7 of the World Series. RoboUmp says so; and RoboUmp is never wrong.

The umpire was completely wrong. Each player is the representative of Major League Baseball and whatever League they are playing for, not the umpires. The umpires are just there to call balls/strikes, safes/outs, fair/foul, etc. The umires are not the authority on the field and they are not the official representatives of Major League Baseball during the game, the players, managers, coaches, ball boys and sellers of hot dogs are the official representatives of Major League Baseball. It took many years to come to this conclusion. The Official Rule Book is wrong. The Almighty Player is right.

I swear lots of MLB players like Benson are so stupid and can't seem to have common sense and take into account the situation and the importance (or lack thereof) of the call they had an issue with. Players complaining in blowouts especially when their team is winning is beyond dumb and childish. Benson's strikeout was so insignificant cause you're WINNING 19-2!!
