Try leaving your column disassembled above site glass until your heads are gone. They will vapor in to air. Then add your botanicals and condenser to finish up.
Methanol poses no real threat unless you intentionally add it ... think about it logically: beer and wine aren't distilled, and people don't die drinking those... a little research into the matter and you come to find that all documented cases of methanol poisoning associated with moonshine, were caused by shifty shiners adding methanol to increase volume, while attempting to maintain a higher proof... toss the foreshots/heads if they're outside your taste/potency preferences, but fear not the infamous methanol... It's an old wife's tale... aside, you could keep them and collect enough for a 2nd distillation... or use it as a cleaner/stripper
Hey Randy, another nice video, thank you !! I'm just getting caught up on some of your earlier videos.` Did you do any straining of your solids before running your wash? If not, did you experience any scorching ?? This recipe looks like it would be great. You will like electric when and if you ever get converted. I understand that the mighty mini running electric with a 1650W element and a home-brew SCR is nice ,,, "especially this time of year" But I wouldn't know anything about it personally, ha ha. Love Mile-Hi !!! -- den
After fermentation I siphon into boiler and leave all trub behind. The Peach whiskey did turn out fantastic and i am looking forward to electric. Cheers!!
Can you put the site glass ABOVE the reflux, run it as a reflux to get better infusion? Or does the reflux eliminate all the flavorings to the point that the gin basket contents become moot?
could he put the reflux head below the sight glass then just put it in reflux while he loads the gin basket instead of shutting down? I understand he would have to hook up the hoses which I understand he doesn't want to do.
Nice videos. Like your set up. I run a 3 gallon Mighty Mini which I love. Would like to use a sight glass like you do as flavoring basket, but I would have to place mine at the base of my column. Do you think that this would be worth the expense being that it would be at the base of my column?
Just a thought......place an extension tube about 12 to 18 inches long, packed with you copper or rings directly on the milk can, then add the sight glass, and place the column on top of the sight glass. If it acts "Top Heavy" just use a wire and "Tie" it to the wall or a shelf, etc... I would not put the sight glass directly on the milk can. Just my opinion for what it is worth.
Thanks for the opinion. Wasn't really all that sure that a sight glass directly directly on my pot was such a good idea either. Am considering adding a sachet bag with spices in it attached to the top of my column below the out tube and see if I could flavor my spirit that way. Any idea on that. Thanks
the main reason is as the alcohol molecules rise water will stick to them the mesh will heat up and it will help knock loose and some people say you have to have copper is the still
@stillworks and brewing with a grain mash? Merriam Webster's definition for brandy is "a strong alcoholic spirit distilled from wine or fermented fruit juice." Seems like it is indeed a hybrid: COOL! How'd it turn out?
@@fredwilliams420 that video was a long time ago but I remember it was very good did not last long i need to make more I have said before us home distillers we can do what we want kinda like the craft beer do things a little different cheers!!
I don't pay much attention to pot temp. the important temp is the head temp. but with that said ethanol boiling point is 174 f and that is when it will start rising up the column cheers!!
Everyone has their own way of making Brandies I like cold process for Apple & peach . When it comes to making slop . And when Fermation is complete your fingers will not be sticky that means all the sugars have been converted .. to alcohol and its ready to Run .
