The E70 X5M is an incredible SUV right from the factory, but due to strict emissions and fuel requirements, the cooling system is way over-taxed. By running at a ludicrous 220 degrees, the car is more efficient as the expense of increased wear. To combat that, I have purchased five different upgrades to allow the cooling system to function at a much more reasonable temperature: sport oil cooler valve, lower temp thermostat, coolant additive, lower pressure radiator cap, and increasing engine bay airflow.
Today in part 1, we install the N63Intake sport oil cooler valve. The X5M already has an adequate oil cooler, but the factory thermostat spring causes it to open around 100 degrees Celsius. This modified valve will open at a lower temperature to allow the oil cooler to start working sooner. This will still allow the engine to warm up properly but maintain the engine oil at a much safer temperature. Install is shockingly easy, only adding a few minutes to a standard oil change.

It's been almost a full year and the car runs perfectly. It always stays around 180-195 for oil and coolant temps.

Mine actually already sits about at the after temp gauge point @13:45, but Im the second owner so I cant 100% say this wasnt done. But I'm ready for this and the 90C therm mod

"the idea of the oil thermostat is to bring the oil up to temp roughly 215 to burn off water condensate quickly warm up faster and eliminate engine wear caused by cold oil and moisture" Using this valve will deny that and while may do good for the reasons you mentioned in the same time will cause other issue on a long term.

That's not correct at all. Water will evaporate at room temperature. 190 degrees is plenty warm enough to allow proper oil flow and remove condensation from the oil. The car will heat up at the same rate, but stop at a lower temperature. This will in no way effect warm up. There is no advantage to running at 215 other than emissions and fuel economy. Every other aspect of the engine will be better including power, lower oil consumption, and longevity of every engine part including rings and bearings.

@@350Z247 Great response. Furthermore, @Universe it's still close to the 215 temp where the engine could and likely will still hit the 215 temp somewhere at other hotter spots in the oil flow. Sensors are only measured at the spot of measurement.

Get Protool from Bimmergeeks and you will be able to measure your oil temp accurately...along with everything else

@@350Z247 protool is great. U can use it to code stuff. U can monitor and log almost anything (boost, AFR, etc). Worth every penny.

@@350Z247 I use it on mine to log a few things. My e70 X5M has a Velos stage 2+ tune and catless Downpipes. Bigger turbos soon.

Any codes thrown now that it’s been on for a while? I’ve heard if temps drop below 93c then the Ecu May retard timing throw a code and mess with the fuel air mixture. Looking to do this on an 18 n63tu2 m550

My stock X5M runs the same oil temp as your new mod, would an even lower oil temp be beneficial?

Yes, anything you can do to keep the engine cooler is going to be money well spent. 180-190 would be the sweet spot.

Keep in mind, he lives in a very hot part of the country. Your temps might be the same as his new at whatever climate you're currently in... But that could change in heat waves or during travel. This mod will help you maintain that cooler temperature wherever and whenever you are. ***I don't have this car (yet) or this mod, but that's my logical deduction.***

Mine oil temp always sits to the left of the middle, much like your post swap picture, but then I'm also in Seattle where at most it reaches 80°F. Watching your video though makes me curious...why not just put something on the stem to raise it up higher vs this $150 valve? How much higher does it sit vs stock?

Because I'm not gonna put something janky on my $25,000 M engine. The $150 is more than fair compared to the alternative if something failed. As for the temperature, it's a must do if you're doing a lower temp coolant thermostat so the oil and coolant thermostats aren't fighting each other. Even if your temps are already decent, they could always be better.

@@350Z247 I work in aviation and we use hollow aluminum dowels for multiple things, point is it popped in my head that I could use a dowel on that pin to raise the valve for free since it seems that's all that oil cooler valve does...just spitballing, calm down lol. Janky is using a .10 washer in my turbo K swapped MR2's oil pump to increase oil pressure, but it's known to work. Also a rebuilt engine is $9000. I've been tuned and pushing over 700hp while spraying meth for 5+yrs so I know I'm on borrowed time and I've researched the inevitable. Admittedly I've seen the lower temp thermostat but the oil valve idea is one I haven't seen even though I've spoken to the owner of N63Intakes before. I'll be doing S63TU manifolds and turbos this Spring, at which time I'll be doing the thermostat and oil cooler mod as well.

Love your video. I'm about to do my oil change this weekend and was wondering if 5w-40 the recommended oil? I was told that 10w-60 will work also. Wanted to know what your thoughts are and the differences are.

DO NOT USE 10W-60. Use the 5W-40 Liqui Moly or 5W-50 Redline. The 10W-60 is way too thick.

@@350Z247 thank you for that. A indy shop told me about the 10w-60. Just recently picked up the 2011 x5m and wanted to keep it running as long as possible.

@@phonglee5879 yeah, no, it's a long story about why and how BMW decided to use that oil on the S54, S62, S85, and S65 engines, but even those should run on 5W50 now. The 10W60 is the reason for all the rod bearing issues. Avoid it like the plague.

@@350Z247 no wonder i hear so many stories about bmw issues...i also was wondering if you've installed a tow hitch on your car yet? if so do you have any recommendations and will you be putting up a video on that?

@@phonglee5879 I will be doing a hitch, but unfortunately, not for a good while. ECS Tuning sells the factory hitch with wiring harness for like $450. You'll need to cut a small square I'm the bumper, but it's not a big deal. There are a couple videos from hitch companies that are already on RU-vid. It's as simple as removing the rear fascia and replacing the rear bash bar with the OEM hitch. The truck is already wired for it, but you'll need to swing by the dealership to have them code it (or code it yourself).
