Thanks for a great video...my son and I did the pan gasket today on his 08 X3 and saved 1400.00 in dealer labor....one tip...the front differential upper bolts are a piece of cake to get to if you drop the subframe first..it leaves a gaping hole to get to those two bolts....it took us 10 hrs. to do on a first ever job like this...….

Wondering if procedure is same for 2008 X3 M Sport. What I see on video looks mostly doable but I've learned to be cautious after running into notorious BMW tight spaces. Thanks for the edited video that shows optimism during the repair, because we know there were moments of what the heck am I getting into and subsequent language. Well done!

bmw tech here. enjoying video so far, nice camera work. just wanted to caution you on the driveshaft hardware removal you are torquing that screwdriver handle directly into your oil pan oil level sensor ... couldn't really tell but looks like you were putting that sensor connector at risk for damage.

How is it that you stay so cool? Your confidence level is over the top. You also give a perspective why it cost so much when you have to take these cars into a mechanic, and why it is so important to have a mechanic that knows how BMW's tick. One note, I do think it's risky you haven't detached the lower steering shaft. Not sure how it connects to the steering column on the other side of the firewall but on the e39 that shaft can separate or even break due to the weight of the front sub frame. Looking forward to Part II. Thanks for sharing these amazing videos that will survive the test of time.

Pro-tip , turn the axel nut upsidedown, and thread it on half way. Then hit it with a hammer so you don't mushroom the shaft.

Hey,when you are hammering the driveshaft (axle) through the hub try using a heavy tapered (ball end) drift or chisel on the dimple in the centre and you will avoid damage to the threaded area, I also use a 1kg (4lb) hammer as the extra weight helps shock it out, I’m from Scotland in the UK so we are used to a lot of seized components here lol. Keep up the great work I watch all your videos

3 hours and I am no closer to popping that snap ring on the drive shaft. Mine must be glued in or something! I have pried, tapped, pulled and it's still in there!

Those subframe bolts (8, I believe) come loose and create a clunking sound when moving forward, or, backwards at low speed (ie. from a parked position) with wheels turned. A tidbit.

Hello, I bought a 2002 530i with the engine disassembled for $1K. I am new to BMW and was told that the oil filter housing needed replacement. The new part was in the trunk. I replaced it and reassembled the engine. When I attempted to start the engine, it sounded like it had very low compression. I tested the compression and found cyl 2 and 4 have zero compression. At this point I'm trying to decide if it's worth repairing. I am planning to keep and drive the car. How common is it for the head to be cracked? Also, with it not running, I don't know the condition of the transmission. What should I look for to determine the possible condition of the transmission? Thank you for any information!

You're going to have a hard time getting the axles back if you can't swing the knuckles out of the way so you have a straight shot. I think you will wind up further unbolting them.

After I did this job on my wife’s E83 X3 it messed the steering alignment. Even though there are guides to put the front subframe back in place it’s still 3 degrees off to the left.

Hello, I have a e46 330xi and wanted to swap it into rwd, but not sure the engine supports of the two are similar in the front. Do you think the two front spots of the xi subframe bolts into the same place as rwd? Do you think it would swapable? Thanks.

Great video. Is this procedure identical to the 2008 X3 with N52?
@50sKid
@50sKid Год назад
There will probably be slight differences but to be honest with you, they're likely to be minor. The N52 is based on the M52/54. Nothing changes that drastically. It's BMW's inline 6 engine sitting on a subframe that's bolted to the body. Pretty straightforward. Good luck!

I have a question and need advice. I am currently doing my oil pan gasket on e46 323. I accidently forgot to support the engine before i lowered the subframe. So i lowered the subframe about 2 or 3 inches with the engine ontop of it. I very quickly realized my mistake and set the engine support bar up immediately and jacked the subframe back. Is it possible that i damaged anything? This is my first time doing this kind of job. Thanks in advance!!

Konstantinos Papavasiliou would a vacuum leak from the intake boot cause the disa to act up?
@konstantinospapavasiliou46
@konstantinospapavasiliou46 6 лет назад
What is exactly the problem? Do you have disa fault codes? What car and what engine are we talking about? Vacuum leaks should be taken care of. Also disa valves can be mechanical damaged. The disa acts like a throttle body, the shaft could have come loose.... Check out 50s Kid's upload on disa valves, he explains very detailed how it works
@xcptcronchx
@xcptcronchx 6 лет назад
its a 2000 bmw 328i. There were alot of crack in the intake boot which is why I think I was getting some lean codes. I have seen people check the disa valve by taking it out but leaving the harness plugged in. When they put the key in the on position the valve closes etc. When I did that it didnt close. However when I checked the diaphragm myself it holds vacuum and everything. I just took it off to rebuild it etc. with a kit that comes with a billet flap and everything else to prevent it from breaking.
@konstantinospapavasiliou46
@konstantinospapavasiliou46 6 лет назад
I have a 2000 328ci myself. On this car the disa gets its vacuum directly from the intake manifold while the engine is running, no extra vacuum line. The lean codes are most likely vacuum leaks. You should first take care of them and then adress the disa. The disa gets activated by a magnetic valve which is build in the disa housing. You can easily test if it's functioning, if you have a diagnostics, with actuator select, or if not, by simply applying 12 volts on the disa electrical connection. Either way you should definitely hear it's working. If that's not the case, the disas magnetic valve is faulty, or the circuit of the disa harness is open. You should read battery voltage at the harness with ignition on
