Eagles, just awe inspiring. It's weird that they still use diet as a basis for taxonomy; lesser physical characteristics. I thought genetics were the easiest and most reliable method for taxonomy.
@Evilgood1
@Evilgood1 5 лет назад
commatoes like how falcons are raptors, but are more closely related to parrots
@search895
@search895 5 лет назад
I think it is related. Sea eagles are a filogenetic branch fir example. In Spanish they are called pigargos. All animal species are now classified by filogenetic families. I guess it just happens that eagle species or groups are usually similar in behaviour and diet.
@marcotedesco8954
@marcotedesco8954 5 лет назад
It's not really so much that they're using diet as a taxonomic tool; if anything, the two "diet-defined" groups (snake eagles and sea eagles) are each made up of species that are pretty similar morphologically and obviously related , AND that happen to share their preferred prey and the adaptations to that lifestyle. The possible exceptions are the Philippine eagle (because it's just so huge and doesn't strictly prefer to eat snakes) and the Madagascan serpent eagle (which is apparently closer to the weird vultures in subfamily Gypaetinae), but molecular data helps there. Genetics are also fundamental for resolving the relationships between those groups and other raptor groups (my understanding is that it's still kind of in flux, but basically those four major eagle groups arose independently from various groups of hawks and kites).
@tiacho2893
@tiacho2893 5 лет назад
@@search895 That is exactly my point. Similar traits can be explained by parallel evolution. More closely related populations might be considered unrelated because of plumage. Meanwhile, a completely unrelated species might be classified together on the basis of diet. My go to example of this is the speciation of marsupials in Australia, where they filled every ecological niche and share many common traits with non marsupials simply because they share a common niche, e.g. medium sized carnivore.
@search895
@search895 5 лет назад
@@tiacho2893 well i dont know a lot a out eaglez so i was just throwing an hypothesis. I meant a filogenetic group usually have very similar behaviours and diets, that is their evolutive difference is short. Perhaps that's why she said it that way.
