Earl Weaver argues with Umpire Bill Haller in 1980 at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.

I was shooting a story for PM Magazine on MLB umpires at the old Memorial stadium in Baltimore. We had wireless mikes on 2 of the umps for the story. The Orioles were playing the Detroit Tigers. 5 pitches into the game the umps called a balk on the Orioles pitcher and Earl Weaver came flying out of the dugout to argue the call. This is the raw, unedited and uncensored, video of the exchange between umpire Bill Haller and Earl Weaver.

That's because the call didn't matter. What mattered was team morale... so Earl hauls out of the dugout to put on some gorilla theater for the fans and the team. He's out there fussing at the ump for them... Instead of thinking about the balk, or thinking, "Damn... what ELSE is gonna go wrong?" Everyone's drawn into this animated back and forth between the ump and the manager. Usually, nobody by the people closest to the ump and the manager can hear what's being said anyway. Never in the history of the game, was a call made by an ump, ever changed, because players or managers threw a fit about it. NEVER. Everyone involved knew it going in... So 99% of the time, umps didn't even take these arguments seriously... and neither did the managers or the league offices... It was gorilla theater and it added some zing to the game. Watch Billy Martin, Lou Pinella, Tommy LaSorda, Sparky Anderson, Earl Weaver and more, venting their spleens to the umpires... and then, listen to the fans... look at the players and how they play. The game goes from "ho-hum... only 160 more of these to go..." to players playing just a smidge harder and fans even more into the game than they were before. We need to ditch the replays and crap from the game, and get back to stuff just like we see here in the video. It all was part of the magic of the game.

Earl Weaver was one of baseball's funniest characters and greatest comedians. But as a manager, Earl Weaver was also one of baseball's greatest tacticians and winners. The Orioles were pretty much perennial winners under Earl's watch, as he managed them from 1968-1982, and again from 1985-1986. And the only time Earl suffered a losing season with the Orioles was 1986. And yes, he was tough on his players...but he loved his players, too, and he always stood up and fought his players. In other words, Earl Weaver was someone you would love to play for.

@bitternarwhal5126 2 года назад
@@bigdaddyj452 technology has advanced, I’m sure if you offered replay to players and coaches in 1900 they would want it in the game, baseball in particular has this “it’s America past time and it’s been played this way for centuries so we refuse to advance” it’s why the game is dying, sure Covid but Baseball has been on a decline for awhile now, personally I think the time it takes for replay was counter acted with the extra inning man on second rule, no one wants to watch a 17 inning regular season game so why not save time in extra innings to compensate for replay?
@bigdaddyj452
@bigdaddyj452 2 года назад
@@bitternarwhal5126 the game is dying simply because the players swing and miss at an incredibly high clip. It's been like that since the 90s. Teams don't run anymore, everyone looks to hit a home run at every at bat and players have no idea how to hit to the opposite field so now they want to take the shift out. These guys can't bunt for crap or move a guy over. Go watch a game from the 80s and before. See how quick it moved. Pitchers stayed on the mound and batters in the box. Now they gotta adjust all the armor they wear up there. No more pitching inside to batters for fear of hitting them. No more taking out the second basemen trying to turn a double play no more knocking over the catcher to try and knock the ball out. It's boring now. To many delays and nobody truly focused on playing hard anymore. Each ab goes 3-2 and he works a walk. It's boring. I love baseball but it's so dumb how it's played today

I got a kick out of how he used to insert a pitcher who wasn't being used that day as his DH. That way, he would guard against the opposing pitcher getting knocked out early being on the wrong side of the matchup (LH vs LH or RH vs RH). He'd just wait until the DH at bat then announce a "pinch hitter" for someone who wasn't going to be used anyway. Lowenstein, Roenicke, Benny Ayala, Dwyer, Ford, Gulliver, Sakata, Joe Nolan...........the guy would match-up you to death. A real piece of work.
