I had a 1988 5 pc Rocker Kit with Power Toms and clear interiors as my first ever kit. The Kit eventually expanded to an 11 pc double bass kit by 1993. Bring back so many memories!
Great job on these. I had a mirror chrome set in the early 90’s I bought new. Double 24” kicks, 10’12’13’14’16,18 toms with modular hardware. Poplar wood. Gigged and recorded the hell out of them and finally sold it as 2 kits. I replaced it with a PDP maple made in Mexico kit in 2008 and it sounded 10x better. I can afford any kit I want but I’ll stick with these forever.
Obviously you never really know if a shell will be presentable without a wrap before removing it but these turned out to be quite nice looking, good job. Have you ever tried removing the speckle finish from inside of Rocker drums? Looks like it would come off relatively easily but I’ve been wrong before.
Thanks man and good ear man! Attempting to play some haha my dad was a millwright/jack of all trades so I grew up around woodworking, metal fab, mechanics. We had a shop out back he'd build furniture or even machines like log splitters and stuff from scratch as a side gig/hobby so this stuff is just second nature to me. I just don't have the artistic side to build furniture haha my brother got that. Most drum restorations are fairly simple but I'm still always learning, when you start getting into water damage repairs, ply separation, rering damage it gets a little more complicated but most are pretty straightforward. Disassemble, clean and reassemble. I'm not the greatest at "finishing" this was fairly easy but when you get into spraying lacquers and stuff I'm a total novice.
@@shawnsdrumcave Thats awesome that u had the opportunity to be around all those great trades and learn those skills. You do beautiful work to those drums we get to see on social media. I enjoy your vids and pics. Keep up the good work. Btw I have metal snares on my stand that are collecting dust. Whats the best way to remove the heavy stuff and wipe down, and clean up? Asking cause I know u pay attention to detail. Thanks man😀
@@rockdrummer80 thanks man! i've been fortunate in a lot of ways, not rich by any means but i'm definitely thankful for a lot! i start with disassembling, wash everything down with soapy dawn dish soap water, or soak over night in it, then a good chrome polish. if it's just light dust and what not a damp sponge and microfiber cloth should do it.
Do you know if these are the 4ply maple/poplar shells? If so these are the same shells as Neil Peart's Ludwig Super Classics....at so I've read in a few different places around the web.
They are 4 ply maple/poplar but these had the ludicoat (speckled) interiors. There is wide speculation that these were the same shells as super classics. I don't believe that to be true although they are similar.
@@shawnsdrumcave I was just rewatching an interview with an expert in Neil Peart's gear and he said the 4ply shells on the Super Classics were new at the time for Ludwig. Which supports your claim that they were different from the Rockers which had been using those shells for years already. So, it's plausible that they were making the Rocker shells and thought, "Let's make a higher quality version of this shell with better production standards and better looking inner plies, etc, for a new professional series." Does all that track with your own knowledge?
i've found on the shell they hold up fine but when removing/reattaching them the little nubs the screw goes into can be very brittle. snares can be an issue if you like a real tight head, i replaced those with bowties. these are all 100% i replaced any that looked suspect. thanks for watching!
@shawnsdrumcave My pleasure. From around 89 to 93 , 94 I played Ludwig Stainless I had a 5 piece kit, and added Chrome finished wood Ludwig on the high side. 10, 12, 16and 24 kick. 13, 14, 18 , 24 Stainless. It worked well together, the Chrome wrapped wood drums had a nice melodic tone and then ran down deep in the Stainless. Let me know where I can send you a picture and I get it right out.
Great job on the staining. Where do you do most of your buying and selling? Also, how much do you hate when you're looking for drums and cymbals online, and Reverb tells you... "looks like that piece of gear is gone" I get why they do it it, but jeez it's frustrating.
