Now that the gears, e-locker, and Ashcroft ATB are broken in, I took the Disco out to the local mountains to so how it all worked. Pretty pleased, although I think I'm going to regret not doing a locker in the front.

Great film. Once again, you must hate that truck. Starts well, good off road, took that side slope well. Landrovers are just rubbish like people say. I must sell mine; it’s too reliable and capable to be a keeper.

Pro tip, turn on air compressor before You screon on him to valve, it helps clean out valve and prevent air in tire from making start harder to compressor. It will last longer.

Great video. I can't help but think that ATB is not working to its fullest due to using a synthetic fluid which is too slippery as those diffs rely on gear to gear friction to split the torque. And if it's too slippery it allows it to free spin too easily. Which is why I would recommend trying a patrolum gear oil with no friction modifier which is what I run in my rig. Keep up the great work!!
@tfrasca142
@tfrasca142 6 месяцев назад
This is a good point. I want to change the fluid one more time as part of the break in process, so I’ll try non-synthetic. Thanks!

Which badland winch and bumper are you using and did you have to cut your grill? I've got a d2 I'd like to upgrade but don't want to chop my grill. Thanks and great vid 👍
@tfrasca142
@tfrasca142 6 месяцев назад
Thanks. It's the newer ZXR 12,000 winch, and a Britpart D2 bumper. With that bumper, you'd definitely need to cut the grill. Pretty sure you'd need something like an ARB bumper to avoid cutting anything.

I need to get my videos going so bad! They are all just little cell phone Clips even though I go on really long awesome Trails doing a lot of cool things. I love your camera angles what do you use a gopro? Also I'm wondering what type of e-locker do you have??? I want to get one but I don't want to pay someone else to set up the Lash on the ring gear because I don't know how to do the Shams and measure it all right because I don't know what it's supposed to be at it's hard to find the info

I have a couple videos about the locker and how I set up the gears. The method I used seems to have worked for me. And the locker is a Terrafirma TF 450. I love it.

Hmmm are those springs heavy duty or medium duty? I like medium duty, I find if they are "in the springs" it rides better and the articulation is superior and flexes more so my tires stay on the ground and the springs are always trying to push the vehicle up and the tire down. Also when you are wheeling up the hill at the end, what gear are you using? My experience with the atb diffs front and rear is that they tend to work in an interesting way. They power from side to side when moving, such as deep sand or snow. but they do not function directly as a locker obviously. I find if I have forward movement they work excellent. You can feel them working. They are not lockers, and fall short if I unload a wheel I can have what you experienced. But my cv joints are less stressed overall. The potential to break the CV joints is very high in a locked heavy power applied situation, even more so with low gearing you have. I think you had all four spinning as it slid to the right, as locked or posi diffs do. They are not lockers of course. I think if you want to find ways for them to not act like a locker than you will be able to do so. When you become more accustomed to them your experience will/may be different. You may find you need the lockers or you want them, that's fine of course. Give me the GPS coordinates of that hill. I will take a try at it with my Range Rover next time I am in Oregon. I think your disco will be better overall, as My Range Rover has the longer wheel base..Final thought what PSI were you when aired down? it did not seem like they were aired down much
@tfrasca142
@tfrasca142 6 месяцев назад
All good points. For reference, I was aired down to 15 psi, and I was in low range 2nd gear (automatic) on the hill. I even tried some left foot braking to try to get that front right to engage, but had no luck.
@johnkemple
@johnkemple 6 месяцев назад
@@tfrasca142 Thank you for the reply. Not trying to have any issues with you at all. I like disco's, and believe they are better than LWB rovers in a lot of, but mostly extreme situations. 15psi seems pretty good!, your tires are pretty stiff. I use 3rd low range, same thing really in that situation one thing is that gravel is pretty loose.. You have done a great job so far as i have followed your progress. Hard to left foot brake in those conditions. I also elected to do the +2 inch shocks to get more articulation. though that required spring catchers as the rear springs will pop out at the top. So my configuration is 2 inch lift, +2 shocks on medium duty springs. Lt230 with Ashcroft t-case Atb. and ATB's at both ends. your ATB's will work even better in a couple years,..Take care happy trails...oh yeah.. I like your videos, they are great to watch and have good editing and sound
@tfrasca142
@tfrasca142 6 месяцев назад
@@johnkemple Thanks, I appreciate that. I'll definitely let the ATB break in a bit more, and learn how it works and doesn't work before I form a real opinion about it. I do like how it'll be relatively easy on front axles and CVs. Your RR sounds pretty similar to mine. I have a 3" lift, +2" shocks, rear spring retainers, and no sway bars.
@johnkemple
@johnkemple 6 месяцев назад
@@tfrasca142 I wanted to do the 3 inch lift but decided I would keep as low a center of gravity as possible, and sacrifice a bit of rock crawling capability. I have one of those level / tilt gauges and have been to 40 degrees side tilt . Which is about as much as I care to be doing. I kept the sway bars on, just have not made the quick disconnect. If I was going offroad for a week I would just disconnect them. Where I live off road places I enjoy are hours away, and I pull a small camper trailer so sway bars make me feel more comfortable on the highways. My time spent figuring out the Range Rover's capabilities was extensive. I tried heavy duty springs and took them off after only one test thru a ditch at an angle. Since I always used the same ditch for testing, it was obvious that the medium duty spring was the same height and the front tire would stay in contact with the bottom of the ditch, where the heavy duty springs that tire was a couple inches off the ground. Maybe with a car load of people and a lot of gear it would have touched, as the spring would have been compressed some to start with. I also use a heavy duty adjustable rear radius arms to correct the rear diff pinion angle that was changed even with only a 2 inch lift. I run Tom Woods drive shafts with double cardan joints front and rear shafts, both have heavy duty splines. Tom Woods shop is awesome. When I changed to the Lt230 t-case and found it was longer than the borg warner. so my brand new driveshaft was too long. I sent it back and he returned it the next day. shortened and rebalanced for $60.00.. I might get some footage with my drone and post a few videos myself, now that the new drone can track me so I can be hands free and do it by myself..Well one day I will make it back up there to Oregon. Maybe we can hit a trail or two.
