If we are going to tell the story of medicine, we had better start at the beginning, which means we need to go all the way back to the start of recorded history. Ever since we've been writing things down, we've been documenting our attempts at treating illness. Pretty much all of the techniques we employed millennia ago are laughable by today's standards, but in a pre-scientific society, superstitions held sway. Let's take a look at some of the figures who are able to make the first significant strides towards legitimate medicine.

And in one quick swoop the Greek origins are combined with Latinized names. The way the Romans took over from the Greek is how modern medicine became the dread of those learning Latin and old-Greek, mixing and mashing words without any respect for grammar or origins. Even outside of the field, names like Homeros are practically always designated by the Latinized "Homerus". "Theseus" is fine, as long as you don't split it into "These-us". Apart from that, great video!

Hermes was syncretized with Mercury and Djehuty/Thoth considered the god of medicine and herbs/drugs and Asclepius was the student if Hermes and the syncretization Hermes Trismagestus. This syncretization is not modern. This is why generally doctors use the Caduceus and paramedics/nurses use the Rod of Asclepius.

But as far as science goes he has literally taught in college.

I just thought while looking at the Materia Medica, that maybe THAT is what the Voyanich manuscript was actually supposed to be. I think it is just the pictures of the plants. But now that we are getting it translated or so I hear that should be up to the test.
@whatabouttheearth
@whatabouttheearth 11 месяцев назад
The Voyanich Manuscript probably is a sort of alchemical materia medica judging by the images. Many times such things were also kept secret because of the overlap with the so called "occult" and the making of drugs, poisons, abortifacients and hallucinagens, sometimes used as entheogens. These were not liked by the church.

Western pharmacology surpassed traditional eastern medicines such as Ayurveda and Chinese Traditional Medicine, largely due to the academic interpollination of all the cultures of the Middle East, Ancient, Egypt, Greece and Rome. This is about the development of pharmacology which expanded past western herbal tradition when the easy was still holding onto herbal cures.
