We just learned about medicine in the Middle Ages, and the time period that follows is called the Renaissance. What advancements were made during this time? The most important figure in this period of medicine went by the name of Paracelsus, so how exactly did he contribute to this field? It turns out he was quite the polarizing figure, so let's take a look!

It's hard to blame Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim for wanting to invent a new name for himself.

I DO blame him! When your name is literally Theophrastus Bombastus, let alone von Hohenheim, you HAVE to make everyone call you that, on principle. "Order for mr. THEOPHRASTUS BOMBASTUS!" What would you like with your vodka, herr Bombastus Hoh-henherrheimhm, come on it is so good!1!!!!

The Best anime I have ever seen. Abstract: "Alchemy is the science of understanding, decomposition and reconstruction of matter. However, It Is not an omnipotent art, it Is impossible to create from nothing; to obtain something, something of equal value most be offered in exchange. This equivalent exchange Is the fundation of alchemy. But there is a taboo, human transmutation and no Alchemist should incur It". But of course, our protagonists do It.

TB is not completely treatable. Advanced stages are often fatal and the Extensively drug-resistant TBs are really difficult to treat and often lead to death even if treatment is followed A lot of progress has been made but the disease is showing increasing rates of resistance to treatment that can be problematic in the future. It is a lot better than it was in the renaissance

It's mainly in undeveloped areas where it is still a problem, but don't worry we will get to antibiotics and antibiotic resistance later in the series!
@OrionNebulous
@OrionNebulous 3 года назад
@@ProfessorDaveExplains I would argue against the undeveloped areas concept here, I have seen the resistant strains in patients from middle to upper middle class. My country isn't the most developed but we do have an excellent medical education at the university level and treatment for TB is free, often times delivered directly to the patients home or those with the extensively drug resistant strains are often admitted into TB hospitals. TB itself is an opportunistic bacteria which often infect those with diminished immune systems such as people suffering from HIV or who have other health concerns such as Asthma. A better statement would be that resistant TB is more common in areas with high incidences of immunosuppressive disease and low incidences of patient education. 11:45 Dead from grief was a code word for suicide in some societies, as people who killed themselves were usually not allowed to be buried in consecrated ground, excommunicated post-mortem, had their inheritance "nationalized", or worse. Also, censorship. If you read Chinese literature, you have a disgraced general often receive a letter from his superiors that made him die from grief... yeah right, a grieved blade to the neck, more likely... It's weird how Americans are unable to comprehend figures of speech. Example, "Cancer and Wolf" as cause of death on same book doesn't mean literally choked by a big lobster and a wolfy, those are illnesses CALLED a crab (cancer) and wolf (lupus). Similarly, planet was a code for something that would not be named otherwise. Like a heart attack? Edit: you do name Consumption and Rising of the Lights as TB and Croup. Though I've read the latter might be asthma, pneumonia, and emphysema. You never know the local slang of the era. That's why our meme jokes will be gibberish to internet archaeologists. :p P.S. Most deaths were from lack of vaccines and/or antibiotics. Horrible what anti-vaxxers want to bring us to! Near 50% infant mortality rate was still there in East Europe when my grandmother was young, some of her children died little without explanation too. The dumbest thing that people knew how antibiotics worked since Ancient Egypt, the women who owned breweries made molded bread into medicine... I read that in India, and some other ancient countries people also figured that out. And then 2000 years of dark ages. =(

Why didn't you mention that Paracelsus was also an astrologer and talked about astrology often? In his texts; He says that astrology is the first building block to be learned for those who practice this science. He also talks about the effect of astrological measurements and calculations on the human body and its relationship with medicines. Astrology was very important for him and he was practicing it constantly. Also about name of diseases... Even the fact that smallpox was known at the level to be named is a miracle if we consider the period of that time. Catching and listing similar recurring symptoms and naming them tentatively, listing them, is ingenious for the period in terms of discrimination. I wonder how common statistics was at that time? I understand it may sound funny in 21st sentury, but this is where he wasnt live? :) well... I maybe quite obsessed about some ancient figures :) Thats a nice shortcut for him for sure! Thanks!

Several sources say his father was a physician albeit an unsuccessful one during his early days leading him to teach medicine then finally become successful as an occupational physician. No rumors question his father’s credentials as he did not have the enemies of his son who had the love of the common folk or non “high-asses” as he used to say about college graduates who were largely elites re: socioeconomically. Today they would be considered intellectual or cerebral narcissists. Impressively one electronic source says his mother was the superintendent of a hospital which one can surely ADMIRE such accomplishment especially for a female during that time frame.

Just a detail, no big deal, but because you start with that, the correct translation of "para" is "against". ex: parachute, parasol, meaning "against fall", "against the sun" it's Latin borrowed from Greek. So, his pseudo is "against doctor" meaning that you don't need to see one if you read his book. The Renaissance may have been a wonderful period of cultural renewal, but it also showed a huge increase in witch trials. 60,000 people, mostly women, were burned to death. This was also the period Spain colonized Central and South America, with devastating consequences for the locals. BTW, there was nothing "heretical" about Copernican astronomy.
@scienceexplains302
@scienceexplains302 3 года назад
Barton Paul Levenson Maybe not at the time, but in 1615, the Roman Inquisition declared heliocentrism heretical. Copernicus effectively showed that the sense of Genesis 1:9-19, with the sun in the (the land’s) sky and the waters above the sky, was not accurate.

Unfortunately there's been genocide at literally every point of human history, even the 20th century, and arguably even today. And the Catholic Church fought heliocentrism for centuries. @@ProfessorDaveExplains Biblical literalism had a lot to do with it, but man being at the center of the universe did not. Earth in midieval astronomy was at the lowest point in the universe, second only to Hell. It was not a position of respect. The idea that Christianity places man at the center of the universe is completely, utterly wrong. It places God at the center.

I just don't know what you're referring to. It says that earth is unmoving, and everything else goes around it. I would call that the center of everything.

@@ProfessorDaveExplains There's a widespread idea that Christianity puts man at the center and various (allegedly) Christian beliefs are to maintain pride in humanity. It totally misreads Christianity.
