I think Paula sees it as being friends in the future, predetermined by fate. Despite not knowing us, she knows we can be trusted, hence a friend we've never meant.

My GRandmother used to say "There is no such thing as strangers, only friends you haven't made yet." So it is kinda what Paula was thinking.

about paula saying ness and jeff are friends we have never met before: I think it's likely that, because paula is psychic, she's referring to them being friends in the future? since psychic in the real world sense can often mean seeing/sensing the future (ex fortune tellers and the like) I haven't ever played earthbound myself however, so I have no idea if later interactions debunk this. just wanted to put it out there as a possibility!

When I played up to this part the first time, I got stuck on what to do after you lay down the Zombie Paper in the circus tent. I actually went to the hint guy in town to figure out the next step, and he said something along the lines of "You've been working too hard. Why not take a rest at the hotel." At first I thought it was another "funny" moment and I wasted $60, but low and behold I realised he was right when I needed to go to a hotel to heal up and I saw the cutscene play out.

I feel like whenever Jeff fixes something broken when you go to sleep in the hotel, he pulls an all-nighter working on fixing it. That's why it's random and he can't fix something every night you go to sleep.

Seriously though i found the whole “youre a friend ive never met” thing amazing. It tied their destinys together while also having the warm fuzzy “dawwww” feeling and also it demonstrated some of Paula’s unprecedented psychic ability, for her to not only tell the future but to be able to call from that far away. In a way its foreshadowing of how she prays for everyone’s help jn the end, even breaking the barrier between player and game (narratively).

When fighting handsome toms and smiling sals, I like to imagine that psi fire is good against them because you are burning the puppet strings.

Hey Chugga, I know this is cheesy as hell but I wanted to really thank you for these videos. I've been going through some frustrating, really bad stuff for the last month or so and these video have really helped me through it. Even though I'm still going through it I can still be glad that once 5 pm passes I can check in here and be entertained so much. It also helps to go through your old videos and relive some better times by binging them. You're seriously an amazing content creator and have been a ray of sunshine in my life for nearly 9 years now. I'm very thankful for all you've done and I'm always excited to see what you'll do next. This Let's Play is so great too because it reminds me of one of my favorite playthroughs I've ever seen you do. Keep on keeping on. I'll always be here to watch what you put out.

The game actually does give you a hint after placing the Zombie Paper. The NPCs in the tent will actually tell you to go get some rest and say something about how it'll be a big mess in the morning.

A friend you've never met before is someone that'd undoubtedly be your friend once you actually meet. It's like your house you haven't built yet. It's not your house because it hasn't been built, but the minute it is built it is immediately your house. The same thing applies to a friend you haven't met yet, especially in Paula's mind I'm sure.

All of this seems so cryptic at first. I can't remember for the life of me how I got through this part.

I mentioned this in a previous video, but every level-up that is a multiple of 4 will have substantially larger stat gains than the other normal level-ups.

Paula is that one friend who's way too clingy. We. Will. Be. Friends. We've just never met before and have completely different personalities.

Actually I read in a guide from an even bigger fan of Earthbound than you and I believe its based off speed relative to the enemy. Hence why faster bosses later on dodge bottle rockets. Unless I'm thinking of a different item Jeff uses but I'm pretty sure its the bottle rockets and big bottle rockets.

Your OG LP of Earthbound was the first video series I ever watched on RU-vid. This playthrough is giving me some serious nostalgia 😭❤

I also want to add that Jeff speed can indirectly affect damage output from bottle rockets (especially Big and Multi-bottle rockets) as in the more speed you have, the rockets will hit their target resulting in more damage. This is a important info as he can can OHKO bosses in this game if his speed is high enough. I ended up replaying Earthbound thanks to this playthrough inspiring me. I actually decided to go away from defaults, and named all the mario characters after Mario stuff (ness is mario, Paula is peach, Jeff is Luigi, Poo is Yoshi, king is Toad, favorite food is pasta, and favorite thing is gaming). I think I actually unintentionally replicated a Japanese naming option with a small number of changes. So far, it led to "I'm giving toad a flea bath"

Boogie Tent is a pretty cool boss. The fact that you're fighting the background is amazing!

bottle rocket damage is based on jeff's speed, but i only heard you mention luck! it's definitely important to stack jeff's speed stat

The most terrifying part of being possessed is when the ghost gets a Smash attack. That gave me some trouble....good thing it's rare

Whenever I see the Escargo Express/Mach Pizza employee come to Threed from the direction of Twoson I always wonder how they get past the tunnel filled with ghosts.

So I was playing earthbound which I just downloaded (because chugga inspired me to play it) I had the best beginner’s luck ever! Basically, I got 2 smash attacks in a row and 2 shot Frankenstein mark II!

hey Emile to answer your question on "friend we've never met" thing.. isn't Paula a fortune teller? she's able to forsee coming events and probably sees herself with all of the crew and already considers them friends despite having never met yet. side note.. Paula probably already knows everything that's going to happen and just allows it to happen because Ness needs to go on the journey to feel strong enough to face said journey.

I made a comment a few days ago about this being a title for a Threed video. AWSOME

Playing along side you, chugga! (Though I’ve played far past you as of now.. so taking a break until then.) But I’ve never seen the possession status effect until just a couple of days ago and started yelling at you about it lol. “What do I gotta do to get rid of this?! Do an exorcism!?”

And you thought I was kidding about burning down a tent full of zombies in episode 14!

I just did this section before watching the video. The game does provide hints through a couple NPCs. I talked to a person in town who mentioned that a second tent was built in the southern part of town before I found the hint itself. And in the circus tent, the woman mentions that she can't wait until tomorrow morning for all the zombies to be stuck to the floor, indicating that you have to sleep at the hotel.

A pretty fond memory i have of the boogie tent is on my first play through I hadn’t gotten a game over yet. I was really beaten to hell and when I stumbled upon the boogie tent, I wasn’t expecting it and didn’t know it was a boss fight and I ended up losing and getting my first game over. But because how the game over continue screen looks with the light shining down on you, I thought the boogie tent ate ness.

Funny story about the lil ghost. Jeff was possessed and Ness was mashroomized (don't know why I didn't get either fixed), and we were in a fight. As I was bashing my way out, Ness decided now was a good time to get confused. So, who does he hit? He hits the ghost, which kills it. Ness cured Jeff by swinging his bat around like a maniac. Note: details not exact as this was a while ago (like is it possible to get mashroomized close to Threed?). Also currently doing a 1/128 run, but I can't even get a pizza.

Battling a sentient tent reminds me of how in Final Fantasy games so bosses are just objects that have become possessed In Final Fantasy 4 you have the Demon Wall which is more of a panic boss then an actual boss since its slowly moving towards you In Final Fantasy 6 its the Demon Train.

Those mini ghosts are like a unique DOT thats not poison or bleed but its random who it does the DOT on. This game is just built different

Huh, I never really thought about how the mother games do sort of need to adjust the usual text for female party members The boogie tent, outside of the music, is one of the first really terrifying moments in the game for me honestly, given it's like a low key jumpscare.
