Yes, many of the current meat industry's practices are immoral, but eating meat in and of itself is not immoral. What's immoral is telling people who need to consume animal products to survive that doing so is immoral. You have no conscience, and until this very real issue is addressed in a viable way, all you're doing is spewing self-righteous BS.
@@grapevinegoddess ... hey, good luck with your RELIGION. I'd say the same if you were a Scientologist or Mormon or whatever. Believe what you want to believe... Veganism, scientifically, has a much going for it as Scientology or Mormonism or the belief in little green men. But NONE are based on science; they all are completely based on a non-scientific (false) system of 100% pure faith-based belief... Go for it!
I raised beef cattle for 20 years. I had to suppress my compassion and do moral acrobatics to justify it. I am not knocking others for doing so but for me I finally could not ignore the cruelty I played a part in. Recently I decided to embrace compassion and no longer participate in the practice. I sold all of the livestock and have moved to a primarily plant based diet.
@@nevinkuser9892irrelevant, all the same. Calves taken from mother at birth, continually artificially impregnated, until no use after 5 ish years, then killed. Injected hormones. No life for a cow being In a pregnant state for their whole life, just to get milk to sell for humans to drink, when there is so many options.
Thanks to everyone becoming vegan. I'm so proud and thankful of you guys. I understand that it will always be a minority position but it really is pushing the meat prices down. As long as farms are incentivised enough and keep existing, you have my gratitude. I will keep supporting the vegan cause as a meat eater.
@ Jack Daw Based on how Supply and Demand works, I don't think the meat prices are going down, but less and less animals are being slaughtered though. I'm seeing the aisles on the vegan shelves in grocery stores being half empty every time I visit which means more and more vegan products are going to be ordered by the stores overtime while less meat is being produced.
@@andrewmccool5923 yeah the 0.6% in my country is the reason why prices are the way they are... Those darn vegans... Not like people don't have the capital or will to farm. Nah.. they know... Vegans are taking over. Stand strong my vegan brethren.
@@jackdaw6359 At 0.6% there probably wouldn't be a noticeable shift in the prices, especially given how significantly meat is subsidized I'm just pointing out that what you said in your original comment is the opposite of what would actually happen as the percentage of vegans increase over time
I startd the vegan diet after reading Becoming Ultra, which is phenomenal book. I was 21 at the time, and was working out, skiing, surfing, and running pretty often. I’m 5’11 and a lean 155lbs. I dropped to 142, lost almost all muscle mass and felt bloated all the time. i now eat a strict diet that mostly consists of steak, eggs, fish and chicken and feel 10x better. the vegan diet is great for those it works for, but people need to do what’s best for THEIR bodies. i love rich roll and everything he does, but i’m tired of the 22 year old vegan girls shoving their propaganda down my throat while simultaneously eating vegan taco bell😂😅 much love🌈
Thank you for this interview with Ed. Ed is always so respectful and eloquent. I love how he explains that one's emotions and frustration are self-serving. I find it so hard talking about veganism to people and listening to other people's arguments for eating meat etc. It makes me very emotional - mainly sad, but also angry. This is why I don't initiate conversations about veganism - and I try to keep conversations about veganism very short. When people ask me why I'm vegan, I say for the animals. The benefits to the environment and my health are a bonus. I need to watch more of Ed's conversations and learn how to be a better advocate for veganism.
YAY! Being vegan for ten years now, and a personal trainer, athlete and former professional dancer, and an animal rights activist, this makes me so happy. Thanks so much Rich for having Ed on and talking frankly about veganism, not just “plant based” living.
Yep! I'm 69. VEGAN 2.5 yes, and WFPB past 18 months. Startling health improvements after going WFPB: lowered cholesterol 50 pts, lost 55 lbs. START TODAY. I WORK IN HOSPICE, and see lifetime effects of what diet does to the body.
This is just vegan nirvana. Two such positive, well-spoken, intelligent voices for a great cause. Makes me feel a bit depressed that I’m a 20-year vegan but still not confident in my ability to spread the word. Thanks guys.
I relate!! I know this is an older comment but I was reading through this and I've also struggled with lack of confidence when it comes time to step up to the plate and make the morally correct argument for veganism. The more I listen to educators like Ed and other activists the more I retain. It's still taking some time but it's helping.
Catboy I keep it to myself unless anyone asks. I'm eloquent (former actress and teacher, show off and knowledgeable) however don't have the energy for dysfunction and emotional justification. On paper I totally look like a vocal activist. Nah. Good to know your limits and remember whatever you do is helping. Stay true to you.
It will come naturally. I find it easier to ask questions more than feeling like I have to present anything. Everyone deep down has a moral blueprint that says veganism is right. Just letting them find that themselves. Listen to enough conversations of humane hancock and ed earthling and you'll carry enough with you. There's only a handful of reasons you'll run into most of the time. convenience, taste, habit, culture, etc, so it becomes more second-nature overtime to ask the right Q's. Should do your absolute best to speak in a way that they don't become defensive, conversation is as good as over at that point, and may even strengthen their feelings towards meat-eating. Just relaxed, questioning, sharing your true experience and thoughts in the simplest way possible.
@@LaSorciereFeuillue and your comment is 2 months old and I'm seeing it LOL. I just went vegan at 66, I feel like you do, I was going to tell cat-boy to purchase The Elements of Style, then let it all out in black and white! Thanks for being a teacher.
Hi there, If you do not mind me sharing; abstinence (self-control), exercise, fresh air, nutrition, rest, trust in GOD and water are the laws of health, which if adhered to, will help one live longer. Touching on nutrition, i would recommend opting for an organic, well-planned, unrefined and untempered with vegan diet (preferably consuming fruits, nuts and vegetables in their raw form so as not to denature or destroy the life-forces and enzymatic activities) consisting of organic fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole-grains which provides mankind with ultimate health and longevity, i believe, based on experience too. If 'properly planned', it provides the system with the required calcium, carbohydrates, essential vitamins, fats, fibre, minerals, protein and water required to make good blood and enjoy health. Moreover, i would also recommend to consume colloidal silver (avoid consuming too much according to gathered information) or colloidal gold if one can (avoiding purchasing from other countries as it may deplete in quality during transportation based on gathered information too). If you are one that grows indoor plants or would like to, i would recommend to opt for organic, vegan and peat-free compost, as well as the use of organic liquid feed that does not contain sea weed due to radiation in the seas, i believe. You have quite the archaic understanding of modern zoos. If you truly love animals and the planet you should support the work of your local zoos. Modern zoos main goal is species conservation, rescue, and breeding endangered animals to increase the gene pool and save animals from extinction. The animals in zoos are not plucked from the wild for us to look at. They are usually rescued, or saved from private collections. The only time an animal is ever taken from the wild is if it is needed for genetic diversity to save the species from extinction, and even then it is rarely done, because wild born animals do not adapt to zoo life. Then there is the major role they play in education and awareness raising, and real fund raising for conservation. A lot more goes on behind the scenes than you realise.
@@themudpit621 why is extinction such a bad thing? It's actually only a concept that humans can comprehend, what should matter is the experience of the individuals.
Big fan of Ed. The issue I see with peers that deter them from embracing veganism, is the idea that they don’t make choices based on right and wrong, but what is currently socially justifiable. And it feels as if there is no hope in convincing some one to switch a diet, when they fundamentally allow social standards to dictate their morality.
Maybe the answer is to not bother trying to convince anyone of anything. Maybe just attempt to plant some seeds, and then move on. Whether those seeds sprout is entirely up to the individual themselves. But I totally agree with everything else you said:)
Became vegan at 56 , almost 11 years ago, activist for several now. Ed has always been an inspiration. I frequently listen to him on the way to activism events to get in the right mindset. Great interview. Valuable reset too. His book is excellent! Recommend 🌱💪

Thanks for sharing your experience. I agree that some people have no empathy for vulnerable beings. We see the trolls on vegan channels seemingly proud to be apathetic, which in my opinion shows a very dark emotional state. It’s pretty sad that some people go through life with no interest in helping the innocent.

@Bladerunner2043 10 years of plant based vegan lifestyle and my triglycerides level is low, as are other lipid levels. No eczema and I started loosing my hair way before I became a vegan. My low hdl level is due to my low ldl level. At the habitat for humanity where I volunteer, I can perform the physical work all day long without a need for lunch, whereas my omnivore colleagues wander about what to have for lunch an hour before lunchtime.
@Bladerunner2043 I am never hungry outside of the two meals I have everyday. Due to the concept of calorie density, I have never done portion control and it has served me well. Count your blessings that, for some event in the universe, you were born a human being instead of seeing yourself on receiving end of a saw blade through your neck. Any concerns about the environment?
@Bladerunner2043 Gorillas are much bigger than humans so, of course, they will have bigger digestive tract than us. However, human’s digestive tract is much larger than a carnivore’s of comparison size. Like herbivores, human beings naturally produce amylase, the enzyme needed to break down and digest carbohydrates. The rapid development of brain development was due to bioavailability of nutrients from plants as well as the meat after the humans learned to cook.
Two of my heroes together. I hope to meet you both and strengthen my voice to add to the conversation. I've started a book club with three friends who've all gone vegan throughout the span of our friendship, most recently, my vegetarian friend who finally answered her moral question in the first two chapters of your book, Ed. You speak about the difficulty of a child to in effect challenge parents by going vegan. For me, it was the opposite; when I went vegan I had two boys, 14 and 18, and a spouse. The youngest one became vegan at 21, the older one eats little meat and is vegan-accepting but has not taken the final steps, and the spouse is now an ex who is closed minded and impervious. Excited to watch this one. I've been looking forward to a more vegan-centered episode again. I get that the topic can get stale (especially when you've been at it as long as Rich) but I'm really happy this one happened. :)
I think Rich has also become vegan for morality and sustainability after initially beiing for health and well-being. He's had James Aspey on and even Ingrid Newkirk from PETA. But I still agree. Such a great combo

I became vegan over 4 years ago and met Ed almost immediately after. His calm but persistent demeanor has kept me engaged in the struggle with the misinterpretations of what being vegan means and the environmental concerns regarding animal agriculture. Animal welfare is so much more important to me than it ever was and I have Ed to thank.
I became a vegan for moral reasons but ended up curing my type 2 diabetes. My hba1c (a blood test that measures your average blood sugars over the past three months) is 5.1 which is absolutely normal, without any diabetic medication. So considering I can do the right thing by living creatures and also become much healthier there are only benefit upon benefit for veganism. I haven’t even touched on the environmental benefit. Love benefits everyone and everything especially yourself.
@@davidlynch9049 I think most of us had terrible diets because that's what our parents raised us up with. Its not our fault that we didn't know better as children because that is all we knew at the time. The biggest influencers in our lives are our parents during the early years when it comes to religion, way of living, and etc. Once we learn about different views, its when we have the potential to make better choices. When we 100% know and understand that we've been taught the wrong things and make a change to fix them, we shouldn't regret it and start living a better life.
I became vegan first to reverse my diabetes and fatty liver,, which I have done (5 months vegan). My main reason now through education is for moral and for the animals. ED is now my mentor
I bought and began reading Vegan Propaganda (Kindle), while watching this interview in segments over a couple of days. It is extremely well expressed, with lots of relevant detail. Read it, and you will have your guns loaded for discussions, for confrontations.

Regarding regenerative farming - does the equation change much if it goes along with the need for people to eat far less "protein" (from pasture raised animals), and more plants? I grew up in a grain farming family in the midwest - and see first hand just how broken the system is. All the farmground in the mid-west is seemingly used to grow useless crops that are killing society - high fructose corn syrup, genetically modified wheat, soybean oil - white corn for more doritos... it's all so sad. The narrative that I heard growing up is that the farmers in the mid-west feed the world, but in reality - we have ruined the health of people that will take generations to undo.
Thanks for your input Sarah. From the studies earthling Ed often resorts to, it’s something like 73% of farmland is used for livestock feed and for livestock. Over half of crops grown are fed to animals, so those industries can fatten their wallets while exploiting these innocent animals, as well as exploiting communities and even their customers getting sick from too much animal products. I agree the system is so flawed. The soil is basically “dead”, so they use chemical nitrogen fertilizers to make crops grow. There’s a great documentary on Netflix called Kiss the Ground about how tilling the earth is ruining the soil and releasing large amounts of carbon.
@@caliskaterboy626 agree on "Kiss the Ground" documentary on Netflix. These guys should have a conversation with the Kiss the Ground farmers & scientists on better solutions regardless of diet.
I’d be fascinated to hear more about how Ed feels on a day to day basis. I was especially engaged hearing him say his family is not vegan even after years of him advocating on a large scale. I wonder how frustrating that is. That’s become very challenging for me, seeing no change among family and friends after years of being the “good” vegan
And why should his family go vegan? If my became a born again cristian, or a flat earther or any other sort of protagonist I would not expected to turn my family just because there family and vice versa. I wouldn't imagine your family are literally trying to shove chicken legs down your throat so maybe just back off.
@@utube1818 back off of who and what? Not sure why your comment was so emotional, and neither I nor Ed are shoving anything down anyone's throat either, so not sure your point. But I asked the question because it's his life's work dedicated to saving animals from suffering and advocating for veganism, and yet those (possibly) closest to him still don't do what he's advocating for on a large scale. I wonder how that affects him. And it's different than being a flat earther because whether you think the earth is flat doesn't stem from your values and doesn't affect anyone. Ed has passionate values and sees animals being eaten as causing suffering, so others' lives are at stake. But many born again christians do try to get others to see things the way they do too. It's normal
It is one thing to examine your own priorities and behaviors and to take satisfaction from living in harmony with your morals. It is another entirely to base your own happiness on your ability to change the priorities and behaviors of others! It is wonderful to be a resource to other people but you can’t choose who will want to listen and learn. It seems that Ed has clearly got this in mind and hopefully is happy with the impact he has had and motivated by what good he can do each day.

This is a wonderfully thoughtful, balanced interview, an intelligent discussion of important topics - thanks to both of you for the inspirational work you each do, Rich and Ed!
Mass corporations are happy they have a guy marketing for them for free...soon enough you can get your ration of factory made vegan food and ban of people who speak out against that...
The instant the topic of veganism comes up, people whose diets comprise of donuts, cheeseburgers and mountain dew will suddenly become nutrition experts who have a friend of a friend who nearly died on a vegan diet.
They also only get animal products from their local farm owned by their kind old uncle who gives all the animals a long happy life of rolling hills and daily massages. Just lies we tell ourselves to alleviate the guilt associated with supporting clear and unnecessary animal harm. "We have to eat animals", "it's too expensive not too", "it's unhealthy not to eat animals", "the animals have long and happy lives". None of it is true but too many seems to fall back on these "justifications". The real reason people eat animals is that they like the taste, they are used to the habit, or they are scared of not conforming socially. Very weak rationalisations.
Answer this. Why do people who claim to practice "veganism" use animal products needlessly for entertainment? My theory is they derive more worth from the claim than the actual practice. "Veganism" debunks itself by the fact no one actually wants to practice it, they just want others to believe they do.
Earthling Ed, you are so amazing. Thank you for all you do. I went vegan nearly 2 years ago after being Vegetarian for 30 years. I had never really thought about or looked into the dairy industry, which seems incredibly naive, now. I try to give people grace because of this, because I might be speaking with someone who, unbeknownst to them, will eventually become vegan, even if they roll their eyes at it right now. That used to be me. I changed. Change happens. But there is also the recognition that, contrary to what Ed says (and I wish were true), not everybody wants to create a better world. Not everybody cares about animals as beings who suffer. Not everybody has empathy. There is an alarming section of the population who could not care less and who rejoice in cruelty for cruelty's sake. There was an episode on Impractical Jokers where one of the jokers (I believe it was Murr), was posing as a waiter at a restaurant. He says the special of the day is (something to the effect of) lambs who experienced extra suffering and torture. Guess what they ordered? The lamb with extra suffering. Sick. So, yeah, unfortunately, some people will just never give a shit. Our society is truly sick.
Veg 48 years, vegan 31 & my whole family joined over decade ago, also most of my friends & even clients now. There is no way around it - we need to evolve & as long as we hurt other earthlings humanity will not thrive or be healthy or happy.
Thanks for having Ed on the podcast. He's been a huge inspiration to so many of us out there. Because of Ed, I want to get more involved with animal rights activism! Our behaviors in regards to animals are destructive to everything we humans claim to care about.
Ed is one of a kind. He is so amazing for the vegan movement and educating the people who will listen. (Also, his comebacks have helped me win loads of arguments lol)

“Nothing we do lacks a certain kind of downstream impact” is so true. That is why as humans we have the intellect for conscious choice. I am close to being a vegetarian still eating the occasional meal of fowl and fish but moving to a lesser amount more often. I have wondered if I could give up my sparingly consumption, as well as diary and eggs, which is why I am here to listen to this podcast. I tend to buy organic products including diary and free range egg production but I do know that there is an impact toward “others” even in these choices. A wonderful and enlightening conversation with these two men and the issues they discussed for all of us to consider. I had no idea of what those arguments were in greater depth such as regenerative practices. We do convince ourselves in our positions, don’t we?
Thanks for being open minded. Can I recommend watching Ed's documentary 'Land of Hope and Glory'? There's also Milked (a new one about the dairy industry in New Zealand), Cowspiracy (which covers all areas), Dominion (covers all areas but mostly in Australia), and Seaspiracy (covers fishing). I strongly suspect that afterwards you will find the motivation to cut the last few bits out! Dairy in particular is a horribly cruel and violent industry, and dairy is terrible for our health - for women it can cause much higher risk of breast cancer, and of colon cancer for men, as well as correlating with higher risk of heart disease. When we can just buy oat milk or almond milk, or get grated vegan cheese (which I promise can be really good!) or vegan yoghurt, why not watch a few documentaries and give it a go for a month, see how you get on?
For me I had to just jump in and do it to know that I could do it. I recommend giving it a go for a month and see how you feel. It's a lot less daunting when you take it in bite sized chunks.
@@swarming1092 Thanks for the documentary suggestions. I’ll see if I can locate them and am interested in what you’ve had to say. I decided to cut out dairy. I appreciate you taking time to write a response and saw I had notifications, so thanks again. It’s nice to see other people caring about the vegan way.
i wish i could speak with an iota of the composure, confidence, intelligence, stature and focus that Ed exhibits here. what a talented intellect and orator, who brings such a logical though-process to a topic, similarly to politics, religion, etc, that can often become difficult to discuss without emotions taking over and convoluting the facts and messaging.

@@wobblybobengland It depends on many factors like what type of meat, how frequently it is consumed and in what amounts... etc. It is too simplistic to say that eating any meat causes cancer, and we do not have any such evidence for you to be saying that. You're also conveniently ignoring the fact that as I keep needing to repeat to you, not everyone can be vegan. Being vegan poses a health threat/medical problem for some, and I count myself among those people because I LIVED THROUGH IT. You didn't.. so how about you show a little conscience and respect. The Dalai Lama counts himself among those, too, as he must eat meat for the same medical reasons. If you want to talk about medical health issues you need to be prepared to talk about ALL of them, not just the incidents of cancer related to too much red meat consumption. And if you're going to try to present this world with a viable solution, it will need to include the arrangements necessary for those who must eat meat... including the fact that toxic-minded vegans need to stop vilifying those who need meat in their diet.
This talk was excellent, ther was no mention of dangerous herbicides as I am concerned about Roundup( glyphosate) used on vegetables, Wheat and fruits, known to be bad for human health as well as anti nutrients found in plants and fruits. Thanks for another interesting podcast! I have never heard of Ed before. Does he talk about (in his book) the history of agriculture, food culture, colonialism, and Veganism of Europe? Does he talk about the much older plant based diets of Asia and the spiritual practices they're tied to were colonized by the English, or the fact that things like vertical farming (which he says is a "great prospect") are very old farming methods of non-European cultures in the Americas and how they were affected by colonization? Euro-centric society calls it "vegan food" and everyone else calls it "food". If it's truly a moral issue, I'd love to hear more about how the lack of morals in west civ has lead "us" down this path of darkness in the first place and the implications of such history on the "vegan movement" today. One of the biggest flaws in the conversation of veganism is that :we: are trying to work within the confines of a broken system. Large scale agriculture is not sustainable for plants, animals, nor environment. This is a long known fact, yet it is ignored because Capitalism. If you want to discuss morals, it seems to me to be a completely immoral way to treat the earth and all its inhabitants. The lack of awareness is astonishing. Humans truly are odd.
