Correction: GH5 V-Log L waveform is something like 5-80

I am so tired of color grading everything. I’ve been developing a workflow on committing to what I shoot is what I want in post off of my GH5. Thanks for the tips! 👍🏼

Thanks Ted, it makes sense when you think about the money and talent Panasonic will have thrown at the GH5 and its colour science!

Myles, you asked at the end of the video, "does this look decent?" Absolutely - it looked better than decent and better than most of the video I see on a daily basis. In our work I had gone the opposite route, and actually lifted the shadows in camera +1 - and this is because we sometimes wear dark clothing while demonstrating and it's really important to be able to see the position of legs and arms in our exercise videos. Nonetheless, this is a very useful video for me and I really appreciate you pointing me to it. Can you mention the name of the course that you sell that talks about white balance and set up? Cheers and thanks, KL
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 4 года назад
Thanks a lot! That sounds like a good approach lifting your shadows- it makes total sense if you need to see as much detail as possible :) in this case I was inspired by people that happily give up shadow detail but that definitely doesn't suit every shoot! At the moment I've got two courses, one for grading on FCPX we discussed in the other thread and the other is a 'how to shoot with the GH5' video course. You sound like you're already well on your way though, but for anyone reading these comments here's the link: udemy.com/course/gh5guide/?couponCode=SUMMERSAVER

In your custom picture profile its says "Custom1Nat" but on my GH5 picture profile, all the Custom profiles say "Custom1std" How do i change it to Natural? Thank you
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 2 года назад
Hi Zander, I think that just means I started from Natural and adjusted its default settings. In Photo Style, if you scroll to Natural, then save different settings, your profile would have Nat in the name too. Good luck!

Holy crap, I saw that comparison between vlog and out of camera. I thought for sure the out of camera one was vlog!!!
@ShotByMyles

Cheers! Some people have noticed a difference but I think I could've spent some time matching exposure of the highlights and fooled even them! I think this shows if you retain the highlights, then the look is similar even if technically there's a bit more room available in vlog. Thanks for watching!

4:02 The Vlog looks miles better when you look at the sky and I prefer the lifted shadows look
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 лет назад
Agreed, but I think that’s partly because the exposure’s slightly lower up there on the v-log. If you prefer lifted shadows with detail this is definitely not the technique for you haha Thanks for your comment

@@ShotByMyles Super thanks for the insightful video though! As usual you expose me to settings in GH5 I didn't even know about! I'm experimenting with the profiles and the time/result ratio as well. Natural looks great most of the time but when you put them side by side like that I feel why not just film in log/cined/hlg and run a quick conversion using leeming or whatever. I don't know the answer haha all I know is at least my skin tones are always good in Natural. I uploaded a video of a boxer on the gh5 fb group filmed in natural and some people seemed very surprised. So you're right, you don't have to shoot with log profiles. The video of the boxer is here : instagram.com/p/B4NhFpqHJRS/?

Jon Bear looks good! Also looks like you’ve managed some grading with Natural, but the lighting was good so you didn’t need to do too much :) There is no right answer on what works best for people, but my only point on not shooting Log full time is that it’s harder to expose and is unusable in 8 bit. Same with HLG, and I like 4K 50 and FHD 100P!

Did you use any Variable ND filter or anything like that when you recorded the footage ?
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 2 года назад
I’ll be honest, I’m extremely lazy and most of this footage was shot on travels- I rarely use NDs anyway but I’m almost certain there are none in here. For slow motion it doesn’t matter too much IMO but at regular speed with fast action it would look choppy to a trained eye!

Thank you for the video and that this topic was recorded. The approach is far too short because many filmmakers want to sell their LUTs or want to present themselves as experts in the video programs.I am only an amateur filmmaker and have been able to afford to experiment with many cameras so far. Ever since the first Blackmagic Cinema Pocket, I have understood how great flat video and post-processing can be. But unfortunately I'm running out of time too.I have therefore already tried the Natural Profile with the Panasonic cameras, but also the approach with Cinema like video. That should deliver a very good material out of cam.The shadows were too dark for me, but this can be adjusted as desired with the gradation in the camera.There are too many dark spots in your clips too, but maybe it is also because of how and what you watch the videos on. On the video editor, I go into the shadows a little more, but when viewed on a TV screen, it is too rich in contrast.I am currently trying the out of the cam approach again and think that the Lumix cameras work quite well. I am now trying to transfer this to the Nikon Z50. There is a balanced style with the name that I like.Ultimately, make more videos like this and encourage us to work without grading.Thanks again for all the time.

Thanks Thom! Yes I agree on the blacks in this video, they were crushed due to be dropping the shadows in-camera. This was to take inspiration from other work I’ve seen lately with crushed shadows but is obviously subjective!

Im heading to Japan for 2 weeks and was curious what your thoughts on shooting VLOG vs Nat vs CineD. Note that I'm in no way a colorist, I'm an assistant editor as a daily job but I shoot only as a hobbyist, and I have yet to purchase V-LOG but want the most out of my camera. With that said I had a few questions. 1. If I bought V-LOG I plan to shoot 4k24 10bit and 4k60 8bit in Natural. Am i asking for trouble to match them in post? 2. Is VLOG really bad in 8 bit for color and in low light? I've read people say that about both. I've seen people comment not to use VLOG in 8bit ever but I've also seen some pretty nice footage graded at 8bit so it's kind of hard to decide. 3. If I were to shoot Cine-D I hear people say this is the best of both worlds of natural and vlog. You can color a bit after the fact and looks pretty good in lowlight and in both 8bit/10bit. I head to Japan Nov 3 so any help appreciated! Thanks for the video I never thought to crush the blacks in natural (the profile I use the most).
@ShotByMyles

Honestly if you’re not looking to ‘have fun’ colour grading, I would totally stick to Natural! So to answer: 1. Yes, not straight forward to get a perfect match, and just a headache dealing with different grades for differing clips if you aren’t looking for practice 2. I have seen some horrible artefacting in 8 bit Log. If you’d be upset seeing purple noise in your lower mids and shadows, I’d avoid log in 8 bit. 3. Cine-D is technically the half way house giving a bit more latitude and dynamic range than Natural. If you wanted to extract an extra 3% of latitude from the sensor then that’s what it’s for, BUT the colours are a lot less pleasant than Natural, especially with skin tones. In the end I shot Natural, liked the image and never once got comments from clients. If you want to retain latitude to grade in post, don’t crush the dhadows in camera and it will still take some contrast and saturation to make things pop more if required. No one will miss the tiny bit more dynamic range you could’ve got otherwise, it’d only be noticeable in side by side shots IMO. Enjoy!
@ChessBoxin
@ChessBoxin Год назад
@@ShotByMyles hey I really appreciate the lengthy I'm depth answers and quick response too! With the said I'll just stick to natural and I will experiment with cine d. I'm a bit confused to hear that skin tones get worse through cine d if it has more dynamic range than natural. But my guess is something I will understand the more I shoot and experiment with it. Thanks again!

A question, do you think if I am a videographer who exposes for his highlights, should I use the shadow and highlight curve to reduce my highlights. I like how it looks with -2 on shadow but don't know if I should do the same to highlights since I expose for them. Do you mind doing a video on cine v or even portrait color profiles and if they are good for skintones. No one talks about portrait but I feel like it really good. I just want to know why people don't use portrait color profile.
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 лет назад
I haven't tested the reduction of the highlights, but I guess if that fit the look you were going for it might be worth a test! I feel like these are unchartered territories haha Responded to your other comment on the profiles :)

I shoot in V-log with a custom vlt LUT I made on the monitor. Then I just apply the same LUT when editing. That way I get the same look as when shooting, but still have the benefit of the better DR from shooting V-log if I need it. The best of both worlds :-)
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 лет назад
Sounds solid I do the same, but the waveform is still compressed to 20-80 isn’t it? Also unless your LUT is more than a conversion LUT then you still only end up with a ‘correction’ rather than any kind of creative look which is what I was going for here by dropping the shadows :)
@perhaar
@perhaar 5 лет назад
Sure, you have to make the look in the LUT. At the moment I shoot under a LUT I build from the kodak film emulation LUT from Davinci Resolve. That looks SO beautiful in camera (and post) :)
@perhaar
@perhaar 5 лет назад
I'm not sure how the build in waveform reacts. I use an external monitor. I'll check that next time, but why would it not take the LUT in account?

Love First thanks for the suggestion, I’ll bear it in mind! You’re right there aren’t many people talking about the Portrait mode specifically.
