Easiest Way To Wire a Light Switch and GFCI Outlet In the Same Box

In this video I show you how to wire a light switch and GFCI outlet in the same box. Having or adding an outlet to a light switch box is an easy process and increases the utility of any area or room.
You may want to buy a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) tester. A proper GFCI tester has a reset-button built onto the top of the GFCI tester. Once the button on the tester is pushed, The GFCI outlet should trip. If the GFCI doesn't trip correctly then there is an issue with the wiring.
ITEMS I USED IN THIS VIDEO:
PUSH CONNECT: amzn.to/3CqMduw
GFCI OUTLET : amzn.to/3RW4Wnw
GFCI TESTER : amzn.to/3SPJbac
WIRE-STRIPPERS : amzn.to/3VcUYRL
LIGHT SWITCH : amzn.to/3SYG3co
BLUE BOX : amzn.to/3fY3Wln

didn't discuss the difference between load and line and told people about using the bronze or silver colored screws but didn't say whether they went to the load or line side

You, Sir, Saved our backsides on this video. We wanted to add a plug next to the light switch in our small bathroom connected to our bedroom. Basically we had to run new wire in the ceiling down to the switch. I initially thought I was wiring it correctly but stopped myself when I suspected something wasn't right. I consulted the Google machine and came across your video. My wife and I watched intensely. Then we watched it again. Then I went to Home Depot and got a bag of 100 Quick Connects. Then we watched your video again as we were doing the wiring, following every step. We were ecstatic when we flipped the breaker and everything worked properly. Thank you so much for wonderfully clear instructions on how to do it properly. Wife and I are very happy.

The Electrical Code *requires* that luminaries *must* be on a separate circuit from a GFCI outlet. This does video not follow the electrical code.

Would this still work if the switch and the gfci are in two separate boxes and the wires is 14/2? Great video by the way.
@Lolatyou332
@Lolatyou332 Год назад
Nah. Pretty sure this isn't true as long as the circuit is used only in the bathroom and not anywhere else. Additionally, retrofitting has different code standards, unless the wall is basically majority open, the house does not have to be updated to the latest NEC code version.

Trying to add a light fromThe outlet but the outlet has both neutral & hot terminals already are used. I believe one is going to the ceiling fan. Is it possible to add another light to the same outlet by pigtailing all three wires(hot,fan,light) & connecting to just one terminal?..doing same to neutrals. thank you.

In new work yes, in old work no. When retrofitting consider a switch/GFI outlet combo device. That way you're not tearing into the drywall and adding the double box.

Why not have a jumper from the hot Load of the gfci to the switch? Then you'd only need a wire connector for the grounds and the switch and lights will be gfci protected. Wouldn't that be a valid option?
@hyperhomes4154
@hyperhomes4154 Год назад
Good question. Of course you could totally do what you suggested and the lights would work just fine. But only as long as the GFCI worked. Meaning, the power for the lights becomes completely dependent on the innate functioning of the GFCI-body itself. The wiring method in the video allows the lights to continue working regardless of faults found within the GFCI-body.
@surferdude642
@surferdude642 Год назад
@@hyperhomes4154 I thought about that too, and I agree that it would not be great when the light also goes out. If the switch was connected to a bathroom exhaust fan instead, it would be more appropriate. Nothing wrong with what you did, just wanted to point out a 2nd option. Thanks.
@robbynv9900
@robbynv9900 Год назад
@@surferdude642 gfci are only really necessary for receptacles and switches, lites only need gfci protection if located below a shower or water source.

If the switch next to the GFCI outlet were a smart switch that requires a neutral wire, how will you wire it?
@hyperhomes4154
@hyperhomes4154 Год назад
The next time I wire a smart switch, ill make a video of it so I can show you.. In any case, we would use the neutral wires already present in the box to connect the smart switch. Good luck until then.

I noticed you didn't need to use the load terminals on the gfi, but if I had another wire from a double receptacle box comming into that box would I connect that cable on the load side to run the 2 receptacles and protect them also. Would that work? Like in my kitchen on the other side of my sink.
@hyperhomes4154

The only problem here is that switch and any lights on it are NOT GFCI protected.
@Dusty_Gadget
@Dusty_Gadget Год назад
Do not do this! First off, do not use needle nose to connect wires to push-in connectors. Second, dont use a hammer drill on devices. Also, you don't get GFCI protection to devices downstream unless you feed it from the Load side of the GFCI. Last, but most certainly not least, never take electrical advice from a kid that can't stop gigglin during an instructional video!
