you holding up the first snail image: this is the most disgusting thing i've ever seen me knowing how the chapter ends: that won't last
@spiderdude2099
@spiderdude2099 3 года назад
The ending is rather divisive, but it's supposed to be a bit "unknowable" or "cosmic" in the "why" this curse or cycle is happening. It's classic cosmic horror. The horror of cosmic horror is by proposing that there are ancient unfeeling forces and beings that dwarf our world and understanding and we have no power to fight it or understand it.

Junji Ito has a short story called Slug Girl...maybe you should read that? Haha. As a more serious recommendation, definitely check out Tomie. It was Junji Ito's first and longest running work. It's really cool to see his art and horror improve over the course of the chapters. Also, one thing I want to point out about Junji Ito's horror is that he is a master of taking advantage of the panel format of manga/comics. There's build up to something horrific, but you have to turn the page to see it (take the dad's death, the girl with the spiral in her head, the un-pregnant woman in the hospital, the snail boy, even the final panel of Amigara Fault). It's almost like an interactive jumpscare.

@@FullofLit Junji Ito has explained that he writes about a lot of the things he himself is scared of, which includes snails and slugs! That's also where the idea for Gyo, his other long series, came from. He's scared of sharks and thought "what if they could walk."
@todorokisfavouriteobject9109
@todorokisfavouriteobject9109 2 года назад
It scared me honestly, I just bought GYO today and was considering picking up Uzumaki and Tomie too but I didn’t have enough as it would be roughly £40 and I didn’t wanna go too far over my budget my mum set for me and considering I was already £20 over I didn’t wanna be any more over it otherwise I would have gotten the belt. Might ask for the volumes for my bday tho!

Sorry its been a minute but one that really stuck out to me in this one is where this woman's husband "spirals up" and it breaks her and she starts to become terrified of her own body and finds out that there is a spiral in her own ear and starts tripping about it

I find it very surprising that no one has mentioned it already, but please, if you haven’t already, read the short story Long Dream (also by Junji Ito). After Uzumaki, it is, in my opinion, the most disturbing (yet beautiful) work he’s ever done.

trail of blood, killing stalking, and berserk are other great horror series. I think comics are really good with horror. Like its meaningful horror. BTW uzumaki is getting an animated series in 2022, there's 2 teasers out and it looks great. I remember when I was bored in class I'd always draw spirals all around the paper, just because it felt nice somehow. I then heard about uzumaki and became so aware of it lol I think I kinda stopped at that point

I really love the way you explain the plots and totally agree with your view about what is that scares us about Ito's stories. I read Uzumaki and most of his stories many years ago; as soon I saw the full edition of Uzumaki available in my country I got it immediately! I'm sure I'll enjoy it as the first time I read it. I'm also starting to get his short stories collection (I'm not sure if there are editions of these in English, I'm getting them in Spanish), where I hope to find the two stories you mention at the beginning, which I also enjoyed at the first time I read them! Thank you so much for sharing your review, I'll definitely keep checking more of your videos.

I agree that it's an amazing story. Reading the end just made me really sad. It gives just the right amount of closure, whilst still leaving the viewer with more questions than answers. The only bit of Uzumaki I didn't like was the bit with the babies. I skipped that bit originally because it's just too disgusting. This isn't supposed medical body horror (like Gyo). I just can't fucking read stuff like that. And though didn't disgust me nearly as much, the mosquito ladies sucking people's blood also seemed equally out of place (again, zombification is a different kind of body horror). If you just removed chapters 10 and 11 from the story, nothing of value would be lost. Neither of those chapters fit in a story that's about existential body horror.

What I love about Junji Ito is that he puts politics inside his mangas. The human-shaped holes are based on a Japanese proverb that goes "If a pole sticks up you must hammer it down". E.i. Do not stick out. Do not draw attention to yourself. Comform to society. No matter the price.
@CommissarMitch
@CommissarMitch 2 года назад
It should be noted that the people who are drawn to the holes are not conformist people. They are so alone in their life that they have a compulsion to enter the hole just to feel less lonely.
