Eckhart Tolle is widely recognized as one of the most original and inspiring spiritual teachers of our time. He travels and teaches throughout the world.
Eckhart is not aligned with any particular religion or tradition, but excludes none. His profound yet simple and practical teachings have helped thousands of people find inner peace, healing and greater fulfillment in their lives. At the core of his teachings lies the transformation of individual and collective human consciousness - a global spiritual awakening.
Eckhart Tolle is the author of The Power of Now, a #1 New York Times Bestseller, which has been translated into 32 languages and become one of the most influential spiritual books of our time.
In his most recent book, A New Earth, he shows how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world.

I found that as soon as I started to accept and nourish the pain sensations the less intense the pain. For many years I tried to get rid of this pain, figure it out, find its root, but then I turned to love and gave the pain the gentle & compassionate attention it was seeking. I enjoyed watching this exploration.

One of the problems with *different levels of truth* is that it can be gaslighting or even abusing in the wrong context, even though it's not intended by the advisor. A good example is when teaching non-resistance to someone who's in pain. I see kim eng explain how to label the pain of the questioner as sensation, and to endlessly accept, like it'll be there forever (to bypass the need for the ego to want it to end asap.) The advise completely disregards the fact that the questioners pain may be pointing to physical, nutritional or psychological/ emotional changes she needs to make in her life. It's not "blaming" other people, to realise that you can choose to eliminate people from your life, move location or put up stronger boundaries. I'm talking from experience, I wanted a lot of escape when I started my awakening journey, but even meditation and detachment can be escapism! Pain has a valid function, it points to aspects of our lives that aren't working, but we need the inner work simultaneously, so that we don't endlessly project our problems onto external factors. But it's a fact that when you start to wake up, changing diet and sometimes your whole social circle is actually common. Another good example is eckharts video on forgiveness. You can drop to a space of realisation that nothing needs forgiving. Unfortunately, this is what we all do, but we do it from repression, and denial of our parent's and other's abuse, but keep our pain and it adds to the painbody. Most people need emotional work to come to that Level of truth: that your life is the perfectly orchestrated story of awakening through pain, and you thank your perpetrators, now recognised as teachers. I love their teachings, but every truth needs proper context.

I’m sorry everyone but this is the first time I have disagreed with the answer given to this poor lady, I honestly don’t believe she has to accept this pain forever! This is a heartless response to someone in deep need, she needs medical attention etc as pain like that would be debilitating. I’m sure Eckhart would have given a very different answer, also would have been more compassionate.

I respect the various teachers who have answered questions like this. But for some of us, who are not enlightened, and sometimes experience pain at a level of (for example) 11 or more on that "scale of 1 to 10" the medics ask about ... it's a real problem that can't always be solved at the present moment by acceptance or surrender. Even Christ cried out on the cross ... having already prayed to God to let this cup pass from his lips, as he anticipated what he was going to have to endure (that's my interpretation anyway). This body is a temporary garment, but for now we *are* living in it.

Thinking about the future seems totally contradictory to be in the now. What amplifies the sensation of pain is thinking that it will last forever, which is opening the door to the 'poor little me'. What worked for me is to stop labelling discomfort as pain (reference to the past) as well as to stop dwelling into the idea that it won't ever stop, which perpetuates the feeling. Last time I did that kind of pity party I ended up crying in despair. Now this is only my experience, what works for me might not work for others.

Pain is a signal that calls attention to do something. That level and type of pain resonate with possible trauma. In case of trauma, the pain dynamic sometime gets stuck in a loop, the pain calling for a body response. Simply attending to complete awareness in such case could be like staying in your house on fire but being deeply aware. Trauma body therapist could help.

Liz R : I agree, but...they didn’t. In face of this kind of pain, deep awareness would have been to wander about the other sensations, the non-painful ones, and observe what changes, if change comes. But focussing on this pain lasting for eternity?! That was a demonstration of a lack of competence regarding body or trauma. The responsabile attitude would have been to take a position of *really* not knowing. No approach is the ultimate answer: publishing this video as is was a bit silly, thoughtless and to a certain extend irresponsible.

I hope she emphasises more on the process of accepting things and how your mind can detach from the body pain. I understand the comments here that the lady needs help from health practitioners but even if she sees all of them, the healing will still start in your mind, accepting the reality, accepting the help, etc. So the healing can begin.

In Vipassana meditation it is taught that the pain goes away if you observe it. I sat two ten-day courses and can testify to that. The pain should never be resisted because through it the body wants your attention. When you give it, the body shows exactly what's wrong. Sometimes pains point to subconscious issues, like lack of forgiveness. Sometimes, when you focus on pain in meditation, you get images of past traumas which you have not let go. So by focusing on pain you can resolve it because the body will show how exactly it was caused. The pain disappears when you release that which caused it. Vipassana and in general Buddhist meditators, if they meditate deeply enough, experience spontaneous healings even though illnesses are advanced. The spontaneous healing is also known as a particular meditation stage in Buddhism.

I think dealing with chronic pain that it needs to be surrounded by love & not an imagining that it would last forever. I deal with chronic illnesses & there is a place for compassion with this because it can truly change your entire life. Personally, I think it's almost best to hear about dealing with chronic pain from someone that has been through it oneself. You really have no idea how much it feels like its killing everything within you when going through the acute pain & then the chronic pain. I think society still has some learning to do when it comes to chronic pain patients. It has to be understood from the inside.

I had intense pain of esophagus because of reflux disease which I tried so hard to calm myself with meditation. In retrospect, I think there was an idiotic resistance to me not to seek proper medical advice. When I got checked and started medication, my pain went from 8/10 to 2/10 in a few days. Agreed!!! We are definitely both physical-chemical being and spiritual-artistic beings in many ways! Denying any of these, can be harmful :/ Why be so hard on yourself and not seek a physician? Because your ego wants you to believe that you can solve everything by mediating? I'm not saying meditation does not work, in fact it has saved my life from constant obsessive-compulsive and intrusive thoughts, and it has brought to me the peace that I had never had before, but I'm just saying, sometimes, some stuff are more biochemical/physical than spiritual, this is our beautiful nature!! A lot of resistance from the physicians in the last three years following my car accident. However, just last week the neurologist from my native country pointed that it might be an injured/stuck vagus nerve. Nerve injuries are hard to detect and silent. The most physicians have no idea and blame the pain for psychological reasons. Now I am searching for a doctor with nerve injury knowledge. Kim appears to take bits and pieces of Eckhart's teaching (labeling the flower etc.) and tries to do the same as him but she doesn't seem to have his insight, it just doesn't resonate the same way - the universal consciousness vibrations seem to be missing. With Eckhart consciousness radiates from him from the inside out - it's like he's on fire but in a calm and very peaceful way. Kim often sounds a little sharp too when she questions people. It would be preferable if she go and practice on herself some more (as we all must do) before trying to help others. It's the same as if I got up there now and tried to teach, I would be poor at it too because I am not conscious or practiced enough yet and she appears not to be either. Just telling someone they have to accept anything as if they chose it forever without that advice coming from pure consciousness is futile. Without it coming from the energy of pure love and absolute consciousness it means absolutely nothing. It's just a piece of 'advice' (and not even really that) nothing more. Sorry.

Being in the present moment is very helpful, and accept our pain is also helpful. That also explain that happiness is not a given to us. A healthy person breathing naturally, it's there whether we are aware of it or not. Happiness is not like that, its more like breathing to a lung cancer patient who gets to breath a little easier when one has to think about it and work on it.

If it is true that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, then it stands to reason that pain by any other name would still HURT. Just like when miss Kim acknowledged the beauty and the sweet essence of the rose, it did not change it's form, nether did it cease to be a rose. Likewise, pain still HURTS whether or not we choose to accept it, reject, or acknowledge it as something else. If this poor woman had a gaping, profusely bleeding stab wound, she could not stop the pain, nor the flow of blood, nor could she close and heal her wound simply by changing her perception or level of acceptance/resistance. That is a ridiculous and absurd notion. To try to convince this woman, or to even imply that she possesses all the power in the world within herself to control or heal her own disease/pain process is to place a heavy, burdensome yoke around her neck that she cannot possibly bare. 😞

I hope the poor woman gets a diagnosis for her pain. As a retired nurse having worked in palliative care I dislike seeing people suffering. She seemed like a woman crying out for help and probably didn’t get it in my opinion. I have secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and a form of arthritis. I have gone through the grieving process and accept it is what it is. I dislike taking medication but when the pain becomes unbearable I do because that’s my choice. The woman asking the question is no where near accepting of her pain. And why should she be when she doesn’t know the cause. I wish her well. 🙏

Passed 20 kidney stones (Oxylates don't like me) so...I know pain and pain can certainly stem from emotion and psychosomatics and it can come from the bodies pain receptors when an situation arises that needs direct intervention. I hope this woman sought ought medical advice to rule out a more serious issue.

I see the journey this lady is on, a journey to find relief from the immense suffering of intense physical pain. It’s a tough road. I had a tumour in my pelvis that caused pain so fierce I had body convulsions and often passed out. I went in and out of a coma over the period of two days. The incredible pain lasted for three and a half years. I was never free of it. Twice I had major pelvic reconstructive surgery which in itself took two years to be able to walk again from. Accompanying the extreme sensations in the pelvis, there was extraordinary headaches and tension in the shoulders and feet. I drifted in and out of a coma after the second operation. It was grace that saved “me”. There was nothing I could do. There is nothing this lady can do. The I that we believe ourselves to be has absolutely no power. Life has put the pain there, and only life can take it away. By grace, I was taken on a journey through Buddhist monasteries, cancer wards and yoga ashrams, endless reading and listening to talks and reading all the spiritual works. Somehow, a yoga teacher was found who worked in ways that truly helped to heal the body although I didn’t know it at the time. I stumbled across his studio in the Himalayas. I didn’t carry on the practices he taught me until after six months of being at home and suddenly, I started practising. Just one posture, a supported backbend using cushions. Over the last three and a half years, I honed this one posture, practising deep breathing for about an hour a day. IT CURED ME. Completely healed. And now the relaxation is has provided me with just gets deeper and deeper. How this happened is a mystery. Call it grace or total surrender of the I. But really, there is no I so there’s nothing that can surrender. You’re already in a state of surrender; you just haven’t realised it yet. Nothing can practice presence or anything. Only when it is realised that there is nothing you can do, will life bring you relief. Perhaps. It’s ignorant to think there’s anything you can do. It’s a total mystery.

I've dealt with intense physical pain and had a lot of healing. And this never would have worked for me. Because nothing in the physical realm is forever. But I did work with totally accepting and totally allowing the pain in the present moment. But I also noticed my thoughts about the physical pain. LIke "I"m dying, or something horrible is happening or my body is ripping....etcetera. Then I saw that it was THOUGHTS that intensified the pain. So the labeling part is good...because basically those were horrible labels that I was giving it. I wish Kim had asked some questions to really know what was happening because this woman....seemed very aware and connected to herself. Having a little more information would make more sense to me.

Accepting means you accept the present moment. Accept the form of the present moment as if it'd last for eternity. That's acceptance. True acceptance means you are willing to feel this emotion, this pain in your body, this form, forever.

I get why Kim said accepting it as of it would last for eternity, but the way it landed makes people close down to her message and contract around it. The main thing is that the questioner is making a judgment about what is happening to her. She is making her experience wrong. The body senses the judgement she's made and increases the pain because the body does not feel safe under her perception that there's something wrong. The body takes the messages you send to it literally.

I'm sitting unsure on the response given to her in this moment and my mind and body are OK with being where I am. I am watching my thoughts whirl in being apprehensive in writing this creating a tenseness. I will also examine the thoughts and replace them with new freeing ones which will work for me. Some of us were taught not to challenge those who 'speak' with authority or title. I must be one so off I go to reprogram by undoing that messaging and putting in messaging that will quickly calm my brain in the now and beyond and allow me to own my internal wisdom always. ❤

Ty for this great video..I totally get this..The word pain itself creates a fight against it, now, if we take the word away, and see it as a sensation, allow it, let go of resisting, it can help..Ive been noticing tension in my upper stomach area and I noticed I was automatically tensing up.. .it's there though stationary now..it feels stuck....the word pain, to me, creates an immediate fight against it, it's subtle, but it is a tensing up against it more, so, now I can let go of the word, because it's meaning is considered, unwanted, it's a saying no, this isn't good, so, it's the meaning that the word pain represents, that makes us fight against it, fight the feeling, so, if we can let go of the meaning, not denying the feeling, but letting go of the meaning, by saying, it's a sensation, then allow the feeling, allow the sensation without fighting it, letting it be..I'm doing this now...its helping...Im only now realizing my body in pain, when before it was just natural, I didn't realize it, I'm also noticing automatic tensing up..in the same area, so it's old emotions that feel stuck, but I can only allow, and let it be, I can't make it go away, so, I'm just allowing it to be there and it will go when it will..I can say, I release any tension in body, or not say anything and just let it be, knowing it will go when it is supposed to, Thank you Kim .Love You and Eckhart too!!!! 🙏☮️♥️

. When your body is feeling pain it means there is something wrong with it. If you just accept the pain and not do anything about it you could end up dying or being in pain the rest of your life. Yes you can accept the fact you have pain but you need to go to the doctor to try to find out what is causing it. It could mean you have a disease or it could mean you need to change your diet. There are a lot of things you can do that are proactive that could help with the pain besides just accepting it and carrying on without doing anything about it. I fear these types of responses might cause some people not to go to the doctor and thus end up getting very serious illnesses that could have been prevented.

Accepting? Yes. But I guess the pain is also a (continuous) invitation to "go" to your own solar center, and thus out of your head. That makes a big difference, to me anyways. Doing that may not be easy. But if you *can* do it, you'll get access to a lot of information/wisdom...

It is what it is. There is pain. Or what we labeled as pain. Pain is something unpleasant we don't want to feel so it's normal we create resistance to it. If you manage to observe de physical feeling without labeling or judging and just let it be, perhaps you can let go of it. You will still feel the sensation but you will also, hopefully be at peace with it. For sure it takes practice but you will eventually get more comfortable with it in time. Whoever reads this, I wish you peace.

If I am willing to accept "this pain in my body forever," (in my case residual nerve pain following infection) what would be the impetus for making it change? I am willing to accept it as the state of now, that I need to center it, not exacerbate it with labels or judgement, and that there are steps I can take to try and soothe it, including identifying the emotional and social origins of my reactions to it. It is amazing that there are pharmaceuticals that can instantly relieve pain and much of the fear that accompanies it but we avoid using them. It is easier to teach oneself better coping strategy when one is not in physical pain.
