East Carson River Fishing (backcountry)
#14 Rainbow Warrior and the #12 Hoover caught the fish.
Glad I braved the approaching thunderstorm as I was rewarded with a solid rainbow. Had to hike in a long ways from the airport to fish this section of the river below Hangman's.
Check out the blog! Look for the same day for more information about the the video post:

It was a while ago so I forgot what I had on exactly, but the bottom section of the leader was probably straight 5' 4x fluoro tippet. The nymph setup was a two nymph dropper setup which has the top nymph tied on a surgeon's knot tag and below that about 24" the bottom nymph. My recent videos discuss my setup and it is either the same or very similar to what I was using that day.

Thank for sharing PD. I have fished the ECarson one time, from Hangman's to about a quarter mile past the gauging station. I fished in in mid- October, and had a great time, It's so beautiful. I did not catch a lot a fish, but I hit my first and only grand slam, meaning, I caught fish by nymphing, wet flies, dry flies, and a streamer. I have always wanted to hike down from the airport, although, after reading your blog, I wander if it would be better to hiking in from the bridge. Or, you could 4wd in from Neveda. I want to fish this fishery in the late fall/early winter. I am heading up to the McCloud this weekend.
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 6 лет назад
Thanks Todd--I agree about the scenery, especially in the fall. I think hiking down from the bridge would be better, and ideal if you had a 4wd with high clearance to access it from the leviathan mine road in Nevada. That is cool about the grand slam using the four methods--will have to give that a try when the fishing is very good. Good luck on the McCloud, I am going to fish it for the first time in September or October--already looking forward to it!

You will do great on the McCloud. The rainbows are so strong there. I will be there the weekend after Labor day, and the weekend of Columbus day. Let me know if you have any questions about the McCloud. I have been fishing there for about 20 years.

PD, I bought your video. Although, overall, consider myself to be a to advanced fly fisher, I knew that I could improve on my indicator nymphing, and at the same time, dive into the tightline/euro world. For the past 2 days I have been watching the video during my commute, and taking notes. I think the information in leader set up, weight selection, and rigging set ups are great. And, also, the entire tightline/euro nymphing is great. Just to clarify, the indicator section is great, but I am already understand it. It's great to see you fishing rivers that I know very well, too. I am excited to go out this weekend and dial in these new techniques. I am curious to know what river #2 is? At first, I thought it was the McClould, but I do not think it is. Thanks for getting me stoked on tightline nymph fishing. I always nymph, but always under an indicator. If I catch 50% of the fish that you catch in a day, I will be stoked. I will let you know how I do.

I just fished a few hours on my local stream although conditions are not good-bright sun and low water, I started by fishing traditional upstream nymph.Could not see the line tip most of the time, had some old stick on foam indicators in my vest-never used em and never fished an indicator before. I still did not catch (except one hook up that got off) but that bit of foam made for an enjoyable few hours, I was able to follow the cast in all light conditions, but most of all, watching the indicator really taught me where the currents are, then I realised I had the same view as from your headcam-scaled down-my streams are trickles compared to yours, thats when got a fish. I still need to learn how to rig up to get my nymphs deeper sooner but I'm now hooked on this method-pity the dang trout were not though LOL Anyway thanks for the great videos, looking forward to September and hopefully more water.

Beautiful videos, new subscriber. Looking to get back to the Carson, haven't fished it since the 90's; am I crazy to try and hit it pre-runoff or just wait for summer? Looking at the flow tables I can maybe squeeze in last weekend of March.
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 2 года назад
Thanks J! I think you could get some decent fishing in before the runoff though the water will be cold. Should be some decent bwo's hatches. I tried it once in March and didn't do well, but that was near 395 in Nevada and I don't think I went far enough upstream (it seemed to be heavily poached around there).
@IH8CA
@IH8CA 2 года назад
@@purpledrakefishing Excellent, thanks for the advice! Funny you mentioned that, I was thinking of finding a spot off 395 as well but I may go closer to the state line or come in from the other side. It's never a bad idea if you're still fishing.

PD I like your videos and have subscribed. I occasionally fly fish the Truckee and Little Truckee, but have had limited success. Thinking of getting a rod better suited for nymphing. The Echo Shadow 2 fits my budget and has gotten some good reviews. My question is would you recommend a 3wt or 4wt for the Truckee and Little Truckee? Also have to try the East Carson River after seeing your videos.
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 6 лет назад
Thanks Chris, Definitely go with the 3wt! The combination of large fish and strong flows on the Big T would make it tough on the 2wt. I have heard great things about the echo shadow--I almost bought the 3wt but decided to go with the 3wt Sage Pulse 10', which has been a great rod and what I have been using on the Truckee.

That was a good one again, I like fishing in the rain -although thunder storms can be scary when you have a lightning conductor in you hand LOL, other aspects I like about your videos is no music-the river makes its own music, and no prolonged holding the fish up to the camera-we all know what trout look like-they live in water; I often wonder how some video makers would like to be held under water while somebody takes a photo lol. Great stuff, keep em coming.
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 6 лет назад
Thanks Jaques--I agree about the music and fishing videos. Some of the fish handling in a lot of videos where the trout is held out of the water for a long time makes me cringe. Trout are tough but being held out of the water really hurts their change of survival. They have done studies where a rainbow trout's mortality rate drops dramatically after release when it is held out of the water for more than 10 seconds. I forget, but I think for browns it is around 20 seconds.

PD - these are great fish - inspiring - thanks mate. Can you help me - if not confidential: can I access the dirt road from the parking lot at Hangman's Bridge? Its been some time since I was at that spot and don't recall if 4x4 access is available - (or blocked or private land). I would love to read your thoughts.
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 6 лет назад
Thanks for the kind words Mark, I appreciate it. There is no dirt road from that parking lot at hangman's, just a trail. I think the best way to fish the wild section is to either hike downstream from that bridge on the trail a few miles, then fish your way back to your car, or to drive in from the Leviathan Mine road (from 395 in NV) if you have a solid 4wd with high clearance. Hiking in from the airport was not worth it, imo. Very cool back in there, feels like you are really in the wilderness.
@markk364

Thank you PD --- the hike down and up from Airport seems daunting. So, walking in and out a few miles is best - got it - thanks mate. Going up there next Wed-Thurs. Perfecting my Euro tactics.

@@purpledrakefishing I know this a 2 yr old thread but I disagree What you said about it not being worth walk-in down from the airport. It took me about 40 minutes to get down to the river I work my way up stream back up to hangman’s bridge. It was the best fishing I ever had in one day so numerous 2 foot plus rainbows end Court my personal best a 27inch.

Nice, PD! Hit the Carson a few days after the thunderstorm! Apparently the EC gets muddy really fast due to the surrounding hills and the fire. Got my PB (sadly, a stocker I think) from the EC but it's still a PB! The water looked pretty low and slow from Hangman's bridge, but we didn't end up fishing the C&R section. I guided my buddy to his first fish on the fly on the EC though! How long is the hike from the airport to the river? I'd like to fish the WC when there's more water. The WC taught me stealth and I was able to bring a nice brown to hand under a cut. Tight lines, PD!
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 6 лет назад
Thanks ATM--the hike from the airport was brutal and it wasn't a defined trail in a lot of parts and it would be easy to get lost (as I temporarily did!). I would recommend just hiking downstream from Hangman's, or if you have a high clearance 4wd, to drive in through the levianthan road. If you do hike down from the bridge, take the effort to go a few miles before you start fishing. The area not far from the bridge gets tons of pressure and the fishing isn't as good.
