East Dean is located in the heart of the South Downs, approximately 7 miles north of Chichester.
We started our walk at the C12 All Saints church which is located on the north east edge of the village. As with all churches of such longevity, this building, believed to be the first on the site, has undergone numerous alterations over the centuries. Further information may be found at sussexparishchurches.org/chur....
From here, we wandered to the eastern edge of the village and then made our way up Eastdean Hill. We were not disappointed - the South Downs in their early autumnal glory. Red Kites were in abundance, and we were fortunate enough to catch sight of a late Speckled Wood butterfly.
We returned to the village, at the centre of which is the pond, which is considered to be the source of the River Lavant. East Dean is, in the main, a delightful collection of historic buildings. Generally they are of brick and flint construction, a design that is typical of this area of West Sussex.
All background and natural sounds were recorded during our time filming.
We hope you enjoyed watching as much as we enjoyed walking. If you did, please remember to click the thumbs up (like) button, and leave a comment.

Another delightful video of one of my favourite parts of Sussex. The wildlife shots add a lot, and it was good to see the Red Kite has returned - I'm sure there were none around there 50 years ago. Thank you for the route map, and the shot of the signpost was great to remind me of just how many delights there are in the surrounding area. You are clearly early risers, but it's a good way to get such a peaceful feel to your video.

Thank you for your kind comments, Jim. The numbers of Red Kite here in the south are quite significant, and whilst it is great to see them, we can not help but feel that, perhaps, there is too many for the ever-decreasing land available to them. Apparently, there was a conservation initiative which began in 1990 for their reintroduction, and it has been successful!

Thanks for another lovely video. I do like the early morning light- it does seem to suit these videos. I agree with you re the red kites - there is not enough land for them all. If you travel to the Chilterns the sky ‘is riven’ with them! I can count over 20 birds in the sky at any one time! It is choc a bloc with them! We have 1 here- it is exciting to see it - pretty sure it is fed by someone 2 roads away. It cries a lot & cannot keep a mate ( had 3 partners that have stayed just a few days and then disappeared) it has been here at least 10 years & I worry if it disappears for a week but it has always returned. I hope your dog is managing ok. It is so cold now! The village was just perfection -I liked the duck house on the duck pond. And the lovely flint houses. And it had a pub too! If you had to create a village I think this would fit the bill! Thanks !

Thank you for your kind comments, Diana. The early morning is so tranquil, though at this time of year we are having to start out later due to the lack of light! Our view of the kites is that with limited (and decreasing) space for territories, other species lower down the food chain are at greater risk. Small mammals and birds already have a hard enough time due loss of habitat caused by overdevelopment, and having so many large predators (other raptors such as Buzzard) makes their survival even tougher. They make great subjects to film but there needs to be balance. Our dog is getting by; she has some good days and some bad - thank you for asking. We have managed a few short walks with her recently but no filming. It can be tricky coordinating our work, the weather and the dog's desire to walk! We need to get out again soon as we only have a couple of films to make. We agree, aesthetically the perfect village. And it was certainly the perfect walk!

Thank you. Unfortunately, the clip ends pretty much as in the video. However, I do have a couple of clips that show the complete pitch, but these are rather more distant from above East Dean Hill. If you are interested, let me know.
