Henfield is a delightfully beautiful village in West Sussex, in the Horsham District, a few miles north of Shoreham and Brighton on the A281. Situated on a high open ridge with delightful views of the Southdowns National Park, it is home to some beautiful historic timber-framed houses of significance. Join me as I explore this wonderful place and some of its history.

... what a pleasant surprise, I've just stumbled over this episode by chance, I was a young farm hand in Henfield back in the the late 60's, and have my 21st birthday bash at the george pub ... I never realised just how old the village was ... thanks for bringing back all the old memories

Richard, thanks for the video and history! I'd found an ancestor had lived in Henfield in the 1830s, and appreciated the chance to see where he grew up. I'm also having fun seeing the differences between the Sussex countryside and the trails out here around San Francisco - we don't find a lot of hill forts out here!
@RichardVobes

Lol - I bet you don't find hillforts in San Francisco! :)

I found Christie Road and the surrounding countryside in Martinez (east of San Francisco) to be very similar to the abandoned railway track leading to Steyning from Henfield. The hills are much like the downs and theres an eerie familiarity walking the trail at dusk.

@@olivertl9658 Especially in spring when the grass is bright green! The eucalyptus, coast live oak, and barbed wire would be the giveaway. There's parts of Almaden Quicksilver park near San Jose that can feel like a dark English forest. I'll occasionally find signs of the mercury mining - hundred year old signs of habitation, as opposed to three thousand years.

What a great video! Lovely to see someone so enthusiastic about my village. Nothing seems to interest me more than the history of Henfield and Cowfold these days. Interesting to hear you talk about how smelly the tanyard would of been as I know it’s referred to a pinchnose green :) Always nice to hear someone compliment Henfields views as they really are great! If you come again you must walk to the river and maybe even see our resident seal ‘Neil’ or failing that see our friendly peacocks that seem to of put Henfield on the map these past weeks!

Great video. I moved to Henfield four years ago and love it here. Pretty and with with a lot of history for a small place, it's small enough to be peaceful, big enough to have facilities and a really nice community. The view at 1:44 is from the end of the lane I live on in the Nep Town, an area that unfortunately isn't shown in the video.

Really enjoyed this video; my grandparents spent their last few years in Henfield. There has been quite a lot of building in Henfield since the 60s when the railway closed (where the station was is now called ‘the Beechings’ (!!)) and it would do very well if it had a station now!

That village looked familiar until you took us to where the main road divides and I realized that I had cycled that way a couple of years ago. I like there deja vu moments! Beautiful place and you certainly showed us some real gems.

There was a comedy series called "OH DR BEECHAM.", it was about the destruction of British Rail by that twit and the effects of the workers when their routes were made redundant. I especially liked the theme song. Oh, Dr Beecham what have you done, there once were lots of trains to catch and now there will be none. I'll have to buy a bike as I can' t afford a car, OH DR BEECHAM WHAT A NAUGHTY MAN YOU ARE!!!!!!! The tube is very catchy. Many thanks for your interesting and well-put videos.

An interesting comment you make about the railway and how it has affected these villages/towns which if the railway were still there they would be commuter towns to both London and Brighton. I think of Billingshurst and how different that might look today if they had lost their railway - instead it has grown hugely and continues to do so. I sometimes get Steyning and Henfield mixed up, I think Billingshurst would have a similar feel if the railway had gone.
@RichardVobes
@RichardVobes 6 лет назад
I think you are right. There is no right or wrong answer. People will gravitate to live near connections, the down side is the village or town will grow and more rabbit huts with wrap around the outskirts.

Wow those were just some spectacular older buildings. Really unique! You are right about that rascal Beeching. Shame he had to shut up all those historic train stations, as well it kept towns like this from being able to use the lines for shipping & such. But you are right, it did preserve these historic towns & keep urbanization out! So amen to that!
