This feels like they are playing it minutes before the re unification, and playing it the way that this uplifting anthem sounds sad.........RIP DDR 1949-1990
The current german national anthem is waaaaay closer to being nazi than the east german national anthem, thats for sure, the east germans were the opposite of nazis, truly progressive before progressive times, socialists just tend to be that way, we're just better people if you think about it.
germany's current anthem is "good enough" and has much greater historical significance to Germany and the German people, but i agree that this anthem simply _sounds_ better
Remember the east germans never asked for annexation, just free travel so they could finally see their families again. Some did actually want total annexation, but that was at the cost of the majority of germans who did not. Some still adore the former state, in what is called Ostalgie. Let the DDR live in our hearts forever. Though it may not exist anymore.
If anyone wants to learn more about East Germany, I recommend Beyond The Wall: East Germany 1949-1990, by Katja Hoyer. Like Angela Merkel, she grew up in East Germany, and as a historian offers a very detailed and balanced telling of life in the DDR. It's really recent too, just came out sometime earlier this year.
So much better. Not to mention, it's the only original German anthem. The Empire just copied UK's anthem and the Weimar Republic + 3rd Reich + West Germany + current Germany copied Austria's old anthem
Do you know the text of this Anthem? I think, you don't know it! Read it and translate it in english, if you can. I'm a man from the German Democratic Republic and I hat six years English in my scool. I think, I can speak better English, as the most people of West- Germany. So long honey!
What if everything start to collasp in the 2000 and 2001 (Soviet union fell in 2001) how the world will be right now because the cold war last 10 more years ??
It would be completely different, 9/11 would seemingly not have happened, perhaps a mujahideen attack on Moscow instead, maybe that’s even the catalyst for the Soviet collapse. In real life, America didn’t really become a target for Islamists until the Soviet Union had fallen, and in fact even today Russia is still more of a target due to its “occupation” of what Islamists see as Muslim lands in the Caucasus.

i think this song reflects not the minds of the corrupt and ill-minded politicians that have taken advantage of and tyranically oppressed the german population (remember, they were subjected to propaganda in the war years and had no idea about the tragedies) but of the german population, the everyman hope of, after decades of strife and sorrow, they may one day reunite and finally be at peace, and achieve redemption.
Ey EoinnyToast, just to remind you: I am a native German (ok i was born in Poland but that doesn't matter) and I learned much about the GDR in school. Nothing about poverty there, the people were doing fine except they wanted to see their families in the west.
