My mom taught me how to knit as a kid and as an adult I wanted to relearn... never understood why all the American tutorials looks so difficult and clunky till I realized I learned a completely different style as a kid. Thank you for these easy videos to help me remember how to knit.
This is the method I was taught as a girl! So easy. You just have to learn to adjust some directions in patterns but once you understand what is happening to the stitches, you will work it out.
I learned Russian knitting from Maryna’s class and watching others on RU-vid. My stitches are so even! And my hands don’t hurt. She is the best teacher
Oooh, thank you so much! I'm happy to hear that you enjoy this knitting style and, most importantly, that your hands don't hurt. It is amazing! Thank you :-)
I must have been a Russian in a former life as this was how I taught myself to knit. But I had to "unlearn" my self-taught way when I was told I would have problems following patterns and doing different knitting stitches. Now I want to relearn it!
This is what I did when I was learning to knit after learning to crochet. Wrapping as my co-workers did just looked exhausting. It took me awhile to find this knitting style to boost my confidence and how to increase and decrease as the loops were backwards. Thank you for your channel of videos and website.
I knit and purl the Russian style. That is a less complex explanation than continental combined! Thank you for explaining this type of knitting so clearly.
I have always knitted the same way as you, both knit and purl. I have no idea who taught me but it must have been when I was very very young because I don't remember learning. It's definitely the best and fastest way.
Hey Maryna, thank you so much for showing me how to purl Russian way. So easy to do. You are a good teacher, I never saw it before how to do this. You have explain it in a good manner! Thanks for sharing.
This was my go-to purl for a long time until I hit a cabled sweater pattern where I just couldn’t get gauge unless I changed my purls to the “standard” Norwegian method. Russian purls make the most sense and are more even to knit stitches because they are just that - exactly the same stitch, but just turned around. If you saw someone working a (continental style) knit stitch from behind (looking at their “wrong side”), it would look like a Russian purl. However, “even” is not always what the pattern needs. Good to keep in mind!
Thank you for your insight, Holly. Yes, Eastern purls are faster and easier than classic purls, but if the gauge is off, it makes sense to switch to the classic knitting. Happy knitting, my friend!
I thought I was doing this or similar, but I have to observe now because in my knit row I always have to knit thru the back or it is twisted. Your knitting is always so even so I intend to work on this and refine what I am doing. Thank You!
@@carolcook4114 So are you saying that is the way you also knit the next row -into the back - when you purl this way ? Surprised she didn't mention it???
Hello Barbara, To make sure the stitches are not twisted, we should be consistent and work both knits and purls using the Russian technique. I mention this fact at 4:08 of the video and in the photo tutorial at www.10rowsaday.com/russian-purl-stitch
@BarbaraL Lowell There are 4 different ways of doing normal (untwisted) Stockinette pattern in continental. It depends which loop and yarn combo you pick that’s comfortable. For example KTFL with yarn picked from the bottom up while PTFL with yarn over top is the same as this Russian method which is KTBL with yarn picked from bottom while PTFL with yarn also picked from the bottom up. Here are the 4 combos for you to try out; 1. KTFL YBU & PTFL YOT 2. KTBL YBU & PTFL YBU 3. KTFL YOT & PTBL YOT 4. KTBL YOT & PTBL YBU
@@Pixxelina I have gotten spoiled by PTBL YBU I was just concerned I was doing it wrong because I needed to pair it with KTBL YOT. You reassured me so thanx so much.
Thank you so much! I purl Norwegian style which I also like, but it feels a bit slow if I have an entire row to purl -- Russian purling will be SO much faster. I really appreciate your teaching style and your videos -- thank you!
You are most welcome, Nancy! If you purl stitches the Russian way, remember to knit them the Russian way in the next row. Otherwise, the stitches will be twisted. Happy knitting :-)
@@10rowsaday This is actually one of the best things about Russian style. I love ribbing because the stitches turn different ways and it's like an error check!
Do decreases or increases change at all in this method? I learned the Norwegian style knitting because I always crochet and liked the yarn in my left hand, but was naturally doing the purl stitches this Russian way, then found out I was doing it “wrong” so changed to a purl which has more movements for sure. I have just subscribed to your channel, I may have to re-learn again, but as I just started learning to knit this year it shouldn’t be too hard...
Hi Valerie. The increases are mostly the same, but decreases are different. All these variations are explained in the full course about Russian knitting. You can sign up at www.10rowsaday.com/russian-knitting Happy knitting :-)
This is interesting. I continental knit, but when I purl I scoop the yarn the opposite way you are showing. I’ll have to try it your way and see how I like it.
Myrna, thanks for the video! Have been knitting for a while now and trying out different styles to minimize wrist rotation. My mother was from Cuba and actually learned to knit through the back loops English Style and that's how I learned how to knit so now going back to my roots! Do you happen to have a pattern for the sleeves on the sweater that you're wearing? Have been looking for a pattern for that type of sleeve, a bell or trumpet sleeve for a long time and have not been able to find one. Thanks
Hi Lissy. It is interesting to know that your Mom used the Eastern knitting style, but held the yarn in her right hand. Another proof of the fact that each of us have our own knitting style :-) As to the sweater, it is called Facile Sweater. The pattern is at www.10rowsaday.com/facile-sweater The sleeves are actually straight, but they become wider at the bottom because the sweater is made of a fibre with good drape - bamboo or silk.
Maryna are all your stockinette swatches used in tutorials knitted in Russian style demonstrated in this tutorial playlist? Or are they knitted continental style as you show in your Continental knitting tutorial?
Even though the fabric looks the same whether it is knitted using the Russian or the Continental knitting styles, I always stay consistent when I make swatches for tutorials. If a tutorial is about the Russian knitting style, the swatch is knitted using the Russian knitting style. For tutorials featuring the classic Continental knitting style, swatches are made using that style. Happy knitting :-)
In Eastern knitting, this way of purling is offset by knitting through the back loop. By combining these stitches, the tension of the fabric is not affected.
Just mirror the instructions and work with the yarn in your right hand. In fact, when you knit the Russian way, you can work back and forth, like a knitting machine. This technique is explained in the Russian Knitting Simplified - a detailed online course about Russian knitting.
I knit the same way , i just have one problem- when switching from knitting in the round to knitting flat my stitches lean different way , is there anything I can do to correct that ? It is VERY visible when I knit sweater in the round and then do short rows thank you.
This one of the features of Eastern knitting - it results in twisted stitches when we work in the round. There is no remedy for that other than switching to the classic knitting when you work in the round.
@@10rowsaday I knit my socks just fine with russian style, the only thing that you need to change is which side of the loop you pick up, everything else is the same. It is very easy to alternate between not twisted and twisted stich.
@@simoroshka are you saying that purling in the round, instead of going into the front leg of the stitch from left to right, you go into the back leg from right to? if so that would be easy enough to remember.
@@marshafleming4165 Watch this youtube channel for Russian Speed Knitting. She goes beyond just knitting front or back back loops to understanding how a knit stitch actually works. How you know whether it is going to be a twisted stitch or not, knit or purl by how the stitch OPENS up for stitching. Channel sannyhawaii
That's right. In Eastern knitting, stitches sit on a needle with their right legs behind the needle, not in front of it. When we combine Eastern purls with Eastern knits, we get a fabric that looks exactly like the fabric formed by using any classic knitting style. Give it a try :-)
Not if you knit these stitches the Russian way in the next row. The tutorial about the Russian knit stitch is at www.10rowsaday.com/russian-knit-stitch Happy knitting :-)
