Here's something completely different. Baritone Tenor? The setup - Strings: 0.62, 0.40, 0.26(w), 0.16(p) tuned CGDA, C below normal low E on guitar. Watch RJ take this for a test drive getting sounds and tones you simply can't get on any other electric guitar.

Heh. I didn’t expect to see a question like this out of the blue. I’m not planning on using a bass guitar but rather using a cello to emulate this baritone/tenor guitar. The cello simply has more versatility in, well, at least being able to use a bow for single and double stops. But to use a cello like a smaller upright bass with the fingers while grasping the bow in the palm might make it work like: 1. A Lead/vocal harmonizer 2. Rhythm guitar 3. Drone making 4. As a secondary bass for making a two part bass line. I’m planning on releasing music employing full blown polyphony akin to what Bach used interluded with traditional songwriting: you start with the lead guitar, then the rhythm guitar/cello plays the same thing but a third/fourth below, then maybe a cello could play after that as a tenor, and the bass guitar plays the lowest voice before the traditional song plays out. In effect you get a song fuga. Perhaps even the drums could represent part of that structure if they’re tuned correctly. There’s also a surprising number of people making electric mandocellos from guitars.

I used to keep a short scale bass in gdae with a nonwound .018 gauge on top. I called it "baritone cello" tuning... so this is just a fretted electric cello. still, it's rad that stuff like this exists in the market.
@foljs5858
@foljs5858 8 лет назад
+jason fifi """ so this is just a fretted electric cello""" Not 100%, because even a shortscale bass with picollo strings will have a much longer fretboard and different tension. The sound of all such basses I've ever heard is distinctly more "poppy" than this.
@jasonfifi
@jasonfifi 8 лет назад
***** yeah, i didn't use "bass" strings for it. only the lowest string was big and fat. i've done it both ways, short-scale and standard J-bass scale, and on a J-bass, i tuned it to the same GDAe with an 18 non-wound E string.. but had a much beefier G and D strings. it had a more aggressive attack, which i think sounded kind of "poppy." the eb-0 scale length probably "needed" bigger strings, but it had a more guitar-like tone and tension, giving it less of an aggressive/sharp attack.
@TakeMeWithYer
@TakeMeWithYer 8 лет назад
+jason fifi I'm thinking of doing something similar with a standard scale bass. I'm confused, what guage did you use to get the gdae tuning for a guitar-like sound?
@jasonfifi
@jasonfifi 8 лет назад
TakeMeWithYer a slightly bigger A string for the G string, whatever D string you like from a normal set of bass strings, a slightly smaller G than usual for the A, and an 18 guage nonwound for the high e. on the short scale, i believe i used a 35-40ish for the A string. so, i believe that was a 90, 70, 40, 18 on my old jazz bass. the tension of the scale length gives it a lot of piano-like power in the highs and the butt still sounds like a bass.

@wolfwarren6376
@wolfwarren6376 7 лет назад
Hi there! I know this is a fairly old comment, but you peaked my interest. So, I do hope you don't mind. :) It really depends on how you look at it. If you are a violinist, than this would definitely appeal to you. If you're good with theory, the same theoretical notes (i.e. relating back to the one) are in the same places as on your violin. That would make it really easy to pick up for you (as would mandolin, as it is the same GDAE as a violin). If you are looking at this to start guitar only to move to a six stringed instrument, then this is not for you. Considering the tuning difference with this being in fifths and a six string guitar tuned in fourths (mostly), it would be far easier just to go straight to a six string guitar. Thanks for peaking my interest! Good luck!

Hey! I'm a bass guitarist looking for a second instrument to have fun with and your tenor guitars picked my intrest, but I have a couple of questions. This tenor baritone is it actually tuned lower than a regular guitar or just lower than a tenor guitar? Would you recommend I, as a bass guitarist, pick this one as my first electric tenor (I plan on buying an acoustic first) or should I try a regular electric tenor first?
@eastwoodguitarsofficial

@Morgan423Z
@Morgan423Z 5 лет назад
It's entirely different chords and scales, so it's like learning a new instrument in many ways. These tenor guitars are traditionally tuned in fifths, whereas the various ukuleles and standard guitar have fourths-based tunings. I do have a tenor guitar that I keep tuned in fourths (ADGC) using the middle four strings from a standard guitar set, but my fourths tenor's strings are A2 to C4. This guitar's range starts way lower than than that... I'm not sure what strings you'd have to use to get a fourths tuning on this thing.

You might be able to find a short scale bass that you can tune up with appropriate strings. Of course you'll have to deal with the string spacing. Maybe take a look at some hofner or clone instruments. They apparently have a tight bridge spacing and a 30" short scale. Might be a little longer than you want, but it could work okay.
@SMILEY.45

@@somepunkinthecomments471 Yeah when I’ve tried explaining it to other musicians they say “You mean a bass...just get a bass.” I don’t want the strings that spaced out, I don’t want the neck that wide and I need the bridge and pickups set up for an electric guitar, not a bass lol. @somepunkinthecomments471
@somepunkinthecomments471 3 года назад
@@SMILEY.45 I understand, I've played guitar, bass, bass vi, piccolo bass. Lemme tell you, if you can find a short scale bass with narrow string spacing, even though it will be wider than a guitar, it will suit you just fine, most likely. I started on guitar, then switched to bass, playing it "guitar like", and when I got a bass vi, I realized that a narrow string spacing actually limits what you can play. It limits how much attack you can get without hitting multiple strings, it makes playing drones near a fretted string difficult. All I'm saying is if you try to be picky, you might loose out on experiences that you might actually prefer, that you just have to get used to. But if you are dead set on the narrow guitar spacing, check out dashtick guitars. It might not be your cup of tee, but I think the stuff is cool. He makes custom stuff too. I have no experience btw.

@eastwoodguitarsofficial

+Ethan Padden Correct, the baritone has a longer scale length as it is set up to be tuned one full octave below the tuning of the regular tenor. What is a tenor baritone?
@davezanko9051
@davezanko9051 4 года назад
A guitar with a scale length about the same as a standard electric guitar, and the same number of frets, but with four strings tuned in fifths, just like a violoncello (but fretted and plucked, not unfretted and bowed like the viola family) or a mandocello (but only one string per course, not unison pairs like the mandola family). In that regard, the name "baritone guitar" is correct, as it's a baritone instrument like the cello, but the term "baritone guitar" is already widely understood to mean a six-string guitar with a longer scale length tuned halfway between a standard guitar and a bass (which itself is really a contrabass or double-bass, but I digress). Eastwood should have probably called this one a "guitarcello" to denote its similarity to a mandocello (they, not coincidentally, have about the same scale length.)

Tenor baritone makes no sense. It's an octave tenor guitar or a 4 string e-mandocello.
@cstarr3240
@cstarr3240 7 лет назад
I thought the same thing at first. But it kind of does make sense, though, admittedly, not a lot of sense. The only reason there is a "tenor" guitar is because it is tuned the same as a "tenor" banjo (which itself was a bit of a misnomer). So the name is more indicative of its family history than its place in the guitar line up. The "baritone" just shows that it is lower than a regular tenor. Considering a baritone guitar usually tunes A to A or B to B, and this is tuned a C below low-E on a guitar, even throwing in the "baritone" might be a tad misleading. A bass guitar is an octave lower than a standard guitar, so maybe this could have been a "bass tenor," or "tenor bass." Again, though, having two indications of pitch range is kind of funky. But, then again, I think that having a "4-string mandocello" might be ambiguous, as that could refer to an instrument with two courses of two strings, or a single two-string course and two single-string courses (like a balalaika with the A-string being turned into a course of two A-strings). I think you're right that a better name probably would have been "octave tenor," but that leads us back to the fact that the name of tenor isn't really indicative of its pitch range. Of course, there are always going to be mis-named instruments, like the English Horn (which is neither English, nor is it really a horn). Oh well.
@davezanko9051
@davezanko9051 4 года назад
@@cstarr3240 Yeah, the "tenor" guitar is really an alto instrument (as are the mandola and viola, which have the same tuning) unless one is tuning it to the low fifths "Irish" tuning. Apparently the use of "tenor" to describe those instruments is a British thing. Truth is comparing this to a regular six-string guitar for naming purposes is tough because It's a whole separate tuning family, with this being the cello of the family, and the tenor being the viola. (A four-string electric mandolin, which Eastwood also has as part of the Warren Ellis series, is the treble instrument, like the violin, with the bonus that it can be tuned like a ukulele). Personally, in keeping with the convention of the mandocello and violoncello (to use its full name), I would have called this a guitarcello.
