Appreciate your videos and candid review, I especially like the fact you point out that 30mS switch over time as a UPS may not be sufficient in all applications. There are other brands on the market for residential/small business applications offered by manufacturers who build UPS systems for large scale data center applications and they offer a switch over time of 12mS or less. For something portable and easy to use this looks like a great solution, however I’d still recommend an installed standby home generator if your budget can afford it. In my case I use a whole home generator (plumbed to my natural gas line) with transfer switch that handles power transfer automatically, complimented with a UPS system to power all the sensitive electronic loads that cannot tolerate the generator switch over time. A proper UPS system also cleans the power to your electronic loads which adds further benefit. It comes down to what you want in a backup power solution and your budget.

While I work on, repair or even build/design my own inverters and UPSes I will probably never buy a brand new power station (because I can do it way cheaper and can easily customize the final product for whatever i need without worrying about losing warranties) - EcoFlow products are pretty much the example of what modern, consumer grade power stations should work like. Their internals are pretty much all professionally assembled and designed, batteries are actually well protected and there is no dirty cheaping out on components unlike many other companies' products in my country. This, (along with their decent rarity in Europe) contributes to the fact that it's almost impossible to find a used or broken one on the market - which is a good sign for regular people! ... I've only ever had one for repairs, someone seemed to have connected an entire 450V string of solar panels into the input - soo that wasnt the fault of the manufacturer haha! Edit: also they use freakin' XTxx connectors that are actually usable and don't require being glued down to the boards to not get loose after a few seconds. This is probably one of the repair friendliest connectors there is!

I agree, it kills me to buy these lead acid APCs they all fail after 3-5 years cost $150-200. Even the little one here is a bargain but I know some people lose it over 30ms but I tried it on my mac and the network gear and had no problem pulling the plug without interruptions.

@@SilverCymbal Exactly! I have a lead acid UPS on my fiber/router. It lasts about 90 minutes. Then I switch to my lithium/camping battery and it lasts 14 hours! Seems like there's a market for WAY better UPSes.

There's a Norwegian who makes a power generator for indoor use. It uses ethanol to boil water and then the waste energy is used to generate 100w over 24v with a car adapter, so you could heat your livingroom and charge this device just by using some alcohol. That's in fact why I'm looking to get one of these power banks, just for preparedness. I had an indirect lightning strike a few years ago and went a week without power. Not fun when there's -15c.

I really wish they had the ability to limit charge percentage. This would allow the device to be used as a UPS while not keeping the battery at 100% charge. LiFePO4 batteries do have more charge cycles but will still degrade while stored at 100% charge.
@SilverCymbal
@SilverCymbal Год назад
There is good news with that. When plugged into the wall, it doesn't use the battery at all. This was the downfall with all Jackerys they ruined their own batteries if used as a UPS. These engage the battery at the moment of a power loss.

What I'm really curious about is can River 2 base model boil a water in kettle around 300-600 watts with X-boost. I know it lowers the voltage and this is noticable with something like heat gun or hair dryer by the sound of its motor but what about kettle? None of the youtuber covered this.
@jeschinstad
@jeschinstad 10 месяцев назад
Yes, it will just be slower than usual. A water heater is just something that is bad at conducting electricity, generating lots of waste heat. For electronics, like a computer, low voltage can be dangerous, but an electronic kettle won't care at all. There are far better ways to boil water though. Pure ethanol can safely be burned indoors, for instance. It only releases water and c02. I use it for extra heat and ambience in the winter. Incidentally, I have a device that let's me charge 24v/100w from boiling water and I'm looking to get one of these power stations for that perfect combination. Seems like great value for money.

If you can build your own and want to thats cool. The want to part is key, but you won't want to take it anywhere. The packaging is a big deal, shcok absorption too, and it won't be 1/2 the price, you will have no app, no fast charging, it won't take direct AC without a brick, it won't be a UPS. The few folks who have taken the time to price out all the component quickly find out economies of scale make these very affordable, Now if you compare it to a Bluetti with their C64 leftover screen, ac charging bricks and slow charging you might come closer but Ecoflow has kept up with stuff, and they aren't the only one, but the quality mfgs of these are getting harder to find. Zendure has made some pretty nice devices. Jackery basically died two years ago and there are about 50 junk companies making these now too. I would really love seeing someone do a DIY one that figured out a good way to package it up, but so far its just been milk crates and a battery, 1/2 the features, mostly hoping for YT views I guess.

UPS is the correct term.
@marcd6264
@marcd6264 Год назад
I've been enjoying your videos for years but take exception to this one. Specifically, this is NOT a UPS. The EcoFlow device can provide some features it has in common with a UPS however, it misses several critical features that you and many other promoters calling it a UPS don't discuss. You cannot use this on computer or servers if you expect communication between the battery & system. This data connection is essential for a true UPS to let the connected device(s) know that standby power is almost depleted & said device should gracefully shut down. Moreover, the EcoFlow DOES NOT restore power to its connected devices when wall power has been restored. This makes is nearly useless as a UPS for computers, servers and many other electronics. I understand the EcoFlow might be useful in some cases where these two aforementioned features are not a needed but these are features required in most cases where computer systems are connected to a UPS. For you & other RU-vidrs to promote this as a UPS is misleading & disingenuous. Perhaps I expected to much.
@SilverCymbal
@SilverCymbal Год назад
Thanks for the nice words, but let me address your critical points. I used to run a medical data center with a room sized UPS, loaded with batteries, electronics, etc. I am positive you would not doubt this was a commercial "UPS" it said ti right on the name plate. This giant model offered no communication with our servers (over 100 of them) Yes, it sucked and when we lost power we had staff that would gracefully bring every box down after a manual 15 minute grace period. The UPS could run for about 2 hours. We had to manually bring them up after too. At that time IP based agents just weren't common, my point here is even today not every UPS offers a communication port and that doesn't define a UPS function based on standard definitions. Yes its desirable, but how could it tell a router or x-box to gracefully shut down? But we agree about servers, this isn't built for those if you want graceful shutdown and startup. However it does work fine for all the gear I showed in the video and it absolutely provides power before, during and outage and after restoration. But it will not power up after battery is totally dead and restore the last known power state, but again that is also not a function on many consumer grade UPSs. I also tested this on my iMac and had no issues running the machine while pulling the plug to test. As I write this, that rack and iMac are both running through the Ecoflow. You used the statement misleading and disingenious which are pretty serious. I am not sure how lacking a communication port, and near instant switching dont classify it as a UPS. The definition of a UPS by Tech Target is" An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a device that allows a computer to keep running for at least a short time when incoming power is interrupted" Listen, I never said it was the best UPS on earth, but compared to by crappy APCs that I have run for years with lead acid batteries and measly 15 minute runtime, these are pretty good. And the UPS is an extra function of this device, not its core selling feature. The slower switching speed is not for servers maybe, but I don't think anyone is buying this for that market.

Sorry I dont see it but its fake, sadly scammers are doing that and copying peoples logo. I report every one of them and I know RU-vid is trying but they keep at it.

@@SilverCymbal yeah. I reported it as unwanted or commercial spam. I wasn't clicking it unless you confirmed. It was on the video that you sent out the water camera into the pond
