14:00 “… if you have any tips …”. My advice is, do not grind up everything. I give my dog raw, whole chicken necks, wings, drumsticks, etc. He crunches up the bones and the chewing and crunching cleans his teeth. I also give him big chunks of the cheapest, toughest meat I can find, also for the teeth cleaning. And raw beef ribs for the same reason. Chewing and gnawing is also good for a dogs mental health (so I have read); it releases serotonin. My dog often naps after a good bone gnawing session. BTW - There is a lot of good info about raw dog food on Paws of Prey channel.

Good info however, for few feeding, organ meat actually refers to secreting organs (liver, kidney, spleen, brain, sweetbreads) While heart, gizzards are organs, for raw feeding they are actually considered a muscle meat. Heart is especially good but use in small quantities. Fish is super important too. If the meal doesn't have fish, the Omega3 gel caps are easy to add. Overall, good job!

@@kimmendonca8536 There is a LOT of info online. Some is great and some is nothing more than "watch me feed my dog raw meat for the first time" and has major omissions. There are Facebook groups that are good if you're into group support. I did a RU-vid search and watched everything I could find. After a few I began taking notes. Dr Karen Becker has online newsletters that help explain lots of details but I found her it challenging to find specific things I wanted to go back and read again. I have found my dog does best on the Prey Model (frankenprey actually since I don't feed full prey items but pick and choose the specific meats I use - no fully dressed bunnies on my dog's menu). I`ll track down the most helpful articles and get back to you with websites. Honestly, the math can be a challenge (especially on shopping days) so there are sites with charts that help a lot.

Fat is indeed okey to add a bit as dogs do need it. They derive there energy from it. As some already pointed out heart and gizzard are indeed not the organ meats. You’ll want a secreting organ next to liver like kidney, spleen or testicles. Next to that you seem to follow the overal ‘ratio’ diet. I started there too 4 years ago and I know feed following NRC requirements. Still raw just I count everything to make sure I provide all the nutrient requirements. Especial to make sure I have a proper calcium - phosphor ratio. But also copper and zinc work together so I’ll make sure they’re in close range and so on. [A bit more complicated but worth learning]

I get 40 pounds of chicken necks from Food City. I remove the skin then freeze them. The dogs love them frozen because it cleans their teeth. I give my 100 pound GSD two in the AM two in the PM and two at lunch. My little mini doxie gets one tiny one at lunch. Their teeth are immaculate. The necks clean their teeth and they get the correct amount of bone.

What is the freezer life before the food loses its nutrients? And more importantly how long does it last in the fridge before it goes bad? Can you add supplements like vitamins to your base?
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
Leslie Caldwell I think the freezer life would be at least a month, although I’m not certain. I would say a week in the fridge would be fine. Dogs can eat meat that is a bit on the decomposing side. You can add any supplements as you see fit to this basic recipe. The supplements I added were the egg shells and sardines, but you can add an almost endless assortment of supplements as you see fit depending on your dogs needs.
@bettyshouna1685
@bettyshouna1685 5 лет назад
Leslie Caldwell I'm sure it would last a long time in the freezer, but then it would be taking up lots of space. I don't have a deep freezer so I wouldn't want to keep it in there for more than a couple weeks.

Do you have an actual recipe with portion measurements available? I have 70 lb and 22 lb dogs and would to make and freeze ahead. Thank you.
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115 4 года назад
Angela Gibson You can start with this simple method. Total daily raw starting portion = 70lbs x 2% = 1.4 lbs per day. After you have that number use the 80% muscle meat, 10% bone and 10% organ meat ratio. So 1.4 x 80% = 1.26lbs of chicken quarters (includes bone and muscle meat) and 0.14lbs of organ meat (liver, kidney, tripe). Of course it is easier to do this on a larger scale like a week or 2 weeks. The calculation is the same, but you would portion out 1.4lbs for a day once you mix it all up. For 2 dogs you can combine them for the bulk number. For example 70+22 = 92lbs of dog that would need 92lbs x 2%= 1.84 lbs a day for both or 1.5 and 0.5 if you want to round it up. 2% of body weight is just a starting point assuming your dogs aren’t over weight, and are healthy adults. If you have a young, active dog, add more food to the daily portions, if your dog is older or over weight use less. Hope that helps. If you need more detailed info you can do me on Instagram and I can give you my number to call.

Does this ratio sound right. 5:1:1:1; which is 5 parts fresh meat muscle, 1 part fresh bone (or even simpler, 5 parts meat on the bone), 1 part fresh organ meat (liver, kidney, heart, with fresh liver being the most important) and 1 part veg ?
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115 4 года назад
xlifewritex Sounds a bit heavy on the veg part. As long as you are around the 75-80% muscle, 10% bone, 10% organ you should be fine. It’s not like baking where everything needs to be precise. The idea is more to see how your dog responds, and seeing how their poops are. If you have a healthy adult dog that isn’t over or under weight then you are on the right track. There’s lots of variables depending on age, activity level and weight even seasons impact dietary needs. Customize your dogs diet over time and find what works for you. Think of this guide as a starting point.

Is it safe to just dive into a diet like this or a slow introduction. Does it cause diarrhea or significant changes in fecal matter?
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
Leslie Caldwell Great questions! I was going to cover these in my next raw food video. You should plan on transitioning to raw gradually over a week to allow your dog to get used to any new diet, especially raw. I prepped Mosley for a week before I went all raw by mixing in more raw each day and less of his kibble. There was no diarrhea that way. In terms of fecal matter there is a huge change. There is much less volume and his fecal matter is much more firm!

But they are supposed to get 12-15% of bone/minerals a day..this is where I get confused . Will a leg tight or chicken quater or just single chicken neck be enough for bone requirement? Hi Latesha, Without a lot of detailed information, I’d suggest trying a variety of simple, homemade combinations of BARF diet. Itchy skin is usually caused by an allergic reaction. Hi Charlyn, A good starting point for a young, highly active dog is about 2.5% to 3% of their body weight. Every dog is different, so adjust as needed. Hope that helps!

Hi. I truly don't believe in kibble as food. Grain or grain free, it's all overly processed, junk and doesn't even look like real food. Put some kibble in a bowel of warm water for about half an hour. Whatever has expanded in that bowel isn't and doesn't look like real food.

My question while my dog is eating raw, what if he licks us, can’t we catch salmonella or something. Especially right after he eats and licks us
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115 3 года назад
A dog licks lots of nasty stuff, all much worse than raw food. They lick other dogs privates, lick pee, clean their own privates, etc. If you are at all worried, avoid your dog licking you regardless of diet. Kibble also has salmonella risk as well. Best to read any kibble package. They advise washing your hands after handling.

Hi, great video! I’m picking up my Rhodesian ridgeback puppy from my breeder next week and the breeder has been feeding the puppy and mum kibble which is designed for mum and pup. I want to feed him raw home made food. Your video is great for a adult dog but I am confused and worried that will I be able to give my puppy enough nutrients and what ever else they need to grow up big and strong with the meal you just made. Because puppy food and adult food are different if you buy from a store. Is there anything more I need to add? Thanks a lot and would appreciate the help 😊

@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115
@thetorontodogwhispereraka-7115 4 года назад
Randeep Sanghera You need to give a puppy much more food because they are growing. An adult dog needs about 2% of their body weight, puppies need about 5% of their body weight till they are a year old. They don’t have the teeth to crush bones, so grinding the bones in a blender or grinder will help a lot. Later when they have their adult teeth you can give them bigger chunks of bone.

The Toronto Dog Whisperer AKA - Dog Behaviouralist ok so more food and make sure I crush the bones 👍🏽 thanks mate. Apart from that are there enough nutrients and all the other things a puppy needs to grow big and healthy in this diet? Why do you remove the fat? I thought it was very natural and important part of the diet?
@thefraug3827
@thefraug3827 3 года назад
Oh you still believe fat ingestion causes fat when it's eating simple carbs and sugar that make one fatty..which is why the high carb processed foods, starches, etc causing weight gain, NOT the Fat which is natural and good for the dogs. They certainly don't bypass that in the wild.

Disagree - I have a German Shepherd who weighs 120 pounds and no he is not fat, just very large. I feed him ½ raw (Dr. Marty's - cost is $323 per mo) and ½ kibble (Orijen - cost $40 per mo). What brand of raw do you use??? I would like to feed him 100% raw but prefer to not spend $646 per month!
@elenadejesus7489
@elenadejesus7489 2 года назад
@@deborahgood8185 hi Deborah. When fed raw, the dog or cat is healthier and less vet visits because they stay healthier. You can get chicken in bulk from Costco's, Sam's club, ext. That should be your base and takes up a nice portion of your raw. Adding other meat sources after that shouldn't keep you from feeding all raw since your primary meat is chicken. Make sure your chicken in bulk doesn't have any additives

jonathan McGovern The basic starting point is 2% of their body weight. So about 2lbs per day for a 100lb adult dog. If your dog is elderly or overweight, I’d start with 1.5 lbs per day and see how your dog reacts over a few weeks.
