A new puppy and newly planted garden meant installing a garden fence was another necessary project. From setting the treated 4x4 posts in concrete to framing the hillside with horse panel, I had a blast building this fence with my new employee/apprentice Isaac and Rigby Puppy is now safe and sound and away from my precious plants! I found another great use for the LED lights I used on the front gate, we used 2x4 horse panel sheets available at most farm stores, treated 4x4's and Behlen Country farm tube gates, which are fairly easy to hang, and the rigidity of the panels provide tons of extra support. This is a super easy, beautiful DIY fence project anyone with a shovel, a circular saw, a drill driver, bolt cutters, a hammer and some gumption can take on.

Anne - I'm going to show this one to my wife. She designed a fence exactly like this (except metal fence posts) and is planting Star Jasmine as her climbing vine. Knowing that you designed a similar fence will validate here design skills. You've been an inspiration to her and she now runs around the backyard with her own circular saw!

Beautiful addition to the farm! I love the lights on top as an added touch, I'm glad you were able to use them after all! The step down look you did with each panel was a great way to handle uneven ground. We're currently building a wheelchair ramp to the farm house for my dad and we just did the cement tamped in and allowing the ground water to saturate it as well. It worked out great for us too! A little tip for you Anne regarding connecting a chain to your tractor's loader bucket: weld one or two chain hooks to the top of the bucket so you can just hook the chain on instead of putting it clear around the bucket. Google chain hooks for loader buckets. They even make them especially for that purpose now. Loved the video as I always do. All the best!
@AnneofAllTrades

My bucket actually has those spots, but I get really nervous using them. I’m always worried I’ll pop a weld. It gives me so much more peace of mind to wrap it around, but it is a bit of a time suck.

Love the little Kubota, I think mine is 2 or 3 models up from yours, with the Backhoe attachment, makes a huge difference to doing stuff around the farm. You do your fence post pretty much the same way I do, it's so much easier, plus you don't need to mix it up on a board or wheel barrow, only I half fill with pre-mix, water and mix, then fill the rest of way up, and tamp as much as possible. I also Mill my own posts, then burn the post (Shugi-Ban style). A little hint for you when pulling out posts, use the tractor bucket set it about half way, use a chain attached, and with another person, have them wrap the chain around the bottom then stand back holding the chain so it has a little tension, then lift the bucket, with the other person keep the slack out of the chain, it makes it lock together and reduces the slippage, and the tension builds and pulls the post straight up so it can be used again, it's especially good for star pickets. Also those horseshoe nails I think you were using, close them up so they are a tighter U shape, it makes it easier to hammer them in. Leaving those wide, make them spread out when they are hammered in and makes it more difficult to hammer them in straight.
@AnneofAllTrades

Wish I'd been able to bring it with me! I'm in dire need of a tractor here, but I needed the $$ a little more while moving, and transporting it would have been a nightmare.

Finished product looks nice! I saw towards the end you had a shot where you were having trouble with the stringline getting in your way. Best advice I can give there is to set the stringline only about a foot up off of the ground at the high point. Then when you dig you turn to face the line looking down the stringline and hold the string out of the way with the outside of your lower leg. Stop every so often to check to see where your hole is in relation to the string. We always aimed for having about 1/3rd of the hole outside of the string and made our holes 3x the measurement of the post (so a 3" post would be a 9" hole.) Hope this helps.

@jessemanson3722

Whosoever it works but only going in one direction which is typical for a fence, doesn’t have a bolt either. I used rebar, your first post drill hole four rebar but only half way through first post, drill oh ends of cross rail, hammer rebar cut to desired to length into First post, fit cross rail onto rebar, drill hole all the way through second post and hammer rebar through post into second end of cross rail and repeat until finished. Use string line to level all holes before drilling.

I saw a video hack yesterday for posts. Drive 3.5" screws at an angle into post where it will be in concrete so post won't move. He showed it for handrail post installation but it was a clever idea to give strength to the post set. Love your fence! And your whole place and your gusto! Hard work but such a good life:) Have fun as often as possible while the work continues:)
