I used a product called “Rockite” which works well also. The silicone seems to be great also!

Rockite is *THE* way to go for both the fore and butt stock.

I would rather keep my rifle lighter then adding weight just free float the barrel do the lighten trigger make sure you're torque the barrel down and all of 4 of mine are MOA or under! Great Rifles. Thanks

To lighten my trigger, I just clipped about two coils off the original spring. Brought my trigger weight down to an average of 2 lbs.. For the stock, I cut up an old T-shirt, and very tightly packed the stock with the T-shirt and then, of course replaced the butt plate. I also filed and then sanded the forend of the stock to ensure the barrel was free floated then filled the honeycomb area with epoxy to stiffen the entire forend. Make sure you drop test your EMPTY CHAMBER rifle several times to make sure the modification to the trigger spring does not lead to an accidental discharge.

mine filled complete. I used a longer straw and smaller dia. and gently squeezed the trigger and it filled with no voids good idea.

During my Army career,I would use a pen spring to replace the sear spring on a M -60 machine gun. It would get through a fire fight.

I got a trigger spring from Mcarbo for my 1975 Winchester model 70 that factory spring was set at 12 lbs ? The trigger is now 3 lbs. I tried to adjust the factory spring down to 3 lbs, which it will do, however, it failed my drop test 10 of 10 times !!! In this test you cock the rifle and hit the butt of the stock, if the tigger fires, that's a failure !! It simulates dropping your rifle from a tree stand !! You Do Not want any rifle to fail a drop test. Especially since we often hand down a rifle to our children after we no longer want to shoot it ! Those are the last people on earth we want to get shot with a rifle we gave them as a family treasure !! The trigger spring from Mcarbo passed every drop test I gave the modified rifle ! I think the new spring was 12 dollars ! A much better shooting rifle plus safer that the original setup ! It took 10 minutes to replace the factory trigger spring ! I think that is money well spent !

As soon as I watched your video, I went ahead and did a trigger spring upgrade with a spring stiffness between a pen spring and the original. With the set screw in a safe position,(Not too much exposed) i managed to get a trigger pull of 1 pound 12 ounces. It feels like a Timney on steroid... I also ordered the mold making silicon compound kit RTV-2 to fill the stock and on top of it, will replace the recoil pad with a Limb Saver and hopefully will get rid of the .308 ass kicking recoil. Thanks for the inspiration, as simple as you made it seem, it really saved me a lot of grief.

I stuffed my stock with toolbox drawer liner. Same noise killing, less mess.

Put magpul stock on it,your groups will get smaller. Great video
@EverydayReloadingandShooting
A two port silicon mixture works better. It’ll fill up all the cracks and harden into a solid piece of rubber. Adds to pounds.

Just a suggestion, maybe if you filled the stock with bean bag beans and then filled with the resin, it would still be light but would form a honeycomb structure inside the stock.
@imjustadude
@imjustadude 2 года назад
I thought about several combinations or media to use. Resin is so thin initially, and not knowing if there were voids for escape, I went with something that would thicken up from the start. I like your idea!!

Never knew a 308 could recoil so bad. I filled my stock with caulk for weight n put a limbsaver on it. Now it's a Cadillac.

I just use of the spring I got from Home Depot. Everbilt Spring Assortment Kit 471 864. There are 4 of the same size with the original Ruger spring just lighter. Trigger pull now averages at 2 lbs😀😀

You inspired me. I filled my ruger american with that foam. Not sure if it will help with the mild 308 recoil but it does make it sound less , how do I say this? "shitty".? now maybe when O drill the holes for the cheek rest/pad it may not Crack whe ln I tighten it down..thanks..now I got to try that 2lb spring trick..I have a box of assorted springs...
@JKhogman_LTA

It wasn't a 2 lbs spring trick it was just over 2 and a half pound trigger and the stock spring is already roughly 2lbs 13oz fully adjusted. So your shaving 4 ounces and risking a field malfunction using a cheap spring. Not worth it in my opinion.

Dude- great video! The new spring I'm going to try for lighter trigger pull. I'm wondering if the silicone rubber adds substantial weight to the gun. I am considering the beanbag beans and a silicone rubber combination to fill the stock while not adding too much weight. This is a project for me to build a budget friendly quality hunting rifle. Does anybody have any experience with a Marcool scope?

Thank you, and I appreciate ya watching. That silicone does add some weight. But in my opinion it's very much needed. Those Ruger Americans are kinda "cheap". Not only are they hollow/loud, front heavy. Adding that weight in back balanced it, deadened sound and the silicone helps soak up the recoil. If it were a 300 blkout, probably not a big deal. The 450 Bushmaster kicks like a mule. So a lil absorbed recoil was welcomed, balancing the rifle happened (not my reason for filling the stock) and it really hushed it up (probably my primary reason for doing it). What caliber are you shooting?

Did the silicone make a difference with recoil ?
@imjustadude
@imjustadude 2 года назад
Yes it did. Those stocks are cheap hollow plastic with nothing there to absorb energy. The 450 BM is a beast of a round and any help you can get sucking up shock is beneficial.

That recoil with that plain hollow ruger plastic i cannot image the horrible recoil. No fun shotting it that 450 bush. I have 308 ruger 18 inch barrel and I just order my a boyds wood stock, for better look and a bit more weight

It's painful to shoot, by no means a plinking gun or round. Filling that stock did help a lot.
@SOSdoorgunner69
@SOSdoorgunner69 2 года назад
Hey Dude..If the 450 is a little stout fir a big guy like you. how about doing what us old trap shooters do. fill it with no.8 shot..lol maybe that will help. since you shoot so many shots at the game you hunt ..hate to see you suffer through the recoil.lololo
@imjustadude
@imjustadude 2 года назад
You must not own a Ruger American rifle. The stock is shit and the whole purpose of the modification was to deaden the sound and balance the rifle. If it helps soak up some recoil then I suppose that's a bonus but it wasn't the reason for the project. I shoot most all of my guns on a regular basis. I don't use this gun for hunting but thanks for your concern.

I have the go wild Ruger American in 450 Bushmaster, it came with a compensator from the factory and in my opinion has very mild recoil.I can put 20 rounds down range with no shoulder soreness. I am 5'10" tall and 185 pounds.
