I'm surprised to hear that people were upset about the lentil tofu being called tofu. I'm just happy to have many new ways to enjoy tofu now, just like there are nut milks and vegan meats and cheeses. So let's all relax about what we think things should or should not be called, because we get enough comments like that from non-vegans. I imagine there are some vegans who are allergic to soy who are absolutely thrilled to see this video, too...because eating tasty tofu bites is so damn fun! Many thanks for all of the amazing recipes. My husband and I love them!
Yes, I was surprised too. I always thought tofu referred to a process and the consistency of the end product, not only one way from one single item. Like you can make cookies from all kinds of flours and nuts. If at the end, it basically looks like and has a texture like a cookie, then you can call it a cookie if you like. I'm not making fun of anyone, I do understand there is a basic level of respect for something being its own thing and deserving of its own name is where some people are coming from though.
Not only that. But some of us omnis need to avoid soy due to past cancer issues. As well as those who went thru early puberty like my daughter thanks to soy.
Lentil Tofu is really not Tofu.. those are actually basics and authentic in many parts of the world, with specific names .. I'm not offended but it's not Tofu.... lentil Tofu is like calling tofu Soy Paneer.. Any Indian here will understand my pain 😂😂. I agree with Sandra Long's comment
This looks amazing! My mom lives with me and can’t eat soy, so this - and the lentil version - are much appreciated! And who cares what they’re called if they’re delicious? 🤷♀️ 😋
Best vegan channel out there! Always love being here. (Plus all the adventures, nice editing, beautiful Canada scenery and other fun loving humor with you and your lady). Thank you so much Derek! I loved the red lentil tofu, made some a few days ago. I cooked it in a pan with a little olive oil, but I try to cook without oil or without using added oil, and I thank you for that also. Not easy because cooking anything in oil, makes it taste 10x better lol... to me, and we've been taught to use fats for flavor and non-stick. I can't believe how easy this recipe is lol. Going to make the savory today, but you make that dessert bowl look crazy lol. Grateful for you. 3:33 what was that triple dressing combo? 😍. Peace and love.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment. So glad you like the content. Yes, whenever I see people cooking or making stuff with a bunch of oil, I always think 'they're doing it on easy mode', lol. The triple dressing combo was tahini, buffalo sauce and balsamic reduction.
Derek, OMG!!! I made these today and they were so delicious that my (major carnivore) husband requested MORE!!! Thank you so much for your recipes and help!!! I love getting so many ideas from you!
We really have so many choices when vegan! Thanks for these tofu options, they look simple and easy to replicate, delicious, too, especially, cinnamon bun flavour😁👍…
It's amazing isn't it!? I used to think it was going to be limiting but then all of a sudden I'm eating a way bigger variety of foods than when I was omni.
@@itiswhatitis141 I prefer to be able to taste my food. I haven't had any problems with the way any of it tastes. I was taught to put dressings and sauces on everything in the past. Now I am learning the taste and flavors without anything to cover them up. So far I haven't had any problems with how anything tastes and am enjoying my journey.
Making the savory first. We love chickpea flour pancakes so I'll follow that seasoning-onion, garlic, turmeric, s/p, nutritional yeast and sliced scallions.
Gonna try both for sure! I have been experimenting with the lentil version since last week and I am addicted! I make the recipe plain but toss the cubes in spice mixes (bbq, tandoori, greek) and they make the perfect healthy snacks. They also reheat very will in a convection oven. Can't wait to try the chickpea version!
Hey Derek, I’ve enjoyed this under the name panelle- an Italian (Sicilian) version made with olive oil and Parmesan . I sub lots of nooch 😂. There’s also a pizza(ish) dish called socca. This one you mix the chickpea water mixture and let it sit, then get a pan super hot in the oven and pour the batter in- i top with artichoke hearts. Both are awesome!
Hi! I've been making socca as an easy and fast weekday breakfast for years. It's absolutely addictive. Sometimes I spice it up with black pepper and either rosemary or oregano. I didn't know about the other one, I'll have to try it out!
If you’re interested in making another version, the brand, Foodies, makes Pumfu (pumpkin seeds). I love it, but it’s very pricey, so if you can figure out an efficient way of making it, I would love it. I can’t have soy, so I’m excited to try this! Thank you!! 😃
hi love your Burmese tofu and to share - I freeze the chilled cubes - then just get out the number of cubes I want for a single meal and they air fry straight from the freezer :-) thanks again !!
The texture looks even more interesting than tofu🥹🌱 just bought some chickpea flour a few days ago and need some recipes😌🙈 could you try and make a chickpea flour pizza crust, I‘d love that💪🏼 thank you for the amazing, free recipes✨
Just loving these tofu alternatives. Easy and tasty - can't wait to try the dessert version, we don't eat much dessert. I am thinking cut them a little longer, cook, then dip in dark chocolate, sprinkle with crushed hazelnuts - kind of a play on ladyfingers dipped in nutella.
Hello - I absolutely love your channel and all the recipes. The food is made with so much passion and enthusiasm, plus your presentation exudes such positivity it is infectious. To top it all off, no animal was killed in the process. The best - can't get better than that. Lots of love to you and all that you do to promote cheer and well being. 💕 😊
I love the ideas you come up with! “I’m never eating hummus again.” 😂 I look forward to making the both versions but I’ll make the savory one first. I LOVE salads! 🥗 This could be a great intro food for my coworkers who question my WFPB way of eating.
I‘ve made the lentil one twice since the vid, and it was so delicious and convenient. Definitely going to try this one too! I‘m sure the kids will be thrilled with the sweet version😉💪🏻
What type of Ice cream was that? Type of vegan ice cream? I'm not gonna lie those tofu Bites looks scrumptious. The last ones look like the definite Winner!!!!
People getting upset about what can be called tofu or not are simply hilarious. TO-FU in the Chinese language refers to "bean/legume" (TO) and "food of a soft/ pasty texture" (FU). Dahl / lentil tofu, in that sense, can be called tofu imo. Lentil is 扁豆 and it's still legume/bean (TO). It's soft and bouncy (even better)! Yes the majority of tofu products are made of soy. But you've got tofu variations across different cultures such as the Japanese tamago dōfu with egg content in it. If it's got TO (BEAN) and it's SOFT (FU), then it's TOFU to me. It's absurd when people claim "oh you cannot call it this or that" when it seems that they don't know what they're talking about...? I know making tofu yourself involves all the steps it's a long procedure, but bruh there're just many different ways to make things with a different ingredient! ps. btw bean curd = tofu, not sure why it's becoming a term referring to tofu before being tofu..
Dang, I think I'm going to have to buy an air fryer! Every video I see you using it, makes me want to try out all the foods you make in it. And based on your reaction.. I'm SO wanting to try the sweet cinnamon ones!!!
First time watching your video and you just have nothing but +ve vibes! Love the recipe and more importantly love your energy and excitement to explore new recipes! For all those puritans defining what is tofu and what's not and getting upset over it , please get a life! 🙏
Love this idea! Thank you for sharing! I was looking forward to trying your kind of “bowl in bowl” marinade method, then your lentil tofu and now your chickpea tofu! You have so many great ideas! Really appreciate your channel, got your recipe book. At the beginning of my WFPB journey, and you’re making it really easy and interesting! Thank you!!! ☮️🌎🤍🌱
Going to try the sweet one first with date paste. I may add it at the beginning of cooking and add less water. I think if I add date paste at the end it may have too much liquid and not set up right.
I remember the tofu egg salad that you made a while ago. Since i cant eat soy, might get creative with this and try that recipe with chickpea flour. Thank you!!
Thank you so much for this recipe! I can’t eat soy, so I’m very appreciative of this recipe! Also, I just watched your video that came out today (11/4/23), on how to make black bean tofu. I will definitely be making both of these recipes. Thank you so much for these recipes Derek!!!
Another fabulous recipe video. They both sound great. Recently, I made your red lentil tofu & I was amazed at how good it was & how much I got out of 1 cup of red lentils, so economical. I didn't use spices but will be making it again with spices next time. The Air fryer gave me the best flavor & was great in my summer rolls (along with caramelized onion, grated carrot & cabbage). Thanks again Derek.
My Wife lives on the border of Burma and Thailand, so many amazing Vegan dishes. In Chiang Mai the Vegan Burmese places are insanely good and have natural ingredients even my wife can't say in English. If u can ever make it to the J festival in Phuket Thailand, highly recommend it. Oh and all the foods and dishes we have in her village and in the City are from .75 to 2.50!
Toss the cubes in a breading mixture before air frying. I use nutritional yeast and bread crumbs seasoned with a garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. It makes a nice crispy coating when air frying this or the lentil "tofu".
Omg this looks so incredible…. Gonna make this for me and my omnivore friends to blow them away with yet another plant based bomb delicious dinner… thank you Derik!!
THANK YOU!!! I have a lot of chick pea flour and needed some recipe ideas. Thank you so much for the ideas! They all look amazing! Can't wait to try them all out!
Can I use raw or canned chickpeas and pulse it in a blender? In my country chickpea flour is really expensive, but raw chickpeas aren't, they're like 3-4 dollars for 2 pounds. A pound of flour is 10 bucks. It's expensive because our average salary is 500 bucks. I am not from the US.
Greetings from sunny South Africa. WOW Derick this recipe is totally awesome. You are valuable and precious. Thank you so so very much. Your passion and commitment is commendable. 😍
Glad for this recipe . no soaking to delay the process. Thanks for sharing Derek. Enjoy all your recipes. Now I can go back to see your soy tofu recipes and sub.
I just finished watching the video, it's probably my third or fifth time watching, but I just made savory tofu. I will let you know how it turns out tomorrow.
You can make this with regular chickpeas, similarly to the way you did the lentil tofu! Soak dry chickpeas for 8 hours and then follow the exact method you did before. Blend, cook, refrigerate. Give it a try, it's fantastic!
@@Simnettnutrition Turned out great on First (real) try! Lot of Italian, Cayenne, Garlic. Perfect with Salsa. Before using canned and grinding was not a good idea! Note: If boil made thick - whoa! Perfect for Gravy and Biscuits! Tomorrow is chickpea omelet (scant baking powder)
Wow, recipe looks simple and delicious!! Just found your channel. Menu for tomorrow just changed!!!!

I love chickpea tofu! I've been making it for years. Part of the addition is Better Than Bouillon chicken. Then I’ll slice and fry it up with seasoned bread crumbs and make chicken chickpea tofu Parmesan served over pasta. I made this dessert version and it’s OUTSTANDING! Thank you for such a great idea!!
I’m definitely looking forward to trying the savoury first. Then, hot on the heels will be the sweet, obviously!! Thank you for sharing your fabulous recipes. xxx❤
