Today we show you how to make these incredible chickpea fries and some vegan tzatziki to go with it. This combo is on another level! Both are pretty simple to make and extremely tasty. It would make a great appetizer if you are having people over that would please any palate! We both actually couldn't believe how delicious this combo is.
Have you ever had chickpea fries?
Chickpea Fries recipe
Ingredients:
2 cups water
1 cup chickpea flour
1 tsp olive oil
1/2 tsp salt
Optional spices:
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
Directions:
1. Pour 1 cup of water into a medium sauce pan along with olive oil and salt and bring to a boil.
2. In a separate bowl, add remaining water, chickpea flour, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Whisk together until mostly smooth.
3. Add the chickpea flour mix to the boiling water and turn down to a simmer (medium heat), stirring constantly until it gets very thick. It will take at least 5-6 minutes.
4. Spread the mixture to your desired thickness on a non-stick baking tray or silicone sheet and allow to cool.
5. Once it’s cool, cut into fries and roast at 400 f for 20 minutes, flipping and baking for another 5-10 minutes until the edges turn golden brown and the fries are crispy.
6. Serve hot with your favourite dip!
Vegan Tzatziki
Ingredients:
1/2 cup unflavoured/unsweetened vegan yogurt
1/2 a lemon, juice
1 garlic clove
1/4 cup of soaked cashews (1/4 cup before soaking)
2 tbsp chopped fresh dill
1/4 of a cucumber, grated
1-2 pinches of salt
Directions: 1. Blend the yogurt, lemon juice, and cashews together in a blender until smooth
2. Pour into a bowl and stir in the rest of the ingredients until well mixed.
3. Serve immediately or chill it in the fridge (this helps it thicken up).

Thanks for Sharing ❤️, just wish I had been raised vegan or known sooner!!! It's such a liberating feeling and so healthy ❤️ Was a bodybuilder in my younger days and ate a high protein diet (was so programmed to eat animal products). It caused me so many problems. Been vegan now about 6 years and vegetarian before that a few years.... so happy for the change!!!!!

I'm from Turkey and we also have tzatziki (we call it cacik) and I can recommend adding in a bit of mint (dried or finely cut fresh) and it takes it to a whole new level, you guys should try it!

OMG so I made them and they're sooo good!!! Instead of adding salt to the boiling water I added about a half tsp of "no chicken" vegan bouillon to put a little flavor in there(i think the bouillon had salt in it). Its good! and I realized I had a pizza cutter to slice the dough into 'fries', it worked perfectly. :)

Hi there Derek! Thank you for my country's recipe! Just a thing though: tzatziki is better if you grate the cucumber in a separate bowl and you squeeze the water out of it ;-) Try it, believe me it's worth it!

Hallo Derek and Crystal! Thank you so much for another tasty recipe video! I´m Greek and I have some suggestions for the tzatziki portion of the video: 1. You could grate the cucumber in a towel and squeeze the water out before adding it to the sauce to get a firmer end product. 2. You could sub lemon juice with white or red wine vinegar. 3. You could use a vegan greek style yogurt or a vegan skyr style yogurt to achieve the right consistency in your sauce. I have been making vegan tzatziki this way for a long time and it is always delicious! Sending you love and wishing you all the best!

Agreed about removing excess water from the grated cukes - also helps to use the salt on the cukes prior to pressing the water out.

This is so so similar to something we make in Sicily called “panelle”. It’s exactly the same process, but we also add parsley to them and cut them in squares to then dip fry them. We have them inside a soft bread roll with a spritz of fresh lemon juice and it’s amazing 🤩

Genoese panissa is just like what we see in the video: it's either eaten when the pudding solidifies, seasoned with oil, salt, pepper, and red onion. (served warm in winter, or at room temperature in summer). Or you chop it up into 'French fries' shapes which are then deep-fried. Traditional and widely available street food.

For people looking for something closer to the ORIGINAL, here is my Greek recipe: Alpro Quark, 2-6 cloves garlic, two table spoons vinegar, one cucumber (peal it, grind it up and then press it to remove as much water from it as possible) , extra virgin olive oil, salt. If you don't want to use alpro soaking and blending sunflower seeds is also possible!

I mean, even before I clicked on the video I knew this one was going to be awesome but having watched the first 30secs now, I really want to make these asap! Chickpea flour is so so versatile - I use it for béchamel, omelettes, pancakes and quiche filling. I have also seen people make Burmese tofu with it and the concept is pretty much the same as for you fries but you leave it at the cooled-down stage and then fry it or simply cube it for various dishes. Having said that, fries sound AMAZING because anything crispy is just 10x better :D Thank you guys for this fabulous recipe!

I make falafel and tahini sauce on a frequent basis, but I've never used chickpea flour before. I think these fries would work well with falafel seasoning and honestly, this vegan tzatziki sounds way better than one made with plain Greek yogurt (of which I don't care for). Thanks for the recipe!

Me too! But recently, because I am vegan for ethical reasons as well as for my health, I am sad to say I eliminated cashews entirely from my diet because they come almost exclusively from a part of Vietnam where slave labour is still used and the work is very labour intensive and in all good conscience I can't do it. I make vegan yoghurt too because I'm addicted to fiery vegan curries and that Almond Cow Machine which costs as much as those indispensible high power blenders was half price on Black Friday. Don't know if you are interested but almonds .... i leave the skins on the machine does the rest but soak them overnight not sure if that's necessary ... are naturally full of calcium no additives god knows I eat lots of tempheh and tofu so without trying to be self-righeous it tastes way better as a beverage and yes after soaking the skins come off reallly easily and I'm ok with the result for vegan yoghurt. Not sure you can get Forager brand in Canada. Things due to covid 19 are a bit weird now; I go to an Asian market and across the street a regular grocery store not bad but you never know. For anyone struggling with finances; the market I frequent leaves veggies still ok, mostly; they cost next to nothing and I use them for stock and soup. The only other thing I eat less of is avocadoes .... love guacamole but agree with gojiman that stuff on toast is sort of strange ... to me but once again; Mexico; drug cartels; Chile; wiped out all the local farmers and destroyed water resources. California eats its own produce which leaves South Africa. ..... What can you do? And who can fail to love Simnett and his Crystal????? I have mild MS not a big deal; so glad can swim again still get an hour in with my dog but of course dream of being able to be as positive and fit as that loveable couple...... PS I tried a chickpea flour homemade bread with sunflower seeds I am NOT a baker didn't even have the right utensils just shaped it; essential irish soda bread it was brill. Will comment with recipe next time this was a too long comment!!!

Thank you!! I made this for supper tonight as a try out before making it for Christmas Eve appy's. Loved it and I can definitely see it being a once a week meal. I could only find oat plain yogurt, and I used hemp hearts instead of cashews, because my SIL is allergic to nuts. It turned out fine, a little on the runny side, but still very tasty. Also, I omitted the oil and they were just fine. All oil is a processed food.

Hey! Nice recipe :) another way of presenting chickpea fries is by making Sokka/Farinatta. This definitely reminded me of Sokka.

Left a really long comment about other things and definitely will try this one. I found a version of vegan Irish soda bread and it's all chickpea flour and a flax egg with sunflower seeds on top ... I didn't even have the right shaped thing to put in oven just let it rest a bit shaped it and it was great. AND of course best warm but can toast it. As soon as I relocate link will leave on your site. Love you guys, inspirational!
