Easy Cymbidium Orchid culture and care for the different seasons. In this video I tell you how I get my Cymbidiums to re-bloom year after year with detailed instructions. #orchids #orchidcare #houseplants
Brad thanks for your help. I found the culprit ! it was a beautiful green caterpillar ! I removed it and cleaned the plant as best as I could. It seems to be doing much better since then. Again thanks for taking the time to reply.
Hi Steve, my orchid flowers start to get yellow now after 7 weeks of flowering, it is inside and sometimes the sun gets a bid warm in the corner in the kitchen, water it once a week. Thanks for all the tips. ( Beautiful flowers ).
Dear Brad, I watched all your cymbidium care videos several times over, it certainly worked, my 7 cmybs are all about to bloom. Been at it for 2 years now, but one thing remains a puzzle: when the flower spikes are about 20 cm long and starting to protrude from the husks, how moist should the medium be? Moist to the touch on the surface at all times? Or left to dry up before next watering? I observed that every time I water them, the buds accelerate their maturation; also, pseudobulbs that have two flower spikes tend to shrink somewhat as the spikes grow and mature. I guess the difficulty here is the notion that while blooming, the plants are in fact in their resting period. So: while about to bloom and while blooming, is it dry to well-watered, or constantly moist, or constantly dry?
Hi Anita, I use a liquid fert, doesn't seem to matter much which kind. 10-10-10 works. Number one reason orchids don't bloom, not enough light. I give mine full sun, even in summer. The leaves should be a light almost yellow/green if getting enough light. If the leaves are a dark deep healthy looking green... Not enough light.
I will definitely try the spring sun. I'm in Calif and I only had about a half dozen of my yellow bloom. None of my other colors bloomed. Will set all chms in a sunny alleyway that I have. Btw mine are in potting soil and seem to be okay with that. With our restrictions on watering the plants don't dry out as fast.
Hi Chantal, sounds like woodbugs to me. I would get a pair of tweezers and put the orchid in the sink and fill the sink with water so that the entire pot is underwater. All of the bugs will come running to the top, be ready with your tweezers and pluck them out as they appear. see what you find!
Hi Brad. I'm new to the Orchid world so I really appreciate all that I learn from you. Thank you. I live in Miami Florida so it's hot and humid here all the time and we don't really get cold winters. It really only gets as low as 70F in the winter. I got my first Cymbidium orchid 3 months ago and I'm learning (mostly from you) that i have been over watering it (I was soaking it once a week.) I have had a lot of dying bulbs which i'm learning is probably from rot because I was over watering. Now i'll water it much less often and put it in more direct sunlight. So, now that I have rotted bulbs and probably also rotted roots should I re-pot it and remove all the dead or should I leave it alone since you said they like to be crowded. ....but they probably don't like to be overcrowded with death.... Not sure what to do to give it the best chance to recover. THANK YOU!!!
They r beautiful..i am jealous! lol I have the reddish one and bloom only that 1x when i brought it home. Lots of green been growing for the past 2 years and no flower spike. I live it out on my pouch in the summer and away from direct sun since i am facing the southwest, so sun is very strong. About October, i bring it bk indoor. I am not much of a fertilizing person but i give it 3 month food pellets. Also can you tell me about fertilize the plant???..thnx!
Hi Brad, Thanks for the very helpful videos and showing your beautiful plants. I received a 6 year old Cymbidium as a gift that is gorgeous, but I'm new to orchids and am terrified of killing it. The plant is currently in bloom and indoors. You mentioned watering when the potting material starts to feel dry to the touch, but this plant's root base is so big, I can hardly see any potting material in the pot at all anymore - so it's hard to tell if it's dry! I'm currently soaking the plant with a spray of water for ~30 sec every 5 days or so. Do you have any other tips on correct watering conditions? Also, would you suggest moving to a larger pot if it seems like the root base is taking up to whole pot? Thanks a lo! Sara
l live in Houston, TX & have a beautiful green plant indoors, but no re-blooming. If they need that cooler weather at night to bloom, what can I do living where cool nights are few & far between?
I purchased my first Cymbiduims a few months ago. I repoted them and I have gotten quite a bit of new growth. I noticed when I purchased them that there are a number of gray old bulbs in the center. They seem to clearly be dead. Should I remove them?
Hi. I've gotten some black spots on my Cymbidium flowers. I've just taken them inside since the temperature has gone done close to 1 degress at night. Could the black spots be because of the cold?
Last year I split a large cymbidium. This spring (now) as soon as they get new leaf growth they get brown. I water about once per week and they are in an east face window. What is the problem?
Hey Brad! I want to buy cymbidium myself, but In Lithuania they are like 30 euros each (about 60 dollars) and they are so freakin huge. . . should I buy? would it be forth 30 euros? how do you think? I want your opinion because I don't know what to do, they are big in my store they are like 2 meters high and about half a meter long, so Should I buy it or not? thanks :)
Hi Brad My cymbidiums seems to have some kind of insect eating the leaves and the blooms, it leaves some kind of dark little round "excrements", at least I'm guessing it is that, all over my plant. Do you know what is going on and what I should do ? Thanks for helping !!
Your videos are very good, but I have to say that you record them with very very low volume, I am never able to see and listen from my phone. I think it will work better if you use a microphone as many people who has channels in RU-vid. Thanks.
If I have brought my orchids in side to early (just realized I have after watching this) can I put them back in my greenhouse or shall I leave them ? Also I have potted a few into very large pots but they now have new growth shall I leave them or put them into a smaller pot? Cheers, Dee (inexperienced orchid grower)
Hi Dee, I'm a big fan of small pots if I can help it. The center of a big pot rots out every time for me. I'd put the plants back in the greenhouse, as fall hits the cooler nights help induce winter spikes. Not to cool though. 50F+ for most works just fine.
hi brad I have some questions I have 2 cymbidium orchids im keeping them inside how much water and how many times a week should I water them ?also I live in ca. and the weather here were having it changes drastically one day is hot and windy the next is cold weather than u
mona renteria it really depends on the mix and the root system of the plant. It is ok to let them dry out slightly. in the summer I water daily and winter bi weekly. stick you finger in the mix and see if it is still moist or get a feel for how heavy the pot is before and after watering.
Black spots could be do to a few things bacteria, over fertilizing and even water spots. If the spots are close to the tip of the leaves you could just cut the tip off.
The pictures are excellent, but your audio is extremely low volume & substandard quality. I've had to turn it up to 11! & still have been guessing at what 80% of the speech is on Chromebook and pc ...
