Easy DIY 4-way speed selector for tape decks (walkman) + performance

Tape decks! They are all the rage today! Time to finish my little DIY project that I started 4 years ago and to put it into a housing.
This 4-way speed selector lets you "save" 4 tape speed settings and switch between them. It also has a tape stop feature that ... well ... stops the tape. It is quite easy to build once you have all the parts. You need:
4 x potentiometers 500 Ohm
1 x 4-way rotary switch
1 x push-to-close button
soldering stuff and housing
For the performance part: As described, the top walkman has a continuous drum beat (not yet a tape loop) for which I recorded all high hats on the left channel and all beats on the right channel. With the mixer I can then blend both parts together. I needed a L/R splitter and mono-to-stereo adapters even though the Dich studios mixer is mono (dual mono). The drone is just a continous minor key tone that then gets sped up and slowed down with my selector. I made the sound in Propellerheads Reason.
If you have any questions, just ask!

Dude. Like. Okay the selector is cool, but I'm more impressed with the idea to use the stereo field as two separate mono recording channels for percussion segments using a splitter. That would've never occurred to me in a million years. GENIUS.

Why thank you! *blush* Actually, it is how 4 track recorders work. But those also read and write the "backside" of the tape so you get the 4 tracks!

@bonesthenorthwoodswarriors1854
Major noob question here, what is the little black box connector thing that you attached to the walkman itself to hook the solder points up to the external controller called? Also, what are the 2 prong things called that you insert into said box called? Please help!
@AABattery

Hey, these are called Dupont Connectors. Basically just 2 plugs and 2 sockets so I can unplug the controller. Instead you could just use 2 wires soldered to a potentiometer to control the speed.

This is interesting...what led me here was remembering a tape deck my ex's friend's boyfriend brought back from Germany when he came back from serving in the US Army, early-mid 80s. It was part of an entire sound system- turntable, tape deck, eq, speakers, etc. (Pioneer, I think...) But the deck had speed adjustment, you could speed up or slow down the tape playback slightly which made for interesting listening esp. when intoxicated lol! Does anyone know of someone selling this type of equipment now, or how to modify one?
@AABattery
@AABattery 3 года назад
Hey, thanks for stopping by! There are quite a few portable tape decks with adjustable speed knob. They were mainly used for learning languages or practicing an instrument. Others have a small hole for a screwdriver that lets you adjust the speed. Or you go bigger and get a 4 track machine. You can just search eBay for tape deck with pitch / speed control. I'm sure you will find something.

Does your circuit basically just introduce resistance in the wire towards the DC motor? I'm trying to do something similar with a dictaphone
@duon44
@duon44 2 года назад
Another question, I've been trying to wrap my head around it while also looking at the schematics of the board but I can't figure it out. Is your button just shorting the signal so that it doesn't power the motor? If so, couldn't that mess up the board somehow? If I understand correctly your circuit is basically in parallel with the built in speed control pot, so I don't understand how a normally open switch could stop the tape over the same wires. Any help is appreciated
