Floating shelves can enhance any area. For less than $10 you could make 3 all of these. The beauty of this is you can make them with no hardware.

Completely agree! Mine didn’t turn out “perfect”, but that was more due to the lumber, definitely not due to the instructions! One thing that I would recommend is to do the process as the video shows: In the SAME order! I did the cuts as well as all of the drilling, countersink, safety pilot holes, etc. at one time as well as sanding the dowels. I did this because I knew that I was having back surgery in the next few days and I wanted everything to be ready to go when I felt like finally hanging the shelves... I had to go back and re-do a bunch of things due to this...(again- totally MY fault 100%). But the biggest pain was that I didn’t sand down the dowels enough...”lightly sanding” them was NOT what I considered lightly! Took way more sanding than I would have thought to get the actual shelves to easily slide on and off! So, if you decide not to do in order of the video/instructions...be forewarned!

The tools required for this can be gotten for around as much as you’d pay for the shelves, Pre-made. BUT, you can use the tools for further projects :) Realistically all the tools you need is a drill and drill bits. You can hand sand it, and have it cut by the store, or spend $30 on a circular saw :) definitelyblook into a cheap drill and circular saw. You could prob find at a garage sale for cheap, too! Heck Facebook garage sale sites. They sell for next to nothing at garage sales and things bc people don’t typically go there for tools

Very good method for making floating shelves!!! After a lot of research I decided on this method and it worked great. A couple of things to keep in mind, my home is a older home and has lath and plaster walls so they are not 100% flat and true so I had to do some minor sanding of the attachment bracket, secondly drill the holes before cutting to 1 1/2", I forgot and was a bit of a pain. I ended up making the 1/2" dowels a bit longer, they extended 4" into the shelf. I went with a routered ogee edging on the top of the shelves to get rid of the rounded edge of the 2X6. I plan on making more shelves.

I don't understand why to put the screws in the dowels. Just to stain it? But then you take them out when you mount the shelf?
@suzannereed6645
@suzannereed6645 4 года назад
Jessica MacMurtrie to hold the shelf in place once mounted. With woodworking, oftentimes you do a lot of construct/deconstruct before you have your final product. In this case, you want to have all holes drilled before you stain/varnish.

@@suzannereed6645 Right. Thanks! I get it now, he just didn't really talk about putting a screw in the dowel, then removing it when hanging it up, then replacing it after the shelf is up. And since this was my first woodworking project, I was confused at first, but it makes sense.

Seriously you guys who don’t own tools, go buy a $10 hand saw and a $20 used drill. I own some really good tools but there are so many ways to build something. No one goes out and buys a woodshops worth of tools in one outing, you slowly build a collection over many years. The tools you buy for this project will come in handy in the future, plus you’ll get a better shelf and pride in your work

Harbor Freight has really great prices if you only need one or two of these tools. I bought an amazing 5” orbital sander for $26. Once you buy it, you can tackle so many projects. Same thing goes for their drills, bits, clamps, etc. You might spend $100-$150 on tools but then never need to purchase them again (or at least not for a long time).

Blows my mind people complaining about tools... in my household I grew up watching both my parents tackle everything they could by themselves and as soon as I moved out have a basic set of tools was on my list because you obviously will need them soon or later for your furniture. Seriously if you watch a DIY video and don't expect tools to be involved you better watch those craft ones for 10yo that put hot glue on everything. lol

Tried this DIY video and same issue with wobbling and sagging. I even installed screws in studs instead of drywall so that shelve would be more sturdy, but still same issue. This shelve seems easy in video, but video nowhere shows that two screws on horizontal axis actually are not capable of preventing sagging and wobbling on vertical axis. This shelve is decorative at best and can't hold anything heavier than toilet paper. Will be going to home depot tomorrow to get right angle bracket. So total bill turned out to be ~$100 for 3 shelves. I totally regret cutting the board in two parts as brackets don't need that.

To increase the weight limit slightly, add more dowels, and place the screw into your studs 2/3 or even 3/4 towards the top of the bracket (not in the centre as he did in this video). Caution!!! Make sure you drill guide holes and straight ones. The closer you get to the edge, the more likely you are to split the wood. The logic on the strength by screw placement.., and any other engineer types feel free to argue, but! The lower your screw in the bracket, the more prone it will be too bending. You have less distance from the screw to the bottom of the bracket to resist the bending moment applied to the screw. If you have it higher, I'm pretty sure you decrease the bending moment on the screw, and the wood would pull on the screw instead of bending it... If that makes any sense ...
