In This video I show you how I make some very simple shelves with DIY brackets all out of scrap wood. This is to be able to accommodate all of the new things coming into this studio space I have from my other shop.

I typed "how to build a simple shelf" and got a bunch of floating shelf vids. This is Actually simple, thank you.

Oh btw you can make a redneck countersink with a larger drill bit if it matches the screw head. It's arguably NOT actually a countersink, but some people don't got time for a fancy bit, but still want a fancy fit 😉

@@somethingiswrong1916 - The sheer amount of completed sets on one shelve, adds more weight then you'd think. I'm talking one shelf with the full prison, fire station, airplane, ranger prison, swamp prison, boats, cars & more. It adds up.... smarties pants 😉 But I see where you're coming from.🤗🇨🇦 Studs are my favorite. When the neighbour's washer is a rockin, they don't move! 😂😂😂

@@somethingiswrong1916 but kids like to hang on shelves, so they really need to be secure. Not that you want them to do that, but safer to plan for it anyway. Or for the Lego boxes just not to fall on some kid’s head!

Very clear presentation! I didn't know some of the terms -- like "mitre" and "joiner" and "bead" -- but I looked them up. I realize that, in my doing shelves, having a driller would be a good idea. I am accident prone, so I have to think about that. I've done a few smaller shelves already. Thanks!

your shelves are just what i was looking for Dylan. Your style of video explanation worked quite well-too fast on some things for we beginners. Perhaps video should have completed at end of shelf building portion-it became a rambling too much caffeine sort of spiel that I couldn't watch fully. (put a frame around your map to make it really stand out-flat on wall doesn't give it the depth you hoped for) Many thanks for your efforts and hope to see your next video!

Would you still recommend these 45° angle supports if they are on top of the shelf instead of underneath? I ran into a problem where the shelf is supposed to go, I simply can't put anything underneath it because there's nothing there. (It's above a doorway.) So I made basically 2 "Right Triangles". I was having a huge amount of difficulty figuring out the the other 2 Angle Measurements after the 1st 45° Joint. If anyone else is doing this let me save you some time. When you were dealing with right triangles, when you add all of the measurements together, all three of the corners it will equal 180°. So I wound up with a 45°, a 70°, and a 25° joints. 45+70+25=180. It's simply impossible to do a 70° angle cut with a single bevel compound miter saw! So I gave up that idea, so here I am moving on... FYI I absolutely could have messed up the math, it may even be completely wrong! Ps... Since I do not have a countersink bit, what I would do is take a 3/16 drill bit to drill the first hole. I'm using exterior screws, which fit through that perfectly without grabbing the wood. Then I would use a 3/8 drill bit to create a sort of "DIY Countersink". [If you choose to do this, do not push on the drill! Let the drill bit do all of the work!!!]

Very unique approach. Seems almost as if he's never taken a wall apart and seen how it is framed. I don't really like how he connects everything. This is a very weak connection and should not be used for anything except very light weight objects. He's understating how weak this truly is ESPECIALLY if you don't use wood that is as strong as the wood he is using in his video. Don't dare try this out of plywood or a cheap wood. Simple modification and this would be so much stronger. Find a stud and connect to it under the shelf. Solved.
@DylansDIYWorkshop
@DylansDIYWorkshop Год назад
Have to agree that its a bit silly. the problem isnt in the shelves or the wood. Its not being screwed into studs. I dont know of any woods that are much weaker than the one I used. Basswood maybe balsa. But youre not likely to have that laying around
@pogojp
@pogojp Год назад
@@DylansDIYWorkshop Composite wood is much different than any type of solid wood. Most "Do it yourselfers" would use composite wood and this type of connection would break down over time. I would add a block of wood under the back of the shelf connected to a stud. Your side connection is weak and also very unappealing. Not only is a 1-inch block under the back a lot stronger, the block could also be used to attach all your little items under the shelf. In all fairness though, If your video helped even one person save money and do a shelf in their own home. That's a huge acomplishment and you have my respect for that. There is always room for improvement in my eyes. Especially in the wood working trade. Good luck in your endeavors. I'll subscribe so I can see the progress. Thanks for the reply.
