Today we make a DIY waterfall wier for a container garden or patio pond. Total cost was $17, but the actual materials used cost about $10. Pretty cool!

Like the waterfall you could add some filter floss or sponges to filter if you choose to do so. I also like the idea of another higher level of bog plants in the weir. It has alot more options if we allow our imagination to ponder different ways to use the weir. Stack several levels and add bog plants at each level and surround the weir with rock might be able to encourage most to grow up over and on the rock the more the levels the greater exposure for oxygen exchange but also the down side more opportunity for evaporation because of the increased exposure to air. But truly like this idea.

Very nice! If you replaced the elbow barbed fitting with a straight barbed fitting and drilled the hole in the front of the box (pointing the PVC elbow toward the back of the box) you could cut the needed tubing almost in half plus it would be nearly invisible and I think it might help support the box or maybe keep it in place. Could you do a larger trough? Maybe use one of those 3 or 4 ft window planters filled with substrate and planted with margin plants. Pump the water in one side and let it flow back from the far end. Not only would it be a wonderful planter but a helluva biological filter with all the substrate and plants. Thanks for another great video, Rachel!

seriously genius way to diy a waterfall. And the triple split of the waterfall itself, while probably not intentional, is probably better than a single stream.

Omg! Stop. You just read my mind. So I decided to put a mini pond together for the life of me I could not figure out the plumbing part of the project how to connect the pump to the tubing to the waterfall etc. thank you so much for the step by step instructions. You rock Rachel. Now for the trip to Home Depot 🤔.

I really appreciated your instructional video today about the spillway. I just got my house painted and have a black plastic box in my front flower bed. It's been there for years, ugly and unfinished, because I am such a procrastinator. A month ago I bought a black plastic box spillway from the local nursery, and still haven't set it up. I guess because I don't know how. It really helped me to see your video and see how easily you did it and I am ready to go outside and attack the project now. Looking forward to seeing more of your easy and fun activities. Thank You! 🌻💪

Nice idea. If you drill a hole on top side or back then you would not need to seal anything. and you can put some rock or gravel for bio filtration, just a suggestion. I love your channel.

Just pop that tube in the sink full of hot water, it'll loosen dried up and expand for you. I had the same problem with stiff tubing when I was setting up a little vessel water feature for my aunt. Couldn't get the tube over the pump outlet or through a hole. Hot water fixed both. ***You might put some really smooth pretty river rocks in your Weir. They will soften the edges and make it look sort of Zen and modern. Very cool! Your sweet flag could live in that weir, growing in pea gravel and filtering fish poop as it came through, by the way. It would look like a mini Iris or mini rushes, quite natural. Well done, my dear!

Simple and it works and looks good. If you move the inlet to the front all the tubing would be inside the pond and it would reduce the amount of tubing required.

That's a great simple and practical waterfall. Around here the box stores are great for those bins, for fittings, tubing, PVC Ace hardware is cheaper. Not sure about the fitting you used, but 1/2 inch PVC elbows are 59 cents each this varies at each Ace. If you didn't like the 3 way split might consider shaving the front edge straight.

Searching for info to convert a vacuum cleaner canister into my 250 gallon backyard pond filter, but found this vid! I diy everything than spend $. I accidentally left my syphon tube outdoors in the snow once, but holding the tubing under hot running tap made it easily pliable! Boxes are only $1 at the Dollar Tree :) Great help here.

I also agree that for anyone with 1 or 2 aquariums or a small pond outdoors, having some of these tubes ready and available for various projects is a good idea. As you said, maybe we only use 2 out of 10 feet and so we'd have 8 feet left over for some other project. Great idea on using that shelf. It totally looks like what some of the water fall weirs look like, that we might pay $20 or $50 for!

You could also have the tube fitting towards the front lip facing back. That way you could have the tubing going directly from the pump to your weir without it having to go over the edge of the pond. Black tubing would be less noticable and cut down on algae growth. Love your channel Ms. O'Leary!

You may need a hose clamp to hold the tube to the waterfall basin. If it comes loose all your water will get pumped out. Great idea. Also, can you put the pump outside your pond? Put a nipple in the bottom of the pond and run the tubing to the intake on your pump. This will get rid of the tubing being seen. I've always wanted to try that. Love your handy projects.

DIY cheap solution to bulkhead fitting are UNISEALS. They're amazing, been using them for years with my aquaponics system and turtle ponds; great, cheap way to plumb through walls. Including curved walls, like barrels and buckets, which most bulkheads can't mess with. Just wanted to throw that out there. Awesome video, gonna make a few of these for my tubs, thank you

Fantastic DYI idea. Thanks for the hint. Just a note, you will find soaking the Hosing in a Bucket of Hot/Boiling Water will soften it in seconds. I'd also add some filter media to the Container ie: volcanic rocks or whatever you have around. Cheers. Love this & Im going to try it for my Tub pond also ; )

The best sealant for outdoors is a polyurethane sealant. Silicone will become hard and brittle outside. You can by a small tube of poly glue in the glue section instead the big tube.

This is a great tutorial. I'm planning on setting up an enclosed 'raised planter bed' pond area for my turtle (in past years she's been put out in the 60 gallon pond tub, but, except for a rock that sits up above the water a bit, had no dry land, and it was not predator safe, so I couldn't leave her out at night,) and was looking at putting a waterfall in to provide filtration and decrease water changes, but it's $40 just for the waterfall box on amazon and then another 30+ for a filter media box to go in it, so I was looking for cheaper options. I'm going to see if I can manage to adapt this idea, perhaps by using a container with a higher lip and putting a smaller mesh-box or something holding the filter material against the hose fitting.

Looking at thumbnail: Please laugh...I mean this in the kindest possible way! I've said all kinds of lovely things to you throughout your videos, and so many of your projects are so lovely, but that waterfall has all the romance and charm of a paint roller tray! :-0 :-/ ;-) Watching video: OMG, it virtually IS a paint roller tray! Girl, you are a genius! What a lovely sound it makes, and your water lily will be much happier. They hate moving water and refuse to bloom if they are jostled too much.

Rachel another way to straighten the tubing is to let it set in a sink full of really hot water. It takes less than five minutes normally and keeps you from realizing how messy your hair looks. though I think your hair normally looks pretty awesome.

an idea for an even smaller version (that ive built but not used, so if anyone tries it lemme know how it goes!) is using one of those plastic scoops meant for dog food instead of the box 😊 i got mine for 99p and used spare tubing i had and drilled it thru the back underneath the handle (which im thinking will come in handy for securing it someplace - with zipties im hoping)
