Easy Fix for Missing Fonts

Hi Michael, I'm trying your excellent workaround to place a 8.75x11.25 PDF into Illustrator so I can edit it but when I place it into a blank document the size is 8.5x11. The PDF is a 8.5x11 tri-fold brochure with the bleed included making it 8.75x11.25. For some reason Illustrator is cutting out the bleed when I place it. Any thoughts on how to get Illustrator to keep the original size of 8.75x11.25?

Is there a way to download a font to my hard drive from my creative cloud account instead of activating it all the time. I chose fonts for my graphic memoir, but ID substitutes the font frequently and then back again to my original chosen font and in that process, it destroys my speech bubbles. Any suggestions?

Freakin' GREAT work around for editing the appearance of text without having the font! Never thought of doing it this way. Much better than tracking down a replacement font. You can also do File>Place if you don't want to leave your Illy window to drag and drop the file. PS -- Liked and sub'd.

This is the way I do this too. Of course the fonts are outlined so they’re not editable anymore, but at least you have the original text in the font. However, I found this trick works great with .AI and .PDF files, but for some reason it doesn’t work with .EPS. 🤔

"Linked artwork that interacts with transparency cannot be flattened. Embed the artwork (using the Links panel) before flattening." ~Edit~ Okay this one stumped me for a minute, but after some digging it finally made sense. If anyone else out there runs into this error trying to flatten a transparent .eps with missing fonts do this: 1. Creat a new .ai file 2. PLACE your .eps file and make your artboard is the same size as the placed file. 3. Make a new solid rectangle of any color that fills up the whole artboard and send it to the back. 4. Save as a .pdf with compatibility set to Acrobat 4 5. Create ANOTHER new .ai file 6. Drag or place the .pdf that you just made into the new .ai 7. Object > Flatten Transparency (✅ Convert all Text to Outlines) BAM! now it works.

only if you saved with PDF compatibility in the first place.

It still works ;D This behavior does not make any sense! Why can't we just open pdf with all missing fonts outlined.

It's a great tip but why people hit dislike!!

Not sure i get this; this is not missing font; it's you not having the fonts to use. The workaround is great if you have all the letters of the alphabet and have the time to type entire headlines or paragraphs one letter at a time. Easier to buy the font.
