Thank you! Local Mineke charged me $200 and couldn't diagnose the problem and then they wanted $950 for further diagnostics! I resolved the issue in 10 minutes after watching your video.

Good info. One thing to add. If there is no voltage reading, you may be able to isolate the issue further. You could put the voltmeter negative lead on the battery negative or chassis ground somewhere to see if there is voltage when the voltmeter positive lead is on pin 16. If there is, you would know that the issue would be the ground wire in the connector on pin 4. and not a fuse issue. Likewise, you could put the voltmeter positive lead on the battery positive and measure with the negative lead to pin 4, which would indicate the issue would be the wire in the connector pin 16, or the supplying fuse. Of course, there is a chance that both wires are bad!!

Had no power to the port and was pulling my hair out looking to find out why, saw this video, may share a fuse with other acc you say, like the cigar lighter you say, my cigar lighter doesnt work, checked the fuse and replaced the blown one, i now have power at the port to do my scan, 10/10 for this video man, thanks heaps 👍😎

2003 MDX - VSA reset the iterwebs tells you to jump pin 4 and 9, I did that and the jumper cable turned glowing red hot. I pulled it part, and after that the car wouldn't start and the OBDII code reader was dead too. I found your video, found the fuse that I just blew and fixed it up thanks to you. Any idea why my fuse blew, the other video has 100's of people commenting that procedure worked for them. Me, not so much. Thanks man, you're a lifesaver!

So glad I found this video before I went under the dash searching for a loose connection or broken wire! I just bought a $40 OBDII scan tool and the vehicle I needed it for showed NOTHING when I plugged in the brand new scanner. I verified the tools function on another car and it worked perfectly so I knew someone out there had the scoop on this likely common headscratcher. Thanks for saving my back and my time. It was the Cigar fuse under the hood that when replaced, energized the OBDII port and a simple fix!

Thanks for Video. I was able to pass my failed emissions test do to "no power" to the OBD connector. I also avoided having to pay 167 dollars for a diagnostic fee at the local shop. The problem was a blown 10a fuse in the "Room LP" slot. I never would have found it without your video.

Don't forget the common issue with aftermarket crap wired in and pulling power etc from the OBD2 port. Look for the wire nuts and tape.

And then what? Found the wire nuts and tape so do I just look for bad wires or unhook stuff? I have an aftermarket radio in my 2003 Tahoe and it's going through an OBD splitter at my OBD port. My truck keeps dying on me while I'm driving and I've already done a couple things already so nearing it down but I need codes and I can't get the OBD reader to connect.

Very informative video. As suggested in this tutorial, my make/model did NOT indicate either in the manual or thumbing through many websites which specific fuse powered the OBD. I then turned to A.I. (open AI) and asked it to find the information specifically for my make/model. It provided an informative answer. So, if all else fails, you may try that method to identify the blown fuse.

Yeb! That fix the problem. On a 2007 Ford Expedition, it shares a fuse with the Adjustable Pedals/Datalink. (Fuse #20) Thanks !!!!!!

I had an intermittent engine management issue. While trying to monitor live data with a scan tool, my scan tool would lose connection when the issue was present. It was fine when there was no issue. I did find corrosion in one of the connectors for the ECM, itself. Then I found out that the GM fuse boxes that are under the hood, are notorious for getting majorly corroded. That would make sense why the the OBD2 port would sometimes lose power and not blow a fuse. I'm about to remove it and take it apart and see. A new one is about $350.

Thanks Boss! I had this problem with my Kenworth Semi a couple of times and I get charged $140 per hour for someone to look at it. It was the fuse. The mechanics will say they swapped out the electrical, and just swap the fuse. 9 times out of 10. That's expensive!!

D&E, The one day old new battery negative connector melted leaving craters by the healthy still post and the starter was smoking, at the moment I stopped the car and lifted the hood, due to so much fumes coming out from under. Can I connect to the previous battery a portable power pack 12V Centech just to see if the OBDII scanner will bring some light in whatever happened or I would do much worse by doing that? I would jumper 12v to the + pin and check to see if the rest of the port is Ok before I start pulling wires. The odb port is part of the ecu so if it won't talk once your scan tool is powered up, you have bigger problems than " no power" . I've never seen a truly dead odb port, always connections...we have a saying in consumer electronics: "silicon doesn't fail, connectors and capacitors fail"

So can I straight wire that 12v from the battery and get power to the Ob2 , will it read then?

@@jemelmonger if you have 12v I side the ECU and no 5v, you must fix that problem first. Please post your voltage readings at your odb port.

@@jemelmongerI did that on my 96 dodge caravan, years ago. It worked, but I cut the wire feeding the port in case the feed was coming from the ECU, did not want to back feed the ECU. Just be sure you definitely know which terminal is the feed on your specific vehicle. I'm about to do it again on my 95 ranger, hence the reason why I'm on this thread. Good luck!

You could cut the wire behind the obd2 inlet and make an own fuse if you dont want to rip the car apart if the fuse is ok.

My 1998 Concord OBD is MIA. I checked every fuse in the car including 2 circuit breakers and they all check good. I suspect I have a bad BCU because my security system, door locks, radio, interior lights, and a couple of other things don't work and fuses check good. Would a bad BCU cause a no power condition the the OBD?

On my 2018 Chevy Colorado, state inspection stated they could not acquire a reading. But I took it to autozone and orileys both came up with a P0014 reading. Truck is running fine but any idea why state inspection could not acquire a reading?

i got a gwm steed 2011 model, my problem i got is the car starts perfect when cold. obd port is working. But when car get hot it shuts down then i also notice the reading on the dash board for millage does not come on but some lights on the dash work, not all the lights then when that happens we got no power at the obd port. Did you experience anything like that?

Hello.. I came back from California and had to put chains on 2008 Honda Civic for about 10 min. Well right before I took them off the speedometer stopped working and the check engine light, TPS light, abs light came on. The car runs fine with no issues but the It will not communicate with the obd plug in either.. can you tell me maybe what to do to get all these light off my dash and my speedometer to work again.. ty

I have a question? I have a similar issue, only I can't connect with my PCM just my TCM, skim module light is on and I have power and ground and with 5 volt reference. I'm guessing the PCM has failed? It's a 1999 jeep grand Cherokee wj 4.7

On the Cherokee it a built in tester just turn your key on until the instrument lights up on and off three times any codes will display in the odometer reading all clear it will say done

I've had a sudden crank no start situation w with codes leading to the purge valve and evap. I tested all that still nothing I went to test my fuses I had a blown ignition coil fuse replaced it it did seem like it wanted to turn over spray starter fluid still nothing so I noticed that my OBD2 Bluetooth adapter wasn't holding a connection it would connect but then it would disconnect so I took my Dash plastic off and it seems that the OBD2 port is very loose and I have to hold it in a certain position to get it to keep a connection any thoughts?

I have 05 Ram. Tell tale signs of broken wire. I've been all thru it intimately. The stealership couldn't find it. The Isp station has jumpered it out 2 yrs too Isp. Could it be ignition switch(??) No radio, key fob, interior lights only in aux, no power to #16 OBDII. Can I just hack in #16 wire w 10Amp in line?

Fixing a 2007 rav4 2.4 new battery and alternator the starter isn’t brand new but works so the car does nothing unless I put the diagnostic scanner in the OBDll and then the car cuts on but only if it’s in and runs rough but gives no code? Can you help me if you know

I have a 2000 Nissan Altima, at first the turn signals and Hazards quit working and when I bought the vehicle to check engine light has always been on so that really wasn't a concern at the moment but my signals were so the fuse was blown so we replaced it it worked for half hour then it blew again so I boyfriend checks the relay it smelling burnt we replace that and another fuse it work for about an hour then we decide will let's try the OBD and see what the check engine light means we plug it in no power to it do you know what this might be?

2003 Silverado 1500 5.3, fuse is good (replaced it anyways) checked pins and they are putting out ground and power. If a scanner is hooked up to it the scanner will turn on, but not connect to it and it won’t pull any information off of the vehicle (tried 3 different scanners just to make sure mine wasn’t defective.) Only ideas I have left is there’s some sort of communication issue but without being able to establish connection to retrieve any codes I am at a loss. Truck got a reduced engine power message and CEL came on and unable to see what the code is in order to try figuring out what’s causing the reduced power. Any input would be appreciated.

I have an 06 jetta I changed my battery. And now I don't have any power to my obd I can't turn my headlights on or off so my daytime running lights don't turn on. And every fuse. Is good I have been too many shops, including my own. And nobody can figure it out.

I have a 2008 Grand Cherokee Laredo and someone tried to bridge a pin in the obd plug and it arced and now I have no power to it I checked all the fuses and they are all good and I checked the wired and still no power to it

I wanted to ask I got a car from the dealer they have a tracker in the car which is fine but it is causing damage to my car computer because it is plugged directly into my OBD port and makes the readers not work. I don't want to disable it I just want to know if I can move it if that is possible

Wouldn't an open circuit on 4 and 5 cause it not to work since the grounds could be open.....just going to a chassis ground and not pin 4 and 5 doesn't check the ground side of ALDL, a loss of power or ground is still an open

Question: my port works, but only if it is push down when plugged in. I can plug in, nothing will happen, I apply a small pressure downwards, it works. Fuse is fine. Any ideas?

I have a 2003 Hummer H2. I am getting “Unknown driver “ message on the screen, where it usually says driver, one or driver 2 Half the electrical, such as radio, windows, gauges stopped working. I hooked my scan tool up as you are talking about, it has power, but it says no communication. Just asking because I have worked on this myself Probably 100 hours. do you think the problem is combined with the OBD unit which may be causing the unknown driver. Just asking for your opinion please ? I’ve worked on key fobs, changed ECM and BCM but I probably should have started with the OBD port at first. Any comments I would sure appreciate it.thank you !

I was trying to hook something up for a school project on my 2014 Dodge Durango, long story short the 12v and ground wires touched and there were some sparks, after that I couldn’t get a 12v reading and found that the cigarette lighter fuse was blown. I replaced it with another one that was for the horn just temporarily to see if that was really the issue but that didn’t seem to fix it, they were both yellow with the number 20 on them so I’m fairly confident they were the same type of fuse. Is it possible I did damage to something else like the wires when I short circuited or am I just not checking the correct fuses do you think? Any thoughts are appreciated we’ve got to get this project done in a couple weeks and would like to know if I can fix this or should just try someone else’s car until I get my obd port replaced, thanks!

Turns out it was actually just a different fuse, I started checking all of them , wonder how long my cigarette lighter had been blown 😆
